Start a New SeasonMuch has changed in the world since the start of last year’s Girl Scout Cookie Season. Yet together, we can help girls reach their goals whatever the circumstances—while building skills that last a lifetime.

To ensure the health and safety of not only our Girl Scouts, but also the business’s customers and staff we have added COVID-19 protocols. We will continue to monitor and evaluate the current health environment and may adjust these protocols throughout the program. You can find the most up-to-date information on the Health Updates GSDH page of our website.

In this toolkit you’ll find a variety of new tools, tips and resources to help you support girls during in-person and virtual events. You’ll find options for low- and no-contact participation as you guide girls along this pathway to success.

Volunteers—Tap into the eBudde AppTasks like scheduling booths and organizing Girl Scout Cookie™ pickups have evolved— and so has the eBudde App! Download the smartphone app now to find checklists, training videos and useful tips to help you manage this cookie season all from a single, easy-to-use dashboard! Learn more about the app at LittleBrownie.com.

HOW WILL YOU PARTICIPATE?We know this cookie season may look a bit different, but our commitment to you is to find innovative ways for Girl Scouts to participate, learn, and reach their goals while keeping them safe. We are working hard to develop unique ways for everyone to participate at their comfort level. See below for the high level options and then download the chart to create your personalized cookie experience and help determine how you and your Girl Scouts may want to participate. Promotions are a great way to increase sales. GSDH has provided these options for girls to promote at booths or anytime they are selling cookies:

5 FOR 5 PROMOTIONWhen customers buy 5 boxes of cookies, they can enter into an online drawing to win 5 cases (60 boxes)! GSDH will provide the cookies to the winners at no cost to troops participating. The 5 for 5 Promotion was designed to not only give customers a fun chance to win more cookies, but also help girls and troops increase their cookie sales.

As a special bonus, troops that sold to each of the five winners will receive a $25 GSDH Retail Gift Certificate.

Here’s how it works:

• Troops print the flyer and entry cards to promote the contest at cookie booths.

• Troops add their five digit troop number as the unique code on the business cards.

• When a customer purchases five or more boxes they are given a business card. A customer can enter the contest for every multiple of five boxes purchased.

• Customers then go online to gsdakotahorizons.org/5for5 to enter their contact information.

• Five winners will be announced on Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons Facebook page on Thursday, April 1, 2021.

• GSDH will provide cookies and facilitate pickup with the winners.

HEROES ON THE HORIZONHeroes on the Horizon is our council cookie donation program that encourages girls to ask customers to donate $5 for cookies to be donated to military organizations, first responders and other local heroes throughout GSDH. Encourage girls and your troop to think about who the heroes are in your local community and why they should be recognized.

Amp up your Heroes on the Horizon contributions by using this box wrap. Print it on 11x17 paper, cut it out, and wrap it around a Thin Mints box to spark conversation with customers about this great opportunity to give back to heroes in our communities. Printed copies will also be available in our Council Cookie Cupboards.

PRO TIP: Cookies donated through Heroes on the Horizon qualify towards the 5 for 5 Promotion.

In-Person BoothsSCHEDULING A BOOTHCouncil Scheduled booths are lined up by the council in popular locations. Find everything you need to know in the Just In Time: Cookie Booth Sign-Up with step-by-step instructions. Keep checking council booth availability as some troops may release their booths and/or more may be added throughout the program as we secure community partners.

PRO TIP: If your troop signs up for a council scheduled booth and cannot attend, be sure to cancel the time slot in eBudde to allow another troop to take your place.

Troop Scheduled booths are arranged by a troop with a local business (not already offered by council), a school or community event or drive-thru. These booths are entered into eBudde by the troop to get registered and approved by council prior to being held.

PRO TIP: Registering your booth is important because it ensures that you’re covered by our insurance, your booth is listed on our Cookie Finder to help customers find you AND no double booking.

BOOTH SUPPLIESq COOKIES!—See chart for SUGGESTED numbers

based on COUNCIL-WIDE averages. Please take into consideration your booth location, time slot, weather and other factors when planning the number of cookies for your booth.

BOOTH REQUIREMENTSFollow the guidelines below to ensure a successful and safe cookie booth. Cookie booths allow girls an opportunity to reach their goals and make a difference in their community! A Girl Scout Cookie Booth is not just a “booth,” it’s the troop’s storefront for their business. Follow the guidelines below to ensure a successful and safe cookie booth.

COVID-19 ADDITIONS• Girl Scouts requires all participants to wear cloth

face coverings during booths.

• Troops will encourage touchless payment methods to minimize cash handling.

• Troops will clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and are expected to wash/sanitize hands often.

• Girls are required to limit close contact with others and maintain proper distancing from customers.

• Girls must always be present; please no tag-a-longs.

• Girls should wear their uniform or Girl Scout gear.

• For council and troop booths, 1 adult in attendance must be an approved GSDH volunteer.

