A Message from the Vice-chancellorJoining the University this year, I was struck by the affection with which this institution is held by its students, its alumni and the community.

UWA graduates are rightly proud of their alma mater and many of them direct that pride to practical support, by involvement in alumni activities and in the form of donations and bequests.

It is very gratifying to know that our graduates have a sense of appreciation, a spirit of generosity that manifests itself in gifts, both small and large, that enable this University to go that bit further, to offer that much more to our students and researchers.

All at the University are appreciative of this philanthropic tradition and we thank each and every one of you from the companies and individuals who support the major contribution of a professorial Chair, to the young graduates who will make their first donation in memory of the good times and the great skills they took with them from UWA.

I hope you will enjoy the stories in this booklet. We have also included a list of the many donors who supported the Alumni Annual Fund. The Annual Fund has opened doors for students to follow in donors’ footsteps, to change their lives through education, with the potential to go out and change the world.

As we move towards our Centenary celebrations, I hope to meet and personally thank many of you. Your continued support is essential for our University to maintain international excellence in all we do so that we can improve the world that we live in.

A Message from the Director, Development and Alumni relationsTaking up the position of Director of Development and Alumni Relations, I felt as though I was ‘coming home’. I love Perth and I love UWA, as I know so many of you do. This is made clear from your incredibly generous gifts and bequests.

As a nation, we are very good at giving, helping others and volunteering. And it is that giving spirit that is going to see UWA achieve its goals in our second century. In the pages of this booklet, you will read stories, many different stories, about how individuals, companies and foundations have decided to support the work and mission of our University.

For example, at one level, one of Australia’s biggest companies – Shell Australia – is supporting UWA’s mining research with millions of dollars for a professorial Chair in Offshore Engineering. The collaboration will advance the understanding of liquid national gas processing and, at the same time, enable our academics to develop new technologies, protect the environment and teach our students new skills.

At another level your support for the Alumni Annual Fund has enabled the University to help many talented young West Australians to see a future for themselves at UWA and beyond, through the Fairway program to help less advantaged teenagers.

Also from your support, our iconic Octagon Theatre has a new stage and the historic Masonic Hall will be redeveloped into a multi-purpose arts centre.

I’m sure you will be interested to read about alumnus Tonianne Dwyer who relates why she is delighted to donate to the Annual Fund; scholarship recipients Emily Harding, Ashlee Bongers and Amy Hinchliffe who tell you in their own words how your donations have made it possible for them to continue their studies; and student callers Mitchell Cowling and Nirry Shah who reveal how talking to alumni during last year’s Annual Fund campaign opened up opportunities for them, as well as for other students via your donations.

We have so many people to thank: Rosemary and John Pearman and their family who have funded scholarships for medical students; the family of June Jones, which has established, through the Centenary Trust for Women, a scholarship for aspiring teachers; John Harriott, who in the rare position of a living bequestor, is setting about funding a Chair in Psychiatry.

These are just a few of the many stories from people, who believe in the power of education and have a special place for UWA in their hearts.

Philanthropy in 2011The importance of educational philanthropy and the difference it can make to a single student’s life in providing a much needed scholarship, or a dedicated researcher in providing vital support to help solve some of the major issues of the world is well understood here in WA. Thanks to the generosity of our alumni and the West Australian community 2011 has been the most successful fundraising year to date with over $22.6 million raised in support of the University’s student, academic and research programs.

As to be expected in Western Australia, a significant amount of support comes from the corporate sector and UWA greatly appreciates this opportunity to partner with industry leaders across a range of areas. Just as important though is the strong support we receive from our alumni with over 23 per cent of funds raised in 2011 coming from our own UWA graduates. This culture of individual giving from those who have an affiliation with UWA is borne out by the amount of funds also raised through staff, past and present as well as friends and supporters of the University.

The wide ranging and life changing research carried out by our world class researchers here at UWA continues to attract support from our industry partners, philanthropic foundations and individual donors with nearly 37 per cent of funds raised in 2011 going to support academic and research staff and their various projects.

