As a service project for Confirma4on our confirmands: Carlie Boelk, Eva McCaw, Sam & Lupe Morales, and Jonah &

Elias Brehm; along with several of their mentors: Beth Foxen, Carol Gunn, Joe Klinebriel, and Lyle Vander Broek;

teachers: Linda Longfield & Kat Achtemeier; and volunteer: Suzanne Heber, served a delicious meal to 85-90 folks on

Thursday, March 31. For some of our mentors and confirmands this was their first experience serving for Café. We

are grateful for these volunteers, and especially for the many hands that supplied all the food that was served.

Please mark your calendars now for our next Café Ministry meal which will be served on Thursday, June 30th.

SERVICE OF PRAYER AND SOLIDARITY in response to the Cross-burning in Dubuque.

On Wednesday, April 13 Dubuque police say they found items that appeared to be burnt crosses at the intersec4on

of Washington & 22nd St.

In response to this act Rob Hoch, along with UDTS students, Kate Rupert, Julius Sheppard, and Maggie Lewis (all of

whom are part of the life and ministry of First Pres) organized a Service of Reconcilia4on and Solidarity on Sunday,

April 17th. The service drew around 200 people from throughout Dubuque and beyond (22 of whom were part of the

First Pres family of faith). As part of the service the par4cipants 4ed small strips of fabric together Sunday to show a

physical sign of unity in the wake of the incident. While crosses may have burned on Wednesday, the spirit of love

burned brighter and stronger as people sang, prayed, and fellowshipped together on Sunday.

Rob summed up Sunday’s witness with these remarks: “To see so many gathered, of so many different hues and ac-

cents, from so many places, young and old together -- it reminds us again that while the journey may be long it is far

from uncertain: ‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards jus4ce.’ MLK Jr.”

Confirma<on Sunday at FPC

The worship service on Sunday, April 24th began with the presenta4on

of the Confirma4on Class and their Mentors: Carlie Boelk (Beth Foxen),

Eva McCaw (Carol Gunn), Jonah Brehm (Lyle Vander Broek), Elias Brehm

(Steve Foxen), Sam Morales (Joe Klinebriel), and Lupe Morales (Franklin

Yartey). It was a day of celebra4on for a journey that began way back in

July 2015.

As a thank you to the congrega4on for all its support. The Confirma4on

Class created and assembled a Daily Prayer Book as a giR to their

church family. Ava McCaw provided the cover artwork.

Congrega<onal Life

FPC Talent Shines at Talent Night, from your reporter on the scene: Suzanne Heber.

The 2016 First Presbyterian Talent Show on Sunday, April 10 was a fabulous evening of music, magic,

words from the heart, and lots of laughs (and let's not forget the delectable feast star4ng us off)!

Imogen Hoch shared two lovely songs on her violin, followed by a poignant poem Joyce McClain

shared. Isaac and Miriam Clare Duff-Hansen wowed the audience with a rabbit in a hat and many

magical scarves, and Kat Achtemeier kept us in s4tches with BuGons and Greedy Dogs! Florence

SeiTer brought her friend Janina, who shared a Jamaican poem Florence had learned as a child;

Florence followed with a soulful a capella version of 'How Great Thou Art'. Gwendoline Hoch enter-

tained us with her amazing skills on the piano. Deb Leiter shared 3 light-hearted original poems, and

last but not least, Gabriel Hoch kept us in s4tches with his Puff the Magic Dragon solo. (All of this

was beau4fully held together by our wonderful MC: Suzanne Heber!) “Thank you!” Congrega4onal

Life Com, for puUng this together! What a great ending to a great weekend!

(for children age 4-entering 6th grade)

Last Saturday, kids from our FPY group (Ethan & Thomas Blair and Ella Jane Gunn) met The Sheppards at the Dubu-

que Rescue Mission to prepare lunch. Nicole had planned a menu to include lots and lots of chopping and mixing to

keep lots of hands busy. The kids were so efficient that they leR liGle for Nicole to do, and had lunch prepared well

ahead of schedule. We served about 70 por4ons of SpagheU and Meat Sauce, hand sliced and seasoned garlic

bread, ar4choke dip (made with several pounds of hand shredded cheese), a hand chopped Greek Salad, and

mashed BuGernut Squash. ARer cleaning up, we enjoyed the meal together. Thanks FPYers!

The Dubuque Rescue Mission houses about 30 homeless men, and provides them with a mul4tude of services to

help them regain their independence. The Mission also serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner to as many as 100 people

per meal. The meals are free and open to the public. Two thriR stores, a moving truck, and bike shop are operated

by current and former Mission residents.

“Supplies for the Second”

While serving at the Domestic Violence Center we learned how we can help by providing supplies that are always needed: toilet paper, paper towels, box-es of tissues, toilet bowl cleaner, cleaning products like Windex, laundry detergent, diapers.

This month’s major needs are paper and cleaning products and an assortment of

gree<ng cards. Please bring your “Supplies for the Second” to the church and place them under the table in the nar-thex the second Sunday of each month. Dawna Duff has volunteered to deliver them to the collection site at the Dubuque Community Y.
