ADA issues status report on root canal filling materials The ADA Councils on Dental Therapeutics and Dental Materials, In- struments, and Equipment recently prepared a status report on the safety and efficacy of the root canal filling material that is referred to as N2 or RC2B. In 1977, a formulation for parafor- maldehyde paste root canal filling material (powder [zinc oxide] 74.0%; bismuth salts, 17.0%; titanium dioxide, 2.0%; paraformaldehy'de, 6.5%; exci- pients, 0.5%; and liquid [eugenol]) was proposed so that controlled animal and clinical trials could be undertaken using a standardized material. Addi- tionally, protocols for investigation were created through the joint efforts of the ADA Council on Dental Thera- peutics, the Food and Drug Administra- tion (FDA), the AAE, and the American Endodontic Society. The protocols were to be used to help evaluate the standardized material in trials. According to the January 1987 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association, "A review of the dental literature and inquiry to the American Endodontic Society suggest that al- though clinical experience has con- tinued to be documented through a re- cording of case reports, well-controlled animal and clinical studies based on established protocols have not been completed. Until these studies are completed and sufficient scientific evidence is available to evaluate the material for safety and efficacy, the Councils on Dental Therapeutics and Dental Materials, Instruments, and Equipment will continue to maintain an impartial position. On receipt of rele- vant data, a joint council report of find- ings and recommendations will be published." In honor of Dr. Ger- stein, the Marquette Alumni and staff will gather for a reception during the 44th AAE Annual Session at the Hyatt Hotel on Friday, May 1 at 7 p.m .... congratulations to Dr. Ronald W. Anderson who was appointed Pro- gram Director for the Postgraduate Program in Endodontics at the School of Dentistry, Medical College of Georgia...On September 19-21, 1986, Dr. Dudley H, Glick gave a highly successful three-day course in Flounce, Italy, which more than 385 dentists attended. Dr. Salamat has been a member of the Dental faculty since 1955 and has been honored annually by the students of the College of Dentistry...Dr. Joachim Schulz-Bongert, the only Active member of AAE in Germany, was awarded the Second Order of Merit by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany because of his activities in organizing post graduate education for dentists in Ger- many...On October 9-10, 1986, Dr. Jerry F. Taintor spoke to the General Dentistry Residency Training Program at Fort Ord. Dr. Taintor's topic was "Endodontir Failures." 139 Dr. Joachim Schulz-Bongert In Memoriam Dr. Irwin A. Epstein was born on March 8, 1900 and passed away on November 30, 1986. A charter member of the AAE, he received his DDS de- gree from the College of Dentistry of the University of Minnesota in 1922 and completed graduate work in the Department of Endodontics at the University of Michigan. Dr. Epstein taught at the University of Minnesota from the mid-1920s through the mid-1940s and helped to found the AAE in 1943. A Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, Dr. Epstein held honorary fellowships in the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Throughout his lifetime, Dr. Epstein made numerous contributions to the dental profession and in 1983 he received the Outstanding Service Award of the St. Paul District Dental Society. He was involved in community and religious activities, was a flute player, a member of the Twin Cities Musicians Union, an avid fisherman and a golfer, painter and photographer. Dr. Epstein was active in his dental practice until the time of his death. Dr. Raymond P. Bassich, Jr. was born on January 27, 1922. In 1945, he received his dental degree from the Loyola University of the South and became a member of the AAE in 1966. Dr. J. Henry McGowen was born on July 31, 1906 and passed away on November 18, 1986. Dr. McGowen, a general practitioner who received his dental degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1928, joined the AAE in 1950. He became a Life member in 1974.

In Memoriam Dr. Irwin A. Epstein was born on March 8, 1900 and passed away on November 30, 1986. Study Clubs/ State Affiliate News

The Edward C. Penick Study Club held its first meeting of the 1986-87 year on October 2, 1986. The featured speaker was Dr. Samuel Seltzer, whose topic was "Facial and dental pain." The club's second meeting, held in November 1986, featured Dr. AI Reader, Chairman of the Endodontic Department at Ohio State University. Dr. Reader addressed "Local anes- thesia: What you learned in dental school was wrong."

The Illinois Association of En. dodontists elected the following new officers for 1987: Dr. Barry Nathanson, President; Dr. Darmon Kuntz, Vice- president; Dr. Robert Zelikow, Secre- tary, and Dr. Kevin King, Treasurer. Dr. Nathanson presented the outgoing President, Dr. Jerome Pisano, with a plaque to show the IAE's appreciation of his outstanding leadership.

The California State Association of Endodontists held its first meeting in San Francisco in August 1986. Speakers included Dr. Richard Schmidt on "Alternate delivery sys- tems"; Dr. Duane Kalar on "Causes of liability claims against endodontists and how to avoid them"; Dr. Michael A. Heuer on "The recertification of en- dodontics as a specialty" and "The relationship of the state associations to the AAE"; Dr. Richard Robinson on "Contracts - 101 questions to ask before signing," and Dr. John F. Field on the "Current state of dental in- surance and where it is headed."

The Ohio Association of Endodon- tists held its fall meeting on October 29, 1986 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Columbus. Dr. Michael Davis, the fea- tured speaker, addressed "The impact of the tax reform proposal and new tax legislation on the practitioner." The Spring meeting of the association will be held on May 13, 1987 at the Hyatt on Capitol Square. 1986-87 officers in- clude: Dr. AI Reader, President; Dr. Tom Russin, Vice-president, and Dr. Wi l l iam J. Meyers, Secretary- Treasurer.

The third meeting of the Louis I. Grossman Study Club was held Wed: nesday, January 14 in Philadelphia. Dr. Steve Cotton, Chairman of Operativ# Dentistry at Georgetown University, was the guest speaker. Dr. Cotton's topic was "An operative dentist looks at pulpal involvement."

In Memoriam (cont.) Dr. Steven Chartan passed away on December 8, 1986. He was a 1977 graduate of the Univesity of Penn- sylvania School of Dental Medicine and a graduate of the endodontic pro- gram at the University of Pennsylvania in 1979. Dr. Chartan was an instructor in endodontics at the Albert Einstein Medical Center, Northern Division, and was in the private practice of endodon- tics in Philadelphia. Dr. Morris M. Glasser was born on January 1, 1913 and passed away on October 19, 1986. He received his den- tal degree from Temple University in 1937 and became a member of the AAE in 1947. Dr. Glasser was a Diplo- mate of the American Board of En- dodontics and retired from practice in 1975.