The other major area of philanthropic support is in ensuring our current students have access to a quality education. In 2011, 37 per cent of funds raised have been directed towards supporting the leaders of the future through student programs, scholarships (both merit and access based) as well as rewarding their achievement through prizes across all faculties.

Finally, another significant area of support for the University is through our alumni and supporters remembering UWA in their wills. In 2011 nearly $3 million was raised through bequests – with over half of this amount going to establish a range of scholarships such as the CTW Elizabeth Sarfaty scholarships, the Emeritus Professor John Jackson scholarships and the Henry Schapper postgraduate scholarships.

UWA was founded on philanthropy and through the ongoing support of its alumni and the West Australian community it continues this proud history which benefits not only this state but contributes to UWA’s international excellence inacademic pursuit.

At the age of 39, John Pearman’s life changed. It was a scholarship from UWA that made the difference.

“We were able to find a house to rent in London that cost us exactly what we were getting from renting out our home in Perth,” Mrs Pearman said. “We had to be careful with our money, and treats were few and far between. But the children loved their time in London and in Europe.”

“I’ve never worked so hard in my life,” Dr Pearman laughed. “It was very intensive coursework, with a short thesis and two weeks of written and practical examinations at the end. But it was marvellous. I learned so much and it opened my eyes to so many things.”

The Masters paved the way for Dr Pearman to be accepted into the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia when he returned to Perth at the end of 1979.

He brought fresh ideas to RPH’s microbiology department. Later, he was appointed Director of Microbiology at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children (1984 – 1990) then returned to RPH as Head of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (1990 – 2003), retiring in 2004.

Along the way, Dr Pearman’s research concentrated on the control of antibiotic-resistant organisms in hospitals. He is proud that his work, and that of his colleagues, has ensured WA is one of the few places in the world where antibiotic-resistant organisms (what the public knows as staph infections) have been successfully prevented from becoming established in hospitals.

“For 20 years I referred to my notes from London, which I kept on two shelves on the left hand side of my office, always within reach. They were

the backbone of my career, along with the valuable international network I developed.”

“When the Dean of Medicine, Professor Ian Puddey, said a few years ago, that he would like to see more medical students doing the Bachelor of Medicine Science, I knew this was the perfect opportunity for me to give back to the University, to return the favour that had so enriched my life and my career,” he said.

“I discussed my idea with Rosemary and the children because a substantial donation would affect their inheritance, and they didn’t hesitate. I was so proud of Fiona and Tim, both of whom are UWA graduates. “Of course Dad! No holding back,” they said.

Dr and Mrs Pearman meet each scholarship holder when they present their work towards the end of the course. He hopes their sponsorship and interest in the students will, in a small way, recreate the support and interest that Foundation Professor of Microbiology, Neville Stanley, showed the young Dr Pearman. “Neville Stanley loved young people and was a wonderful mentor and friend.”

He said the idea of giving back after benefiting from a scholarship was a natural choice for his family.

“It is especially important for people to take a philanthropic role in this economic climate, where an aging population means that progressively less government funding will be available for universities.”

A scholarship can change a lifeAt the age of 39, John Pearman’s life changed. It was a scholarship from UWA that made the difference.

Now, 35 years later, the retired doctor’s startlingly blue eyes still blaze with enthusiasm as he recounts how 18 months’ immersion in ‘rigorous science’ in London set him up for a distinguished career in medical microbiology. And his fervent belief that medical students should study more science became the obvious avenue for Professor Pearman and his family to repay the University for that life-changing scholarship.

The John and Rosemary Pearman Scholarship has already funded three students from UWA’s Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences to add a Bachelor of Medical Science to their medical degree.

John Pearman was a junior consultant in microbiology at Royal Perth Hospital in 1977 when his head of department, Associate Professor Stewart Goodwin, recommended the University of London’s Master of Science degree in Medical Microbiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith.

He applied for and won a Sobotka Scholarship from UWA. These scholarships were named after a Hungarian migrant who left a generous bequest to the University to allow medical graduates to study overseas.

“The scholarship paid for the course, for return air fares to London for me, my wife Rosemary and our two children, and a small living allowance.”


