Welcome to October In Oxford

What a month we’ve had! With all the preparations for our Restaurant Awards, it’s a wonderwe’ve had time to do anything else - well a few things have slipped through the cracks but weare human after all!

The Awards dominate this month’s edition with Mission Burrito, winner of the Express category, featuring as our lead article and front cover image. Mission have been a great supporter of themagazine for years and continue to go from strength to strength. They’re also the first restaurantto get to use our new Awards badges in their promotion - don’t they look smart?!There’s alsoan in-depth write up on the Awards on pages 6 and 7.

Preparations for 2012 are underway so if your favourite restaurant didn’t win anything this year- see full list of winners on page 7 (or, heaven forbid, even enter!) - then make sure they pull theirfinger out for next year.

There’s the usual listings, reviews and we’re working on some great new features for next monthto look forward to.

Have a wonderful October.

Well we did it! 248 days after the first meeting was held to look intothe possibility of staging the Awards, we pulled it off, not withoutthe extraordinary help of our friends at Malmaison and OxfordCastle, not to mention Miele, our brilliant Committee, wonderfulsuppliers and our fabulous sponsors. The In Oxford MagazineOxfordshire Restaurant Awards are, officially, here to stay!

We packed 270 guests into a huge marquee at Oxford Castle, in theExercise Yard behind Malmaison, and the end product was a stunningsea of red and black tables, which was just incredible.

Special mention to Zoe Naylor of Miele, Jean-Pierre Morilleau ofOxford Castle and the Malmaison ‘A’ Team of Mark McSorley, JohnRyan (who was co-ordinating the military operation of food leaving thekitchen) and Suzy Bramfitt (who held it together front of house). ChefRussell Heeley did an unbelievable job making sure we could enjoy aterrific meal and Suzanne Port was also an immense help with thepreparations.

Guests enjoyed a champagne reception in the A Wing of the formerprison, and they were joined by actors from The Oxford Actors Networkplaying the part of prisoners, together with their very own Prison Warden,Mr Mackay! The Orchestra of St John’s also played at the reception.

The Awards were hosted by Reya El-Salahi, a BBC radio and televisionbroadcaster, writer and journalist, originally from Oxford, and DonaldSloan, Head of the Oxford School of Hospitality Management at OxfordBrookes University. Donald is also the Chair of Oxford Gastronomica.

Trophies were hand-made using reclaimed or sustainable wood by IanSmith, artist in residence at Rycotewood Furniture Centre, Oxfordand Cherwell Valley College. SAE composed music specifically for theAwards.

(over 7,500 voteswere cast in total). Zoe Naylor, Financial Controller of Miele, presentedthe winners with their trophy. A full list of results is provided below.

Lead Article

Mission Burrito serves burritos, as well as other Mexican food, inspired from TheMission District of San Francisco and is based on two sites across Oxford in KingEdward Street and St Michael’s Street.

We ate at the King Edward Street branch, where the burritos are evidently popular. Therestaurant, which also does a roaring takeaway trade, is decked out with pictures andpaintings from The Mission District and is regularly packed out with hooked burritoeaters.

Burritos – tortilla wraps with flavoursome fillings - form the main offering from themenu, but customers can also eat Tacos, Fajita Burritos, Rice Boxes and Salad Boxes. However we were only here to sample the burrito. They say that variety is the spice oflife, and there’s certainly plenty of it at Mission Burrito. First of all, you have to choosewhat meat, beans, fillings and salads you would like. We chose to have rice and blackbeans, filled with Carnitas meat (slow roasted pork) but there is also the option to havevegetarian, steak or chicken. This was followed by the addition of sour cream, guacamoleand salad and the final decision of which salsa to try. We went for the chipotle which ishot, but there is something for everyone with the pico de gallo, which is mild, and thesalsa verde which is the medium and the habanero which is the hottest. In terms ofprice, the carnitas, chicken and vegetarian burritos are charged at £5.45 and the steakat £5.95 with extra charges for some of the fillings such as guacamole (£0.70), but notfor lettuce and sour cream.

The final outcome is a work of art in its simplest form prepared before your eyes. Thisstreet food style offering provides a fantastic meal, and the slow roasted pork wasabsolutely sublime. Coupled with this the other elements really come together toprovide a tasty combination that ticks the all the boxes for flavour.

We also had a side of tortillas chips with a mixed dip of guacamole and chipotle pricedat £2.45 which were an excellent accompaniment. To drink we had a mandarin flavoured‘Jarritos’ soft drink, an authentic Mexican offering, which washed the burrito downperfectly.

Francia and her team made sure we were educated about the different offerings on themenu, ensuring we had an authentic experience. Mission Burrito offers fresh food, prepared quickly that can be enjoyed in-house or as a takeaway, both equally assatisfying to the consumer.

To wrap things up, whether you are passing through and need a re-fuelling break, orwould like to try a modern twist on the sit down meal at a great price, you shoulddefinitely visit Mission Burrito.

Fully residential courses in the University areoffered in summer and, subject to status, arrangements can be made for visitingacademics to become members of the University libraries;

The Spice Lounge is based in the popular North Oxford suburb of Summertown, and offers diners contemporary Indian dishes with a focus on healthy eatingthrough a variety of ethnic recipes.

Right from the offset the contemporary theme is apparent with modern fittings and awelcoming atmosphere to anyone wishing to dine at the restaurant. Diners also havethe chance to eat al fresco on the terrace, but we chose to eat in the main restauranton a Sunday evening. Proof of the draw that this restaurant has was a packed diningroom and a busy service on a day that is usually meant to be the quietest of theweekend.

Once sat down we were offered poppadoms, priced at £1.95 per person, with our drinks. These were further testament to the contemporary theme and served not in the usualmanner, but in smaller bite-size portions. These were ideal for dipping with a choice ofdifferent sauces, including the classic mango chutney.

To test drive the menu, we first opted to try the Murg Pakora to start, which is piecesof barbecued Chicken Tikka covered with gram flour and spices, fried in oil, served hotwith salad and mint sauce. This was ideal finger food to pick at and enjoy whilst waitingfor the main course, and costs £4.95.

For main course diners have the choice from a wealth of riches. On offer are Clay OvenDishes, Khaane Khaas (specials), Fish, Biryanis, Unabashedly Indian choices and theVegetarian Selections. This variety of choice caters for those looking for the traditionalfare, but also offers a wide range of choices and specials such as Simm’s Keema Bhaharand Garlic Murg Tawa to tempt customers to try something new. All of the above comecompetitively priced with the majority of main dishes under £10.00.

We opted to try King Prawn Dupiaza (onions and tomatoes in a thick mild sauce) andChicken Dhansak (sweet and sour dish with lentils) with Khumbi Rice (mushroom fried)at £3.95 and Peshwari Naan (sweet flavoured) at £3.45, with a side dish of Saag Aloo(spinach and potatoes) priced at £4.25. The food was fantastic and encapsulates allthat Ali and his team are achieving – excellent Indian food in contemporarysurroundings. We also sampled one of Ali’s special Bailey’s cocktails, adding anothermodern twist to proceedings.

We finished the evening with a Toffee Bomb pudding which had lashings of toffee, chocolate and ice cream providing the perfect finish to a fantastic meal.

To conclude, The Spice Lounge is a must try for those seeking modern Indian cuisinefor excellent value in vibrant surroundings, or who simply just want an excellenttakeaway.