• Take along your booth confirmation from eBudde and ensure you arrive and leave on time.

• Be on time for your booth sale. Do not arrive early and expect to set up while the other troop is finishing their sales.

• Dress for the winter weather - but show off your Girl Scout uniform.

• Always use your manners – smile, say please and thank you.

• Do not block doorways or harass customers. This includes yelling and chants.

• Allow customers to come up to the table.

• Keep good inventory – count packages before and after to verify.

• Come prepared with cash - do not ask the business for change.

• Do not eat during booth time – not even cookies!

• Keep your booth area clean – pick up all empty boxes.

• Follow any guidelines set by the store – they are allowing us to be a part of their business.

• Don’t be a NO SHOW - customers find our booths through the Cookie Finder. If you cannot attend your time slot, please release it in eBudde.

• Heroes on the Horizon donations are the only donations to be accepted at the booth – no fundraising.

• Decorate your booth!

RECORD YOUR BOOTHGSDH uses reports from the Booth Recorder in eBudde to determine the success of our cookie booths and locations! This information can help us to determine if a booth location is successful, the best times to schedule a booth, number of cookies needed at a booth, etc. GSDH highly encourages troops to use the Booth Sale Recorder in the eBudde App!

To help you out, we’ve created this Just In Time: Recording Cookie Booths guide to walk you through the process.

Failure to abide by these guidelines could result in the cancellation of all future booths for a troop, or could cause the store to cancel future timeslots for all troops.

Magical MomentsWhat are Magical Moments? Magical Moments are created when Girl Scouts come up with creative (magical) ways to sell cookies during a pandemic! Get ready to share your ideas with us and you will receive a Unicorn Plush Dangler! Entry begins on February 19 and will run through March 23, 2021. Enter at gsdakotahorizons.org/CookieResources

DRIVE-THRU BOOTHSNow Girl Scout Cookie™ lovers don’t have to leave their cars to enjoy their favorite delights. When troops set up outdoor cookie booths in a parking lot (with permission from nearby businesses), Girl Scouts have a road map to success. Customers drive up—the cookies come out—happy cookie lovers drive off!

Girls can determine a socially distant way to run their drive-thru booth using order station boxes and technology available through the Digital Cookie® Mobile App.

Digital Cookie is a tool that can be used creatively for low-contact transactions. Credit card scanning in the mobile app allows girls to safely receive payments.

Based on the Girl Scout safety policies we have the following requirements and recommendations to ensure you operate socially safe drive-thru cookie booths.

REQUIREMENTS• All locations must be requested through eBudde. Enter “Drive Thru” in the Contact field.

• You must have permission from the location to use their lot, make sure it is a large enough space to be able to keep girls away from traffic.

• Everyone must wear masks.

• Roles for girls – creating and marketing signage to encourage customers, relaying information between stations, placing cookies in cars.

• Roles for adults – money handling & transactions, sanitizing baskets, supervising cookies to car transfers.

• Maintain 6’ social distancing. See attached layout for suggested traffic pattern.

RECOMMENDATIONS• Keep stock of cookies under table to limit contact.

• Encourage cashless transactions if possible (i.e. Digital Cookie/Square).

• Assign jobs for the entire day (i.e. one person is handling money, one is handling cookies).

• Clean all tables and chairs several times throughout the day.

• Have hand sanitizer available at every station for use between each customer transaction.

• Use posters to advertise price and goals that also encourage social distancing.

• Consider printing the Cookie Varieties flyer to show nutritional information without customers having to handle packages. Place in a plastic sleeve that can be wiped between transactions.

• Have bins or trays available for safe money transactions. Consider creative options – plastic shoe boxes, cookie sheet, Tupperware – something able to be easily cleaned between transactions.

SAFE SELLING PROCESS FOR DRIVE-THRU BOOTHSThe following safe selling strategy is based on Girl Scout safety policies and recommendations to ensure you operate socially safe drivethru cookie booths.

DRIVE-THRU BOOTH RESOURCESSigns to show the way—direct traffic with signs that say ‘go here’ and ‘stop there’ and ‘stay six feet apart’.

Simplify every step—menu boards to help customers quickly place their order.

Mask up and make it fashion—just because face masks are required doesn’t mean they can’t be fun! Girls can bring their creative vision to life with solid-color face masks of their choice, brightly colored fabric pens and a few ribbons.

Girl Scout Cookie™ ActivityFace Mask Decoration

Personalize your face masks to celebrate Girl Scout Cookie Season! Whether it’s at a drive- thru or pop-up cookie booth, you can show your love for Girl Scout Cookies with these add-on mask decorations. Use what you have and up-cycle.

Print shape templates on 8.5″x11″ printer paper or draw your own shapes. Cut out pieces and trace them on felt or fabric. Cut out and sew, rather than glue, them on your face mask.

1

Use non-toxic fabric markers to write your name or other message on your mask. Mask can be washed before use for added safety.