Along with the deployment of what we hope will be the world’s first Floating Lng facility off the coast of WA, Shell believes this professorial chair will help reinforce West Australia’s position at the forefront of Lng technology.

Both UWA’s Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS) and Oceans Institute are globally renowned for their research in these areas. By establishing a Chair in Offshore Engineering at UWA, Shell are safe in the knowledge that they are working with a research partner who understands their needs and will produce practical solutions to the problems faced.

Shell is one of the first companies in the world to commit to Floating LNG. It is a groundbreaking innovation that will allow the company to bring stranded energy sources successfully to market. FLNG can be used as a means of developing resources that otherwise wouldn’t be developed through a traditional onshore LNG plant.

The technology can also provide a low-footprint alternative for gas developments where undersea pipelines and ports would exact too high a toll on the marine or coastal environment.

Shell has been a leader in LNG technology for decades. Many of the technologies used on the FLNG facility have been used successfully onshore, but others have been extended or modified for the processes to be done at sea and in a confined area.

The impact of this collaboration extends beyond Shell and UWA. By initiating this partnership Shell are also keen to work with UWA to position Perth and WA at the forefront of offshore engineering research and expertise.

Ann Pickard, Shell Australia Country Chair and board member of UWA’s Energy & Minerals Institute is delighted that Shell and UWA are collaborating.

“We see this as an important opportunity to contribute to research that will benefit the whole offshore industry, and better equip West Australia to fulfil its potential as a global energy hub,” she said.

“Along with the deployment of what we hope will be the world’s first Floating LNG facility off the coast of WA, Shell believes this professorial chair will help reinforce West Australia’s position at the forefront of LNG technology.”

Shell AustraliaWater that is deeper than most people can imagine, huge swells and frequent cyclones over the summer.

These sound like insurmountable difficulties, but together, UWA and Shell Australia are going to overcome these problems to help Shell secure the world’s first Floating Liquefied Natural Gas facility far off our north-west coast.

Shell Australia and the University have signed a multi-million dollar agreement to work together for five years on this, the biggest challenge for the offshore industry in many years.

Shell’s Prelude Floating LNG Project will provide significant investment and benefits to West Australia. Reinforcing Shell’s strong commitment to education, establishing a Professorial Chair in Offshore Engineering at UWA was one of the first partnerships announced after Shell took final investment decision on the project. The partnership includes the funding of postdoctoral fellows and PhD students in meteorology and oceanography engineering.

Shell engineers want to increase their understanding of how metocean conditions can impact offshore oil and gas operations.

Each year we encourage our current students to be part of the University’s mission to engage with our alumni and seek donations to make a difference to the everyday lives of our students. Through the Annual Fund telephone campaigns UWA students work as callers to make contact with our alumni across the world – updating contact details, keeping

them informed as to what is happening here on campus and sharing graduates’ experiences of their times at UWA.

In seeking philanthropic support for the University, the Annual Fund concentrates on core areas that can really make a difference – alumni funded scholarships, areas of greatest need.

In 2011 we focused one of our campaigns on building support for the University’s Fairway program which provides significant support to Year 12 students facing financial hardship or other difficult circumstances to help them achieve their true academic potential.

In 2011 with the generous support of 1208 alumni, we raised nearly $390,000 with the majority of these funds going to support student scholarships. A number of our alumni also had their gifts matched through their employers’ matched giving programs so we’d like to acknowledge Apache Energy, BHP Billiton,

Ernst & Young and the Macquarie Group Foundation for their commitment to encouraging a culture of giving.

As always we are overwhelmed by our alumni support for and interest in UWA.

Annual Fund – Student caller Aisha Novakovich

It’s about finding a connection with our alumni, and sharing the stories of how their generous donations have ensured that many deserving students have equitable access to education. You’ll go away feeling uplifted, with a greater sense of pride in what UWA has to offer.

Annual Fund – Student caller nirry Nirry Shah, doing a double degree in Economics and Commerce, was one of the most enthusiastic Annual Fund student callers from the past two years.

