And God’s call has come — and still comes — in countless ways, including in lofty visions, among crowds of people, and in the midst of unabashedly simple work. The presence of the so-called “Hound of Heaven” is everywhere. Thinking “I am not worthy” didn’t work for others, and it won’t work for us. We may as well put our energy into watching and listening. PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE – ‘Educating the Heart!’ Dear Friends, Last week, I reflected on our call to be the ‘face of Jesus’ for one another and especially for our children as parents, teachers in our Catholic schools and catechists in State schools. As our young people return to school, we affirm parents as the first and best of teachers of their children, with the primary responsibility of passing on the Faith as best they can, in many cases in partnership with our Parish and School Communities. We need to be passionate about education and support our children’s schools, whether Catholic, State or private. Our schools can and do make a difference in the lives of our children and their families, and Catholic schools in particular have a special responsibility in forming our children in the Faith. I am always very moved at the sight of children returning to school, the careful preparation by parents, the often new uniform, and the backpack which at times seems bigger than the wearer! This past Friday, both Parish schools gathered for their Opening School Masses, a reminder that the Eucharist both forms us in Faith and expresses who we are. Family participation in the Sunday Eucharist is an important statement to our children and strengthens us all on our Faith journey. We face a massive challenge in sharing our Catholic tradition, that sense of Catholic identity or belonging, which comes from Christian family life (the domestic church) and being part of the wider Church community. Being Catholic won’t mean much if we don’t feel at home in the Church. For some, the Catholic school may provide the only experience of ‘church’ that a child or family has and so it needs to make a difference. St Augustine was a student, parent and teacher who described a spirituality in education which, he tells us, is about educating the heart. Christ the Teacher lives in our hearts and those who teach must be life-long learners themselves and help children discover what is in their hearts – insights you won’t find on any My School website! Parents and schools face so many challenges when forming children in faith and I am profoundly aware of the ‘gaps’ that are evident when children leave school. I suspect that we have entertained unrealistic expectations, particularly of our Catholic schools, over the years. Let’s be honest! Which of us was ‘fully formed’ as a Catholic Christian when we finished school? As a Parish Community, let us pray for our children and their families, for our teachers and catechists, and extend a warm welcome to all, especially when we gather for Eucharist. Health Matter – I need to inform you about a personal health matter that has arisen recently. Following some routine medical tests, I underwent an angiogram at the SAN Hospital in Wahroonga a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately the results were not good. Three of the heart's arteries are blocked and so I will now undergo triple bypass surgery on 1 March. Recovery period is expected to be around 8 weeks. Be assured that the pastoral care of the Parish will be in good hands during my absence. Thank you for your support and genuine concern. Fr Dave.

IN THE CARE OF THE AUGUSTINIANS

The Catholic Community of North Harbour

Readings this Sunday Isaiah 6:1-8 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 Luke 5:1-11 Responsorial Psalm “In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord.” Readings next Sunday Jeremiah 17:5-8 1 Corinthians 15:12. 16-20 Luke 16:17. 20-26

Today’s readings attest to the fact that God’s call list is littered with seemingly unworthy people.

PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE – ‘Educating the Heart!’

Dear Friends, Last week, I reflected on our call to be the ‘face of Jesus’ for one another and especially for our children as parents, teachers in our Catholic schools and catechists in State schools. As our young people return to school, we affirm parents as the first and best of teachers of their children, with the primary responsibility of passing on the Faith as best they can, in many cases in partnership with our Parish and School Communities. We need to be passionate about education and support our children’s schools, whether Catholic, State or private. Our schools can and do make a difference in the lives of our children and their families, and Catholic schools in particular have a special

responsibility in forming our children in the Faith. I am always very moved at the sight of children returning to school, the careful preparation by parents,

the often new uniform, and the backpack which at times seems bigger than the wearer!

World Day of the Sick – Monday 11 February 2019 The theme for this year’s World Day of the Sick is: “You received without payment; give without payment” (Mt 10:8) In his message for World Day of the Sick, Pope Francis calls for a culture of generosity, and reminds us that generous gestures, like that of the Good Samaritan, are credible means of evangelisation. He highlights that life is a gift, and says that “amid today’s culture of waste and indifference, I would point out that ‘gift’ is the category best suited to challenging today’s individualism and social fragmentation.”

The full message can be accessed at http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/messages/sick/documents/papa-francesco_20181125_giornata-malato.html