2

Tie ribbons, feathers and/or beaded string to the straps of your mask being sure they don’t weigh down the straps and compromise the effectiveness of the mask. Remember to think of safety first.

Lemon-Ups® Tart

What You Need:

1. Make the Crust: Preheat oven to 475°. Generously grease and flour 9” round cake pan. In a mixing bowl cut shortening into flour and salt until it resembles small peas. Sprinkle in water 1 tablespoon at a time, stirring until the pastry comes clean off the sides of the bowl. On lightly floured surface, roll dough out to a 12” circle. Put into cake pan, pressing dough into bottom and up two thirds the side of pan. With a fork, prick the bottom and sides of the dough. Bake 8-10 minutes or until light brown; cool completely and remove from pan.

2. Icing Layer:Add powdered sugar, egg whites and cream of tarter to a mixing bowl. Beat until thick and mixture holds a peak. This should take 7-10 minutes. Spread half of this icing evenly in bottom of cooled prepared crust. Cover remaining icing with plastic wrap to keep soft for later.

3. Prepare Lemon Filling:Prepare a simple double boiler: simmer a few inches of water in a saucepan or pot. Whisk together in a glass or metal mixing bowl sugar, eggs, butter, lemon zest and lemon juice. Gently place bowl over the simmering water whisking constantly until thickened, about 10 minutes. Strain out lemon zest. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

4. Layer and Decorate:Pour cooled lemon filling evenly over icing layer on prepared crust. Use remaining icing to attach Lemon-Ups® cookies to outside of tart and decorate. Reserve one cookie for the center. Refrigerate until set, about 2 hours.

Virtual BoothsVirtual booths—hosted on social media—give girls a way to achieve their sales goals and help others in their community from home. In fact, girls may find this allows them to discover new ways to take the lead in their cookie business and stay connected through virtual means. Here’s how it works:

STEP 1 Invite girls to brainstorm how they can help others with Girl Scout Cookies.

Girls will undoubtedly want to do their part, and there’s never been a better time for a donation program that enables customers to donate cookies. Would girls like to encourage customers to support first responders on the front lines? Or send cookie packages to surprise elderly neighbors or to someone in need? There are certainly many people who would be cheered by Girl Scout Cookies.

Need graphic support? GSDH will be sharing a Social Media Toolkit in early February on our website with a complete set of cookie images and social resources.

STEP 2 Create a social media event or schedule a livestream.

Invite girls (with proper supervision) to go live on Facebook or Instagram to reach large numbers of potential customers. You can also set up a Facebook Event.

Remember: Girls should review and apply the Digital Marketing Tips for Cookie Entrepreneurs and Families.

STEP 3 Make it personal and make it fun.

GraphicsCheck out all the Virtual Girl Scout Cookie Booth graphics available in our Social Medial toolkit (available February 1).

Girl BlingCustomers love to see personal touches from girls at booths, and the same is true online. Encourage girls to bling their virtual booth by providing you with custom artwork, photos and videos.

Digital CookieIf girls have Digital Cookie links to share, place them front and center. If any girl doesn’t have a Digital Cookie page, now is a great time to encourage her to sign up so she can take her sales and marketing efforts to the next level by going online.

STEP 4 Consider the logistics and include the details.

How will cookies be delivered? If you choose “girl delivery” option to customers, adult supervision is required to keep girls safe. Adults must accompany Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies and Juniors when they are delivering cookies. Adults might decide to leave cookies on customers’ doorsteps to avoid face-to-face interaction. In some cases, girls may need to promise customers the cookies will be delivered at a later date. Be certain to check and follow national and local health guidelines.

How will you handle payment?Consider using your Digital Cookie app for pre-payment.

STEP 5 Invite friends and family.

Encourage girls to mention their goals, what they are going to do with their troop funds and how they are helping their community.

STEP 6 Promote on social media and in your community.

As you know, go-getter Girl Scouts can and will bring out the good in any situation! Now more than ever, girls are spending time in virtual setting and engaging in social media, so an online experience comes naturally to them. Using all GSUSA safety guidelines, encourage them to go big with social sharing to drive customers to their Virtual Cookie Booth (their Digital Cookie site). They will love making a virtual pitch or creating videos to direct customers to their site.

#VirtualCookieBoothBe sure to use #VirtualCookieBooth in all your posts AND encourage your customers to share a photo with their Girl Scout Cookie packages using the same hashtag. You can even leave a note with their delivery!

STEP 7 Celebrate and share your success!

Let everyone in your social channels see how the girls are helping their community with their #VirtualCookieBooth. Together, we can build momentum nationwide!

Be sure to plan for celebrating and rewarding all those amazing girls.• Check your council’s website for patches the girls can earn.• Explore GirlScouts.org and LittleBrownie.com to find yummy cookie

recipes and creative ways to celebrate success.• Encourage girls to plan a celebration in-person or virtually.• Everyone will be looking forward to that party!