“The biggest single donation I secured was $7,000”, she said. “And I raised $45,000 for UniGym. It’s a program for kids with disabilities within the School of Sport Science, Exercise and Health. Lots of people I called liked the idea of helping them”.

Nirry said she felt she had gained as much from her student caller role as the University had gained from the Annual Fund campaign.

“We are usually given a list of people to call who have graduated from courses similar to the one we’re doing. So it was great to talk to people who were once in the same boat, not knowing where they’re going and wondering about the future”.

“I was offered quite a few jobs and vacation work, but mainly I made a lot of really useful contacts which will be helpful as I head towards finishing my degree and looking for a job”.

“The role of caller teaches you confidence and professionalism in dealing with people. And I have been inspired to keep going and study hard by their success stories”.

“I benefitted from the work, as well as doing something good for the University,” she said.

Annual Fund – Student caller Mitchell As Mitchell Cowling successfully touted the benefits of donating to UWA in his role as a student caller for the Annual Fund he also succeeded in earning himself a job.

“I like talking to people and I found it an easy job,” said Mitchell, whose easy friendly telephone manner obviously apealed to the graduates he called.

Mitchell’s from a farming background and one night he got talking to a man about agriculture. “He ran a company which bought-up unprofitable farm land then subcontracted people to plant trees on the land for carbon offsets”.

“He was in his car as I was talking to him, so he wrote my number with a permanent marker on his windscreen. A month later, he rang to offer me a job. When he came to pick me up to take me to Mullewa to start work, my number was still on his windscreen!”

“Probably the most interesting was a lovely woman in her 80s, who went to uni in the 1930s when she was 16. She had an excellent memory and told me some great stories about those days”.

“She was still involved in UWA, through the Centenary Trust for Women, so was already donating, but made a further donation.”

“I found it so interesting talking to lots of different people. I’m hoping to do it again this year”.

Alumni Annual Fund DonorI graduated from UWA with a law degree in 1985 and headed to the UK shortly after to pursue a career in investment banking in London.

I was always aware of having had an excellent education at UWA, but I quickly lost touch with the University as I immersed myself in my career and enjoyed all that London had to offer.

After working on some fascinating transactions over the years I decided it was time for a change and moved into the world of property – setting up and running a £1.25bn fund management business that owned and operated Student Housing and Science Parks in partnerships with local universities.

I returned to Australia in 2010 and now live in Brisbane where I am building a career as a Non-Executive Director.

Through my work with the university sector in the UK, I am very aware that our University now competes on a global stage in a way that it didn’t when I was a student. UWA is a globally relevant institution playing a key part in the development of Australia’s knowledge economy – a key to the prosperity of future generations of West Australians.

I decided to give to the Unrestricted Fund through the Annual Fund as it gives the University the maximum flexibility to direct funding to where it is required to assist in improving the fabric of the University.

In time, I hope to be able to increase my support, particularly around science and research and development, which has become a personal passion. But for now, I am very pleased and proud to know that my contribution is making a difference and that I am giving something back to an organisation that provided me with the opportunity for an exciting international career.

But it was while I was still in London that I reconnected again with UWA, thanks to the work of David McKinlay and the UWA Alumni Association. They provided the first point of re-engagement for me and I greatly enjoyed the opportunities of meeting and sharing experiences and knowledge with the rich tapestry of UWA graduates in London.

The tipping point for me, when I decided that I would become a donor, was a dinner I was invited to attend in London a few years ago as part of the launch of the University’s Science Futures Program, which showcased the scientific and medical talent amongst the UWA Alumni.

I was bowled over to learn that UWA had produced so many internationally pre-eminent scientists, but more important was the realisation of their impact on the world – that the world was demonstrably a far better place today for their work.

It reinforced to me what an important role universities play in the improvement of our world and, with that, the decision to find a way to give back evolved.



OschOver the past year more than 40 deserving students have been able to start or continue their university studies thanks to the generosity of the UWA Alumni.

The Annual Fund provided more than $135,000 towards scholarships for undergraduate and Honours students, for students from rural and regional areas, as well as the metropolitan area. Three of the five categories of scholarships were awarded for the first time in 2011.

