“All of those people are pouring out their hearts and souls in perfect harmony, which is kind of an

emblem for what we need in this world, when so much of the world is at odds with itself…”

- John Rutter, Composer & Conductor[ ]

WELCOME TO OUR 39TH SEASON!For centuries, music has erased borders and crossed cultures to help unite people and nations in peace. In the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., “Peace represents a sweeter music, a cosmic melody, that is far superior to the discords of war.” Even in the 18th century, Beethoven wrote that “Music can change the world.”

During our 2016-2017 season, which also marks my tenth year as Artistic Director, we look forward to sharing our message of peace and celebration through thrilling performances by all our ensembles, and by our special guest artists, including the Nagata Shachu taiko drummers, Spanish guitarists, Stratford actor Geraint Wyn Davies, harpist Judy Loman and members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. We are also honoured to havebeen invited to perform in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with Opera Atelier, and in Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 and Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

In the season finale, our message will take flight as the Chamber Choir represents Canada at the 11th World Symposium on Choral Music, hosted by the International Federation for Choral Music in Barcelona, Spain in July 2017. The Symposium’s theme, The Colours of Peace, perfectly reflects our own, and we look forward to joining 23 other internationally recognized choirs to celebrate choral diversity and help build peace in the world. While in Spain, the Chamber Choir will also compete in the Festival Internacional de Musica de Cantonigròs in Catalonia, our first major international competition during my tenure.

We are thrilled to welcome you to our 39th season and look for-ward to sharing our spectacular repertoire In Peace and Celebration with you!

Sincerely,

Elise Bradley, Artistic Director

Geraint Wyn Davies Born in Swansea, Wales, Geraint Wyn Davies was a young lad when he, his brother Emyr and family moved to Canada.

While rooted in the folk drumming traditions of Japan, the ensemble’s principal aim is to rejuvenate this ancient art form by producing innovative music that seeks to create a new voice for the taiko. Taking its name from founder Kiyoshi Nagata and the Japanese word shachu meaning group, Nagata Shachu, has become renowned for its exacting, physically demanding and energetic performances. Nagata Shachu has the unique distinction of being the only group outside of Japan with the sponsorship of four major Japanese drum manufacturers, a testament to its mastery of the art form. For the last five years, Nagata Shachu has produced a three-concert season, featuring collaborations with both local and international artists.

Knight on the cult classic series Forever Knight, among other roles in TV. His film credits include Antony and Cleopatra, Hamlet, Some Things That Stay, Wild Dogs, American Psycho II, The Losers, One of the Hollywood Ten, Conspiracy of Fear, Nancy Drew, Post Mortem, Hidden Room and Hypercube.
