Meet Our KeynoterWilliam Kent Krueger Friday, 6 PM, Library

Raised in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, William Kent Krueger briefly attended Stanford University–before being kicked out for radical activities. After that, he logged

timber, worked construction, tried his hand at free-lance journalism, and eventually ended up researching child development at the University of Minnesota. He currently makes his living as a full-time author. He’s been married for over 38 years to a marvelous woman who is an attorney. He makes his home in St. Paul, a city he dearly loves.

Krueger writes a mystery series set in the north woods of Minnesota. His protagonist is Cork O’Connor, the former sheriff of Tamarack County and a man of mixed heritage—part Irish and part Ojibwe. His work has received a number of awards including the Minnesota Book Award, the Loft-McKnight Fiction Award, the Anthony Award, the Barry Award, and the Friends of American Writers Prize. The tenth book in his series, Vermilion Drift, released in 2010, was a New York Times bestseller. The next book, Northwest Angle, will be published in September. He does all his creative writing in a little St. Paul coffee shop whose identity he prefers to keep secret.

Stuart Stotts

Stuart Stotts is asongwriter, storyteller and author from Deforest, Wisconsin. He’s worked as a full-time performer since 1986, and he gives over 200 shows a year for kids, families and adults. He has released several award-winning recordings and written a number of books, including Curly Lambeau: Building the Green Bay Packers, Books in a Box: Lutie Stearns and the Traveling Libraries of Wisconsin, and his latest, We Shall Overcome: A Song That Changed the World. We Shall Overcome was named an American Library Association 2011 Notable Children’s Book.

The Poscas

Deborah Poscaand Zachary Posca of Genesee startedwriting Tales from the Kingdome: The Knight in Screeching Armor when Deborah was 15 and Zachary was 13. The book was published in December. The book started out as just something fun to do. Once they realized how much they enjoyed working together, they decided to take their talents to the next level and publish their novel. These two young authors are strong advocates of reading: “The more we read, the more we learn, and the more we learn, the more ideas we have.”

Markelle Grabo

New Berlin teen author Markelle Grabo took to reading at an early age, spending countless hours devouring book after book. In fifth grade, she decided that she wanted to be like the authors she favored. Two years ago, she looked back on an old idea for a story about a girl who didn’t know she was an elf and had to travel to a magical world in order to learn her destiny. She took those few pages of writing and reworked them, continuing thereafter until it became her first full-length manuscript. A year later, when she was satisfied with her work, she sent it to an editor. Journey into the Realm: The Elf Girl (the first in a six-book series) was recently published.

Festival Theme: One World, Many StoriesThe Southeast Wisconsin Festival of Books collaborates with Waukesha County’s Federated Library System(WCFLS). It seemed appropriate to celebrate the theme of the WCFLS Summer Program, because it communicates the diversity of the world through books. This theme, developed by the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) is being used throughout the country. CSLP is a grassroots consortium of states working together to provide high-quality summer reading program materials for children at the lowest cost possible for their public libraries.

The 2011 Southeast Wisconsin Festival of Books poster was designed as a gift to the Festival by Graphic Artist Christine Kowalski. It is on sale in the Book Sales area for $5.