Feedback from the students confirms that theyare thrilled by the support. In some cases, students had reached the stage of considering abandoning or postponing their studies because of financial difficulties. They have promised that they too will return the favour and, as alumni, will donate to scholarships to help future students who find themselves in similar situations.

Most Annual Fund scholarship donors still vividly remember their student days and know how much their gifts will be appreciated by the current students.

Even the smallest donations, when added together, have a big impact.

O larshipsHackett Foundation Alumni Honours Scholarship – in 2011, eight honours students, who demonstrated academic excellence, were chosen to recieve this scholarship worth up to $6,000.

UWA Alumni Awards of Distinction – for the first time in 2011, five commencing undergraduate students were awarded the new $5,000 scholarships. The students had to demonstrate high levels of achievement across all their final school exams and in some other aspect of their lives, such as sport, culture, community development or leadership.

UWA Alumni Equity and Merit Scholarship – another five new equity and merit scholarships were also awarded for the first time last year. They went to students who demonstrated financial need, coupled with good academic results. These awards were for $4,410 each, in line with the Commonwealth Scholarships indexation.

UWA Alumni Swans Scholarships and the new UWA Alumni Swans Rural Scholarships – were awarded to 23 students providing up to $2,254 a year for up to four years. To qualify, the students must be in receipt of a Centrelink payment or able to demonstrate financial hardship. The rural scholarships were new in 2011 and will increase to $4,772 a year to bring these in line with other rural awards.


It is motivating to know that the scholarship has been provided by UWA alumni and I hope that one day I too will be able to give back to the program so that more students like me can continue to receive financial relief during their university studies.

My time in Tanzania has been invaluable to me both as a person and a doctor. I hope to return to work there once my studies are completed. I would like to thank all the donors to the Annual Fund who have made this possible for me.

Scholarship recipient Ashlee BongersI am studying for a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Commerce with majors in Financial Accounting, Corporate Finance and Applied Mathematics.

Having moved from Cowaramup to Perth in order to attend UWA, the UWA Alumni Swans Rural Scholarship assisted me greatly in covering my costs of living away from home. It allowed me to focus more on my studies rather than worrying about money and spending valuable study time working even longer hours to support myself.

This scholarship has enabled me to achieve my best, because it significantly reduces financial stress.

Coming from rural Western Australia I am very grateful for all the opportunities available to me at UWA and I thank the UWA alumni for their generosity in funding this scholarship, and I feel very honoured to be a recipient.

Ashlee Bongers Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of commerce

Scholarship recipient emily Harding For three years I have been a recipient of the UWA Swans Alumni Scholarship. It has enabled me to buy medical textbooks and helped me to focus more time on my studies than on earning money.

The scholarship also indirectly helped hundreds of poor people in Tanzania, where I worked last summer.

I put the scholarship money from last year towards flights for my overseas medical elective in rural Tanzania where I spent two months working at Selian Lutheran Hospital and for the Flying Medical Service of Tanzania.

Selian Lutheran Hospital is a government-run hospital in Arusha, in the north of the country. It treats thousands of patients for a variety of conditions. A large proportion of the patients, both adults and children, are HIV positive and, as such, suffer from other infections such as tuberculosis, meningitis and pneumonia.

Through the Flying Medical Service I attended remote medical clinics where we provided care to people of the Masai tribe in very remote locations in Tanzania, often only accessible by air. In three days we examined and treated 140 pregnant women, vaccinated 400 children against deadly diseases common to their area and treated numerous other patients for chronic and short-term conditions.

This year the scholarship money will again assist me to focus my time on my studies as well as coordinating the UWA charity Red Party, which raises money and awareness for HIV/AIDS.

Scholarship recipient Amy HinchliffeAt the beginning of my engineering degree at UWA I struggled to find a lifestyle that balanced my university studies, part-time work and demands of living away from home.

In my first year I was averaging more than 25 contact hours at university a week and working a part-time job all weekend and occasionally Friday nights. And then there was additional study time required outside of lecture hours. Being so busy, I felt like I was missing out on the student experience that university should be all about. Not only this, but my grades suffered from the extra pressure.

