Director’s NotesSooner or later, no matter how close family members are, they will have oc-
casion to drive each other crazy, especially, it seems, at holiday gatherings. Andwhen outsiders are in attendance, they are almost certain to get sucked intothe madness themselves, no matter how hard they try to keep their distance.Such is the plight of Tony and Vinny, two bumbling crooks, who stumble
into the Douglas household and take the family hostage during the annualChristmas Eve dinner party. The fun begins when it quickly becomes appar-ent that while the quirky, universally recognizable assortment of assembledrelatives tries to cope with their captors (as well as with each other), Tonyand Vinny are having as much, if not more, trouble coping with their bick-ering captives. The question soon becomes: who is holding whom hostage? But another question that comes to mind is the one that Mary Richards
asks her co-workers—and answers—in the final episode of The Mary TylerMoore Show, one of my all-time favorite sitcoms. “What is a family anyway? They’re just people who make you feel less alone and really loved. And that’swhat you’ve done for me. Thank you for being my family.”I truly believe that’s the sentiment author Steve Franco had in mind for
all the characters, in-laws and outlaws alike, when he wrote this deliciousroller-coaster ride of a play.My deepest, warmest thanks to producers Sylvia and Pat; the hard-work-
ing and exceptionally talented cast; stage manager extraordinaire Josh; andthe entire design and production crew. I love you all!And to you, our wonderful audience members, we say thank you—and
welcome to the family!Ria Parody Erlich
