THE GOSPEL Luke 2:4-20

P: 4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city ofDavid, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 tobe registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. 6 So it was, that whilethey were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. 7 And she brought forthher firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

*O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by;Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light. The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

*For Christ is born of Mary and, gathered all above While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wond'ring love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King, and peace to all the earth!

P: 8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watchover their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and theglory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.

*Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled."Joyful, all ye nations, rise; join the triumph of the skies; With angelic hosts proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem!"Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King"'

6

*Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness!Light and life to all he brings, ris'n with healing in his wings.Mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die,Born to raise each child of earth, born to give us second birth.Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

P: 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings ofgreat joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of Davida Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babewrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angela multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 14“Glory to God in the highest,And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

*Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o'er the plain,And the mountains in reply, echoing their glad refrain:Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo!

P: 15 When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to oneanother, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which theLord has made known to us.” 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, andthe Babe lying in a manger. 17 Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known thesaying which was told them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who heard it marveledat those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these thingsand pondered them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praisingGod for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.

*O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell;Oh, come to us, abide with us, our Lord Immanuel!

By His incarnation, He became one with us. By His perfect and obedient life, He fulfilledYour holy will. By His innocent suffering and death upon the cross, He redeemed us. He madethere a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world andovercame the power of hell. By His rising from the grave, and His glorious ascension, He restoresus as Your children and opens heaven that we may commune with You eternally.

In His Holy Gospel, *Jesus instituted and commanded us to celebrate a perpetualremembrance of His precious death until He comes again. Thus invited by Your grace, we nowapproach Your table with repentant and joyful hearts.

EPICLESIS

P: O merciful Father, King of all creation, every good and perfect gift comes down from You,the Father of heavenly lights. Send down Your Holy Spirit upon Your gifts of bread and wine, and bless them and hallow them; that we might be led by *Jesus’ words of institution to proclaimthat in, with, and under the bread and wine that this bread is the precious Body of Our Lord andSavior *Jesus Christ, the Word made Flesh; and this cup is the precious Blood of our Lord andGod and Savior *Jesus Christ, the Word made Flesh, which was shed for the life of the world.

10

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

P: Our Lord *Jesus Christ, on the night He was betrayed, took bread; and when He had giventhanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is My @ body, which isgiven for you. This do in remembrance of me.”

In the same way also, He took the cup after supper and when He had given thanks, He gaveit to them, saying: “Drink from it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My @ blood which isshed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

PRAYER FOR COMMUNICANTSIn His word, God makes it clear that Holy Communion is to be shared by people of a common confession of faith;agreement in teaching and belief (1 Corinthians 11:26, 1 Corinthians 10:16). So without judging anyone’s hearts, or faith,we invite those who share in this confession by their membership in our congregation or one of our sister congregations, and who are properly prepared (1 Corinthians 11:27-29), to receive the Sacrament.

P: Earnestly desiring Your Fatherly goodness, to mercifully accept our offering of praise andthanksgiving: we most humbly implore You to grant that, by the merits and death of Your Son*Jesus Christ, and through faith in His blood, we and Your whole church may obtain remission ofour sins and all other benefits of His Passion.

We humbly implore You that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthilyreceive the most precious Body and Blood of Your Son *Jesus Christ, and be filled with Yourgrace and heavenly benediction, and being made one body with Him, may dwell in Him, even asHe dwells in us.

Strengthen us now through Christ’s body and blood, and preserve us in the true faith untilwe feast with Him and all His ransomed people in glory everlasting.

Through Him, with Him, in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor areYours, almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses,

CLOSING HYMN “Silent Night! Holy Night”

13

The lighting of candles is to symbolize the coming of the Christ as the Light of the world. The passing of the flame is to symbolize how we are to share the peace that Christ brings not onlyduring this Christmas season, but all through the year. The pastor carries the flame from theChrist candle, lighting the candles of the ushers. They, in turn, pass the light to the candles of thefirst worshiper in each row.

(Worshipers are cautioned to tip only unlit candles to receive flame from those candles already lit!)

WHEN ALL THE CANDLES HAVE BEEN LIT, The Pastor will say: As the light of these candles shine before us, may it symbolize the Light of theGospel which shines on us from the face of *Jesus Christ, the Word made Flesh, the Light of Life, andwho one day will shine on us directly from His throne on high in the Kingdom that needs no candles orsun.

1. Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright, Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy Infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.

2. Silent night! Holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight. Glories stream from heaven afar; Heav’nly hosts sing, Alleluia; Christ, the Savior, is born! Christ, the Savior, is born!

3. Silent night! Holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

4. Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht! Alles schläft; einsam wacht Nur das traute hoch heilige Paar. Holder Knab' im lockigten Haar, Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh! Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh!