In second year I became eligible to receive Youth Allowance from Centrelink which then allowed me to qualify for and to be awarded the Alumni Swans Scholarship.

The UWA Alumni Swans Scholarship has helped to relieve my financial pressures at University. It has allowed me more free time to study and be involved in extracurricular activities around the University. With more time to focus on my academic work, my grades increased to a standard with which I was more than happy.

It is motivating to know that the scholarship has been provided by UWA alumni and I hope that one day I too will be able to give back to the program so that more students like me can continue to receive financial relief during their university studies.

Fairway UWA All over the State there are Year 12 students who are feeling confident about their future, thanks to the generosity of the UWA Alumni who are contributing to a major new UWA initiative.

The University established the Fairway UWA program in 2011, a support program for students during their final year of secondary school. It provides disadvantaged students with an opportunity to build upon their abilities, improve their academic skills, and develop their true potential.

This year there are 45 disadvantaged students from metropolitan and regional WA powering their way through Year 12, fuelled by the Fairway UWA program.

If they successfully complete the Fairway journey, the destination will be entry to any of the University’s undergraduate three-year degree courses.

“At the end of the camp, we gave them all a $200 voucher for Office Works because we knew that some of them had to work after school just to buy stationery. It’s been great hearing back from the students how they are using the voucher and how much they appreciate it”.

“One set of twins (there are three sets in the program) put their vouchers together and bought a study desk and a small printer,” she said.

The students continue the program throughout the year, with online learning exercises to increase their skills in critical thinking, research and note-taking, to help them with their school work, as well as building skills for tertiary education.

“We are investigating ways that we can provide further support for the students, many of whom face a unique set of challenges,” said Dr Umneea Khan, project officer for UWA Aspire, who is working with Dr Nicol.

The primary criterion for entry to the Fairway program is financial hardship. Dr Adam Nicol, Fairway Project Officer, said that students were also eligible if they had an unsupportive study environment, excessive family responsibilities, a disrupted migrant or refugee passage to Australia, severely disrupted schooling due to relocation and other disadvantages.

“All students who were eligible were accepted into the program, which started with a three-day residential camp at St Georges College in January. The students had a great time. I think they really appreciated meeting and making friends with other students who, like them, face considerable obstacles in reaching University”, Dr Nicol said.

In the UWA Annual Fund direct mail in December 2011, for the first time alumni were given the option of donating to a specific program – Fairway UWA. And they jumped at the opportunity.

The Annual Fund raised $35,319 to help disadvantaged students get to University – the most that has ever been raised by a direct mail campaign.

Dr Judy Skene, Associate Director, Student Services (Student Support Services) said the donations meant the students could be offered more support.



Octagon Theatre Many UWA graduates would have fond memories of the University’s Octagon Theatre. It is the biggest lecture theatre on campus and most students would spend some time there during undergraduate days.

It is also UWA’s most popular performing arts venue attracting approximately 80,000 people each year to attend public lectures, theatre, dance, opera, and classical and popular music concerts.

After more than 15 years, the Octagon’s plywood thrust stage was not only looking shabby but the structure of stage sections was beginning to fail.

It was going to cost more than $60,000 to repair and restore the stage and University Theatres asked the Development and Alumni Relations Office if they could help.

The graduates’ generous gift from the UWA Alumni Annual Fund enabled the University to replace the old stage with a new sprung jarrah stage with strong but lightweight aluminium stage bases.

Now the stage looks fantastic. It feels good, especially for dancers for whom a sprung stage is essential, the sections of the stage can be easily removed to allow for more seating; the shape of the stage can be altered to suit the production and even to reveal an orchestral pit.

Next time you visit the Octagon, you can be proud of what you and your fellow graduates have done to improve a University icon and extend its life and functions.

Masonic Hall The lovely art deco Nedlands Park Masonic Hall in Broadway has been a landmark for UWA students since the 1930s.

Thanks to the generous support from Alumni donations, this building will now become a thriving complex for performance, music groups and artists from a wide spectrum of disciplines. With such an accessible location, the complex will become an important window into University’s creative life.

