1981-1982, a new beginning Being "born again" Wentworth

experienced numerous monumental changes at both the structural and cadet levels.

Many of these memories will always occupy a special niche in our minds. Memories, such as the historic reconstruction of the burned buildings, and the honoring of Mark Kaetzel's heroism. Even the symbolic and neglected doughboy which possesses so much history. If only he could speak!

Of course, no one will forget the events that were taken for granted at the time.

Immortal and traditional Wentworth! One of a kind!

WENTWORTH Wentworth, Wentworth, bless your heart, Wentworth that we love so well. We'll always be true, and stand by you, Wentworth that we love so well.

On my honor as a cadet officer at Wentworth Military Academy and as a member or an associate of the Reserve Officers Training Corps of the Army of the United States of America, do solemnly swear, without any mental reservation whatsoever, to support the rules and regulations of Wentworth; to perform all duties and assignments properly given me; to look after the welfare of the cadets under my command; and to defend the honor and reputation of Wentworth Military Academy, SO HELP ME GOD.

A typical day at Wentworth -but there is no such thing as a typical day. Things happen so quickly. Here no one knows what will happen next. A person could get a call from his girlfriend or get a promotion or maybe even 30 demerits for being up after taps. The name and faces will always change, but when we return, it will be the same school that taught us how to handle stress and problems and most of all, how to be a gentleman.

Life at Wentworth continues from week to week from the Sunday parades and marching into the mess hall three times a day. Relaxing in a room and listening to the stereo after a hard day of classes, or telling Col. Gant that it wasn't our fault and hoping we can get out of being stuck.

Even the unexpected helped to shape this year. A parachutist landing on the parade field or Col. Sellers receiving a flag from the Marines.

Military Department

Ends lOOtii Year

One hundred years ago military influence came to Wentworth. The department has changed many times since its inception, but it still provides the overriding influence that makes this school into a military academy.

The department will lose its leader this year as Lt. Col. Sligar retires. He has only been with the school a year, but he will be missed by many. As the times change, so must we all, and that change will continue forever.

First Row: Capt. Thompson, Mrs. Christophene, Ssg. Estevez, Msg. Dancer; Second Row: Capt. Alexander, Lt. Col. Sligar, Maj. Mills, Sgm. Perkins, Sfc. Stroman.

We're lost??!

Frueh takes a breaK. Military Science III and IV

cadets have had enough experiences to write a book. When we leave Wentworth we'll have Basic and Advanced camps behind us. Those little gold bars they will pin on us will have many memories attached to them.

Remember the sub-freezing FTX's and the time the SMP's went for a ride. How about all those weekends at the National Guard, and don't forget that summer at Basic camp. With these memories behind us, we now stand on the threshold of the future. What lies ahead only time will tell.

No guys, you can't take it home.

Every year the Annual Formal Inspection takes place at Wentworth. A team of inspectors comes down from the second region ROTC Regional Headquarters and looks at everything from bathrooms to a parade.

All of us remember being told how tough and hard the AFI would be in the beginning of the year. So day before the inspection, the campus undergoes a massive cleanup. The makers of Spic and Span, Brasso, and Pledge must have made a fortune. Cadets saw parts of their room they had never seen before.

When the inspection was over the corps was congratulated on the job they did preparing for it. Not

nly did we pass that "impossible nspection," but most people were running around saying, "Was that all! It's over already?"

Col. Smith Inspects. Teamwork

It's a Bird! It's a Plane!

No, it's Supercadet!

A Parachute Club was formed In the fall by Lt. Col. Ian Sutherland, former member of the Army Special Forces and an experienced and enthusiastic jumper.

The Lexington Airport is a center for jumpers in this area, some coming regularly from as far away as Iowa, and it has a good program of instruction as well as equipment rental.

Because of the risks and the expense involved, parental permission was required for all who participated in the program.

college service fraternity. They work actively behind the scenes throughout the school year. They sell food and drinks at the ball games and at Mil Ball. They decorate for the Christmas dance. They fill pop machines in the barracks.

But even with all the things they do around campus they still are most remembered for the AP dance held at the first of the second semester. All of the members dress up in costumes and really liven up the dance. They even have a jail where you can put in anyone from your company commander to Col. Gant himself!

The club membership was divided into younger and older groups, each meeting once a week. Filmstrips and lectures were supplemented with hands-on experience. Is Amis after the ball or blood? '^fiuiWT- u,T J m J k . 2 ^ ^ M

At the beginning of the season everyone thought the soccer team would be blown off the field. But Coach Johnsen and Coach Gillis kept up our spirits and even after we lost the opening game they had faith in us.

When the season ended, the soccer team had managed to do what five previous teams had not been able to do, come away with a split 3-3 season. Even though we may have occasionally kicked the ball in the wrong goal or collided with one another every now and then, we can remember that every point we made or lost was a well fought point. There wasn't a single game that wasn't tough because we made them all miserable for our opponents. Good job, soccer team.

High School wins five

The high school football team started practice in the last part of August. The hot 90 degree weather and twice a day practices were enough to get anyone in shape within two weeks. Throughout the season the team spirit and hustle brought the Dragons a 500 record for the year.

