In Person: Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) JADL Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) Module OVERVIEW Although new to the 2011 collection wave, the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) Module expands upon questions first asked during the 1993 telephone interview, when participants were prompted to report on their experiences receiving personal care from a family member or friend. Originally asked within the Caregiving Module, which primarily focused on the participant’s experiences as a provider of care, questions about receiving care were moved to the Health Module for the 2004 collection wave before being reconstituted as the Activities of Daily Living Module in 2011. Far more detailed and expansive than what has been administered in previous waves, the 2011 rendition of questions construed "care" as requiring help with particular daily activities and allowed participants to name multiple helpers across two distinct activity categories. For the first of these, basic activities of daily living (BADLs), participants were allowed to report on up to three people who help them with the following self-care tasks: dressing; walking across a room; bathing or showering; eating; getting in or out of bed; and using the toilet. For the second category, instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), participants were allowed to report on up to five people who help them with higher-order tasks necessary to living independently: using a map to figure out how to get around in a strange place; preparing a hot meal; shopping for groceries; making phone calls; taking medications; doing housework or yardwork; and managing money. When addressing each activity of daily living, participants were asked whether they have any difficulty performing it due to a health or memory problem and, if so, whether anyone ever helps them with it; if a helper was mentioned, participants were also asked how long they have been receiving help. The following information was then recorded for each of the participant’s helpers: the person’s relationship to them; the number of days in the past month the person provided help, as well as the average hours of help provided per occurrence; and how far away the person lives. Data users should note that there was often overlap between the people named as helpers with BADLs and IADLs. JADL Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) Module

    OVERVIEW

Although new to the 2011 collection wave, the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)

Module expands upon questions first asked during the 1993 telephone interview,

when participants were prompted to report on their experiences receiving

personal care from a family member or friend. Originally asked within the

Caregiving Module, which primarily focused on the participant’s experiences as

a provider of care, questions about receiving care were moved to the Health

Module for the 2004 collection wave before being reconstituted as the

Activities of Daily Living Module in 2011. Far more detailed and expansive than

what has been administered in previous waves, the 2011 rendition of questions

construed "care" as requiring help with particular daily activities and allowed

participants to name multiple helpers across two distinct activity categories.

For the first of these, basic activities of daily living (BADLs), participants

were allowed to report on up to three people who help them with the following

    self-care tasks: dressing; walking across a room; bathing or showering; eating;

getting in or out of bed; and using the toilet. For the second category,

instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), participants were allowed to

report on up to five people who help them with higher-order tasks necessary to

living independently: using a map to figure out how to get around in a strange

place; preparing a hot meal; shopping for groceries; making phone calls; taking

medications; doing housework or yardwork; and managing money. When addressing

each activity of daily living, participants were asked whether they have any

difficulty performing it due to a health or memory problem and, if so, whether

anyone ever helps them with it; if a helper was mentioned, participants were

also asked how long they have been receiving help. The following information

was then recorded for each of the participant’s helpers: the person’s

relationship to them; the number of days in the past month the person provided

help, as well as the average hours of help provided per occurrence; and how far

away the person lives. Data users should note that there was often overlap

between the people named as helpers with BADLs and IADLs.

Note: For many cases a participant’s spouse or other family member was present during the interview. This sometimes resulted in the participant relying on the other person for help in answering some or manyof the questions. At the end of each module the interviewer indicated the amount of help the participantreceived and who provided that help. That assessment is covered by codes 1 through 5. Additionally, acode of 7 indicates that the entire interview was administered to a proxy while a code of 6 indicates thatthis particular module was answered by a proxy but other modules were answered by the participant.

Note: The referenced ADLs may include both BADLs (dressing, walking across a room, bathing orshowering, eating, getting in or out of bed, and/or using the toilet) and IADLs (preparing hot meals, shopping for groceries, making telephone calls, and/or taking medications), depending on which activitiesthe participant reported receiving help with. If the participant did not report receiving help with any ofthese BADLs or IADLs, this variable has been assigned a value of "-2". Note: Since reported helpers were allowed to overlap between BADLs and IADLs, this variable may havea value less than the total number of typified helpers named throughout the ADLs Module (seeHX601REA, HX602REA, HX603REA, HX604REA, HX605REA, HX606REA, HX607REA, andHX608REA). If the participant did not provide information on how a helper is related to them (indicatedthey did not know, refused to answer, or responded in a way that could not be coded into a relationshipcategory), that person was not counted as a unique helper; if the participant did not provide relationshipinformation for any of the people named as helpers, this variable has been assigned a value of "-4". Thereference to "entities" in the variable’s name stems from cases where participants decided to discuss (someof) their helpers as a group or entity (e.g. all of the employees who provide care at a nursing home) ratherthan on an individual basis.