Donations to the Annual Fund will go directly towards this major refurbishment which will be part of the University’s Cultural Precinct, a place where people can come together to view, share and explore exciting creative and artistic ideas.

Winthrop Professor Ted Snell, Director of the Cultural Precinct, said the facility would comprise a major open performance, screening and exhibition space on the ground floor, an exhibition space in one of the two shopfronts and a home for a community arts organisation in the other.

“Upstairs there will be an ‘in-the-round’ performance space, a small gallery space and two artist-in-residence studios one for visual artists and designers, and one for writers, choreographers and musicians. A laneway bar at the rear will complete a lively centre for creative activity.”

The Alumni funds of $150,000 will help to solve access issues for this building with the initial work helping to make this art complex a welcoming and accessible place for the community.

Bequest that comes from the heartJohn Harriott is a jewel in the University’s precious collection of treasured donors.

The retired anaesthetist is what is known as a living bequestor: he has made a substantial bequest to establish a Chair in the School of Psychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience but he didn’t want to wait until he had died for his funds to become available.

He and his wife had no children and Dr Harriott (66) says he is lucky to have been born a baby boomer, in a period when it was relatively easy to make good investments.

As well as establishing the Chair, with all its associated expenses, Dr Harriott has set up the John Harriott Bachelor of Medical Science Scholarship in honour of Professor Mary Lockett, who inspired him in this philanthropic endeavour.

Several UWA-trained doctors have established these scholarships, in honour of the founding professors of Medicine, to encourage medical students into research.

“It gives me great pleasure to be a bequest donor,” he said. “I have taken on a large task, seeking to provide a Chair in the medical school, but this is very important to me”.

Dr Harriott said some refer to philanthropy as ‘giving back’. “But I don’t like that phrase. It implies obligation. But I think you ‘give back’ by simply going out into the community and using your skills to the best of your ability. Medical graduates quickly do this”.


“A bequest is a freely given gift that comes out of gratitude, without any sense of obligation. And it helps to make the world a more caring and joyful place.”

Dr Harriott had a long and rewarding career in both clinical anaesthesia and teaching.

His interest in medicine and his philanthropic leanings were seeds that were planted when he was a 10-year-old boy.

“My uncle had been a medical orderly during WWII and he gave me his pocket book First Aid for the Injured. I was inspired and joined the St John Ambulance cadets and learnt basic first aid and attended public events with the senior volunteers”.

His mother joined the civil defence force in England during the war and spent the whole time, including the ‘Blitz’ in London, working with the ambulance corps.

“It had an enormous impact on her, one from which she never fully recovered, and I remember as a child her episodes of depressions. I suspect this had an influence on me, as well as me having some of her DNA,” he said.

That remark makes sense when you understand why Dr Harriott decided to leave his money to psychiatry, to fund a Chair in mood disorders, or depression and bipolar disorder.

He had originally planned, in the late 1980s, to do this for anaesthesia, which at that time had no professors, but later events changed this.

“This is a heartfelt gift”.

“The mood disorder I am referring to now is not just unhappiness, but depression, which may vary from short-lived and mild to being very profound where the patient is almost inert. Some proceed to suicide”.

“I have been there, and it is a long road back. It has personal and family costs and can be a living death”.

“Depression also costs our nation about the same as all the types of arthritis and muscular problems, including back injuries. It is a large burden for our society, and it can affect anyone, but it is one which people often don’t want to mention”.

“I want to say that I suffered from deep depression during the early to mid-1990s, which went unrecognised by me. I am a bit obsessional, as are many doctors, and I was working in an exacting field. There were increasing staff and clinical pressures on the anaesthetists within my hospital, along with external organisational pressures which I regarded as largely unnecessary”.

Dr Harriott sought help from UWA’s Professor of Psychiatry, Geoff Riley (now Head of the Rural Clinical School) who is known as ‘the doctors’ doctor’.

“Geoff did – and I am sure still does – great work with doctors and their families, a disproportionate number of whom suffer from depression,” he said. “He was a huge help to me and we talked about how I could help doctors with depression, and he told me how widespread it was in the community”.