Coach Butherus, (who has coached the team for 28 years,) replied that this year's team was as good as any team he has coached for several years.

Special awards for the season were All Conference: Hicks, Gault, Simington, Balentine; Honorable Mention: DePaz, Nelson, Boyd.

Junior High Football

The 1982 season marked a first for Capt. Ken Napier. He was now the team's new coach replacing Capt. Jay Allard. The year started off promising by winning the home-opener, but as the team lost their next two games their inspiration declined.

However, the team captains, Oscar Ruiz and David Hanneken, managed to lead their team to a final record of 2-2. Many of the teams members that show good talent will be ready for next year's varsity play.

The junior high basketball team coached by Capt. Wood did not do as well as they had hoped. The lack of talent and togetherness resulted in a 0-6 record for the season. Harrison and Goetze showed their ability by leading the team in the scoring department. Henderson exhibited his rebounding power throughout the season. team failed to show that they were a talented team this season. With a final record of 2-24 the team did not experience victory to the fullest. In the early part of November Capt. The wrestling team coached by Capt. Francis Johnson took an unexpected 1-11 record for the season. Lack of participation and talent contributed to their losing record. Delta The memories of Delta Will never go away, For in all our hearts Delta will always stay.

We had many times Of pleasure and madness. And othertimes Of grief and sadness.

When problems would arise We became a team, For we were like a pair of Levi's And no one could break the seam.

We were like a family In every aspect of life. For we always stuck together In times of trouble and strife.

We were just a bunch of rowdies Trying to make it through school. And the ways we went about it Were sometimes kind of cool.

We had two C.O.s Toloudis and Alabre, For they were by far the best And in our hearts they stay.

The things we did Are over and done. But what counts the most Is we all had fun.

We must close this poem now And stop talking about the times, For myself and Pud Are running out of rhymes.

We thought we'd write this poem To show you that we cared. For Delta will always be in our hearts

And all the times we shared.

We wish all of you the best of luck, and we hope that life is good to you. Live life to its fullest, and make something special of yourself. For we have faith in all of you that you will be successful in whatever you might do. For you have been a part of the best family you could possibly dream of. May you always remember your second family.

Echo Remember when Stone

shaved his eyebrows thinking that the shaver didn't work, but he found out that it worked real good. What about when the company gave Lt. Bollat his Morry, what a surprise! Remember when Capt. Wayne gave everybody a nickname because it was hard to memorize the names at the beginning of the year?

What about the company award for the company party, everybody got at least one super medal. What about push-up parties at the First Sergeant's style? And saying good night to Ronald Reagan, do you think he heard us? I'm sure Chesty did. Remember when First Sergeant tried to sing and everyone started to cry?

The people who made it work.

Foxtrot Ah, remember Foxtrot company at the

beginning of the year? A bold company commander who was never quiet. An X.O. that was always quiet. The First Sergeant that was never in a good mood, even on open weekends. And we will never forget the multitudes of platoon leaders.

What about the problems of finding uniforms that would fit? Mendez who couldn't find an overcoat small enough, and Herzog who couldn't find a hat big enough. The drill team who performed to a standing ovation. And all the video wizards. Sergeant Hoggatt's command voice, and Sergeant Wilson's silver pen. And also Maj. Dickman's wrath and generosity throughout the year.

Yes, the beginning was rough, but taking all the semester awards made it all worth it. And now the end is here and our motto stands even greater than ever.

"Foxtrot is outa sight, we will always stay and fight. We will never run, cause Foxtrot company is Number One!"

Foxtrot enjoys recreation.

Honor Guard Remember when Lt. Alabre

tried to drop the Guard at practice and nobody moved? Remember when H.G. was allowed to wear their $8.75 berets? Remember when we all had to lock our doors one night and Tim Holmes didn't have any Doritos and Pepsi? And when R.O.T.C. meant "Run off to Casey's"?

Remember when we all got stuck off limits while painting our weapons on the roof? Remember when Hawver crossed the rat line? How about when Murk was crippled by a typewriter? Remember when "Top" stripped Perry's bed one morning, and when SFC Stroman took off with the van in Ames. Remember when we visited the Air Force Academy? And remember when . . .

Doing what we do best.

Headquarters Remember when Col.

Gant had to guard the girls side of the dorm from the boys' side in Colorado? (Or was it the other way around?) Remember Cable's quick reaction drill on the bus? Remember going off? Remember when Lt. Stahlnecker woke up First Sergeant Rainbolt and feathers were flying? Remember all of the steak dinners we won for disciplinary and scholastic achievement?

Remember the Alamo

in Colorado and the punk rock dance at the YMCA? Ah yes, and all those favorite sayings like OUTSTANDING, That's a fact Captain, or how long?

Yes, through thick and thin Headquarters is still the elite company on campus. No matter what Headquarters has to work with it still through hard work, teamwork, and pride manages to win the Basore Award and be "OUTSTANDING!" Yeah you got it, sir! . J H ^ \ '^U 1^'v. ' r*-
