From The Camera Obscura you can see a fascinating panoramic view of Dumfries and the surrounding countryside.

Windmill tower and Camera Obscura are accessed via a spiral staircase - please phone 01387 253374 for further details. Camera Obscura viewings are not available when it is raining in order to preserve this rare historical instrument.

until January 2014: Dumfries Museum foyer exhibition 2013 : Who Dares Wins. An inspirational exhibition about Captain Cecil Riding MC, a local man who was parachuted behind enemy lines into Nazi-occupied France eight days after D-Day as part of Operation Gain.

friday 14 June, 7.00pm: The Great Moss exhibition launch at Dumfries Museum. Includes a short talk by Biodiversity Officer Peter Norman. Refreshments will be served.

saturday 15 June - sunday 18 august: The Great Moss. The internationally important Lochar mosses, one of the largest areas of raised bog in Europe, played an important role in the history of Dumfries and Galloway.

saturday 24 august - saturday 9 november: Tiger, Tiger. Pioneering the use of tripwires and camera traps, Frederick Walter Champion (1893 - 1970) produced some amazing photographs of Indian wildlife in the 1920s and 30s.

Learn about the animals and wildlife and plants that inhabit the bogs, and make lots of great things like candles and dyes.

Summer holiday drop in activities: Drop in sessions every day from 10am - 5pm throughout The Great Moss exhibition, make Animal masks, design, colour and cut out your own Iron Age torc, dress up as an Iron Age boy or girl.

Following on from last year’s grand success that was “Punkin the Jubilee,” The Stove are back again for Guid Nychburris - and this year we are taking to the Streets!

Come along and join in the fun as over the course of the day we will be creating a large scale pavement drawing - mapping the identity of Dumfries.

We’ll have stencils and spray chalk on hand so all ages can participate in drawing out Dumfries as you know it!

The RSAC Scottish Rally is a round of the British and Scottish Rally Championships. Following scrutineering at Dumfries Ice Bowl on Friday 28 June, the ceremonial start will take place from Dumfries High Street that evening. On Saturday 29 June, there will be competitive special stages in Ae, Heathhall and Clatteringshaws forests before the ceremonial finish back in Dumfries town centre. Spectators are welcome at the forest stages and can see the cars close up at the Ice Bowl on Friday afternoon.

ENVIRONMENTAL ARTS FESTIVAL SCOTLAND friday 30 august - Monday 2 september

This new festival aims to celebrate the region’s connections with the environment and explore its landscape identity. Events will take place throughout Dumfries and Galloway from June to August building up to the festival weekend.

The Environmental Arts Festival is a collaboration between Wide Open, Spring Fling and The Stove who will work with other cultural organisations as well as environmental organisations such as the Carbon Centre, The Solway Centre, Scottish Natural Heritage and Forestry Commission Scotland.

The festival’s themes will be energy and the land. Informed by these themes we will create new work and debate through cutting edge practice, temporary commissions, workshops and talks by experts in the field of art and environment. The Tour of Britain returns to Dumfries and Galloway for the 8th time in 9 years, on

Sunday 15 September.

For local fans, who are serious about following cycling, it promises to be another

day to remember.

A momentous Scottish stage of 207km will take the competing cyclists from Peebles,

through the Scottish Borders, Gretna, Annan and Dumfries, and finally to

Drumlanrig Castle.

There will be plenty of entertainment at Drumlanrig, and there is bound to be a

wonderful atmosphere with up to 8000 spectators expected.

You can ride the route too with the Tour Ride Scotland event on Saturday 14 September,

the day before the Tour of Britain