“We talked about how I could help more widely and we concluded that UWA would be the ideal vehicle”.

“A professor can provide patient care, carry out research and raise the profile of particular problems, all from within an institution which has integrity and community respect and which will be judicious and sensitive with the funds provided”.

“I thank Geoff Riley for many things, including his guidance along this path.”

Dr Harriott said that one of the highlights of his professional life was working with Professor Ian Constable, who established the Lions Eye Institute. I would like my bequest to provide a leader of a type that Ian Constable was for Ophthalmology.

Although Dr Harriott’s bequest is a major donation, he is adamant that a bequest does not need to be millions of dollars.

“Funding for research that resulted in polio immunisation was organised by the US President in the early 1950s. He asked children to send him $1 each year for three years, which thousands of American children did, and these small gifts led to a vaccine against polio”.

“The polio story is fantastic but true and shows how small donations and bequests can be valuable.”

the centenary trust for Women Dr June Jones ScholarshipFrom a family who believes in the transformative benefit of a good education, comes a new post graduate scholarship for women to upgrade their knowledge and skills as teachers.

The Centenary Trust for Women Dr June Jones Masters Scholarship in Education will be awarded for the first time this year and for the next four years to support women who are keen to take a Masters teaching degree at UWA but who are experiencing financial hardships.

Dr June Jones, a graduate of UWA, established the Centenary Trust for Women (CTW) in 2002 and was the inaugural Chair for 5 years and a member of the UWA Senate for 13 years.

She is one of WA’s most respected educators and was made a Member of the Order of Australia for services to education in 2000 and was awarded a UWA Honorary Doctorate in Education in 2007.

From a Senior Lectureship in the Education faculty at Curtin University Dr Jones took the position of Principal at St Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls, one of Perth’s best schools. She held the position for 18 years and made a huge difference to the school.

Dr Jones came from a family of teachers and lawyers and her daughter, UWA law graduate Sarah Beshar is now a senior partner with a global law firm based in New York. It is Sarah and her family who have donated the funds for the scholarship through the CTW in honour of her mother.

The Centenary Trust for Women was established to raise funds to encourage and support women facing financial difficulties while studying at UWA.

Hammond nisbet geoscience FundThe tragedy of two lives taken early, has been turned into a triumph for geologists and geoscientists in WA.

Last year, the UWA Geoscience Foundation announced the establishment and filling of a new permanent academic position in UWA’s Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET), the Hammond Nisbet Fellowship.

The campaign to establish the position, in honour of two brilliant exploration geologists, Dr Bruce Nisbet and Dr Rod Hammond, friends who worked together and died within months of each other five years ago, was a triumph for the UWA Geoscience Foundation and the UWA Geology Alumni.

The Geoscience Foundation joined with the Hammond Nisbet Founders to garner support from UWA Geology alumni,” she said.

The Geoscience Foundation had its genesis in the UWA Geoscience Alumni Group. The two groups merged in 2009, cementing 10 years of successful fundraising to ensure UWA geology and geoscience graduates are highly trained and ready to become part of their global industry.

It operates under the UWA Hackett Foundation, and is the University’s most successful fund-raising alumni group and a significant benefactor to UWA.

Their next mission is to secure funding for two industry-sponsored academic positions.

Almost $1.5 million was raised and UWA undertook to provide matching funds to create an endowed $2.8 million teaching and research position, contributing to the CET’s vision of a sustainable long-term research enterprise.

Foundation Chair, Jenny Archibald, said the campaign’s goal was to inspire and mentor the next generation of exploration geologists by providing a world class teaching and research environment.

“Bruce and Rod were well-known in the field, not UWA graduates, but working extensively in WA, alongside UWA graduates,” said Mrs Archibald. “Rod lived in Mexico in the last period of his life and died at the age of 49 after contracting histoplasmosis from caves in which he was working.

“His great friend and colleague Bruce died just four months later after a brief battle with cancer.

“But before he died, he said he wanted to set aside capital to stimulate long term support for teaching in exploration geoscience. He appointed four colleagues, Craig Williams, Peter Williams, Michael Etheridge and Nick Archibald to oversee the process.
