ANNEX 7: WORKSHOP IN RHODES ISLAND

Introduction
In the framework of the project “Work on the implementation of the EU Eco-label scheme in the areas of marketing, product group development and stakeholder representation; Lot 8”, one of the obligations of SPEED SA is to organise a workshop addressing to Kos and Rhodes hotels for presenting the Ecolabel for tourist accommodation services
The present report is describing the workshop organisazion and materialization activities that were held by Stella Alexopoulou and Maria Menounou from SPEED SA in Greece.
Activities
Mrs Alexopoulou contacted Mrs Kriara, environmental responsible of SUNWING RESORT KALLITHEA, Rhodes to discuss the possibility of a workshop organization at Rhodes at the end of April 2006. Mrs Kriara brought us also in contact with the Hotels Association of Rhodes. The workshop was finally postponed and rescheduled for the beginning of October (9th October 2006). The reason for rescheduling was estimation that the participation would be low as the hotel owners were engaged at the preparation of their facilities for the forthcoming high touristic season (April – September).
After the workshop date was settled the organisation activities started in close cooperation with Mrs Kriara from Sunwing Resort. An invitation and a participation form were prepared and sent to:
110 hotels of 3-4-5 stars in the islands Rhodes and Kos
local tourist operators,
the Dodecanese Tourism Organisation and the Rhodes’ Tourist Operators Association.
The invitation was sent by Fax and e-mails.
Additionally, seven hotels partners of My Travel North were invited by e-mails and personal phone calls.

Moreover, the invitation was forwarded to LTU Touristik -German Tourist Operator (contact person Mrs. Wende), as they expressed their interest to have their partner hotels in Rhodes invited. Mrs. Wende arranged with Mr Ernst Leitner to forward, by themselves, the invitation to their partner hotels in Rhodes.
Mrs Kriara also invited:
the representatives of Environmental Department of the Prefecture,
Mr Kaikis of the Environmental Department of the Municipality of Rhodes
Mr Ipsilantis and Mrs Santzes of the Department of cleaning services of the Municipality of Rhodes
the representatives of Water supply and drainage works department of the Municipality of Rhodes
The presentations were held by Mrs Stella Alexopoulou, Mrs Maria Menounou and Mr Ion Gonos General Manager of Sunwing Resort and Director of Operations Area East.
The presentations’ themes were the following:
Mrs Alexopoulou -“Ecolabel –Creating the conditions for Sustainable Tourism Enterprises”
Mr Menounou – “Ecolabel Application process - Criteria Presentation”
Mr Gonos – “Initiatives for the environment and selection of EU Flower”
Its was attended by 19 participants from hotels. Unfortunately, the representatives of the local authorities, the tourist operators and the associations did not attend the workshop.
The workshop was covered by the local TV channel “IRIS TV”.
The participants had interesting questions on the criteria regarding the following:
If the criterion 69 “Breakfast packaging” goes against the principles of HACCP.
How they will find ways on giving away the separated recyclable materials and hazardous waste. If there are any local authorities’ facilities or contractors accepting these kinds of waste in their area.

If there are any incentives provided by the Greek government to promote the Ecolabel application at hotels.
The investment cost and the cost reduction of the various automated systems and dose meters that Sunwing resort installed in order to apply for Ecolabel.
The questions were discussed between SPEED’s staff, Mr Gonos and the audience and very interesting findings came out about the waste management, the infrastructure of the island for solid waste disposal and treatment. Also, Mr Gonos proposed the attendees to avoid as much as possible the interference of the hotel staff and the installation of automatic systems, if possible, as human factor may cause problems to the application of specific criteria. As an example, he mentioned the automatic dosing system for detergents and disinfectants and the modern Building Management Systems (BMS) that provide a wide range of control functions: fire control, security, power monitoring and air conditioning control.
Many attendees expressed their interest for the Flower as they regard it as a marketing tool which will be necessary for their business in the near future.
