• Section Two• (Para. 3 ~ 6) The author cites the history of transportatio
n development as an example to illustrate the accelerating speed in technology and draws the conclusion that there is a sudden bursting of the limits, a fantastic spurt forward on our own times.

Group Discussion
• What trend is obvious to you in this table? And give an example.
• If the progress in transportation is divided into two stages(6000BC- 1880 and 1880-1960’s), what difference can you find between them?
• Why is technology advancing at a much greater speed now than before?
• The accelerative trend is obvious in this table. That is, it is clear from this table that the progress in transportation is getting quicker and quicker with the passage of time.
• In the first stage, the progress is very slow, while in the second stage, the advance is much, much quicker.
• Technological innovation consists of three stages: the creative idea; its practical application and its diffusion or spread through society. These 3 stages are linked together into a self- strengthening cycle. Technology is advancing much more quickly than before because now the time between each step in this cycle has been much shortened.
