Pastor’s Letter for October 2017 “…..One little word subdues him.”

That famous line is from the hymn “A Mighty Fortress is our God,” Luther’s most well-known hymn. Recently Pastor Paul and I watched the new Luther movie called, “Martin Luther: The idea that changed the World.” It was very well done and we plan to get a copy for the church. At the end of the show they tried to summarize Luther’s legacy and they said it could be summed up with the word “forgiveness.” The makers of the film thought that Luther’s discovery of God’s radical grace shown to us in the forgiveness of our sins in Jesus Christ was the lynchpin in his whole theology.

It made me wonder what you and I would say if someone asked us to summarize our understanding of the faith in one word. Would we say: grace, mercy, thanksgiving, love… what one word is key? I imagine that different words work at different times. This month I think “thanksgiving” is a big word for me, even though November is really the month of the official Thanksgiving holiday. Still there is always so much to be thankful for. Right now, I am thankful to God for the Spirit moving among congregational members to respond generously to the stewardship Consecration Sunday on October 1. I also think “thanksgiving” when I think of our Harvest Home Sunday when we particularly focus on the blessings of food that we have been given and can share. Then we also have both 1st Communion and Confirmation for our young people this month. What a blessing it is to see this growth in faith.

Interestingly enough, I don’t think Luther would have boiled it all down to the word forgiveness. He probably wouldn’t have chosen thanksgiving or mercy or even grace or love. But the one word that Luther wanted us all to remember, the word referred to in the hymn verse above is: JESUS. Jesus subdues the devil. Jesus is the victor.

In the end that’s what it all boils down to – out of His great love for us God sent us Jesus. It is through Jesus that we have forgiveness and it is because of Jesus that we give thanks. And so, we worship and give thanks to our God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit for this gift of life and salvation through Christ our Lord! Pastor Sally

SPECIAL APPEAL FOR October: Current Fund Most of our special appeals are for benevolent causes as we look beyond our walls to special worthy causes. The finance committee asked us to have one month to draw extra attention to our regular budgetary needs. Please consider taking this opportunity to go over and above in your support of the congregation’s day to day ministry needs. Thank you for your on-going generous support. From our intern: The start of the school year for many is here as well as in my seminary education. This also means that this marks the start of my internship here at Saint Paul. I am excited and so blessed to be on this journey with you, the Pastors and the whole congregation. I am currently pursuing a Master’s of Divinity degree through the Master’s Institute, which is on the LCMC approved seminary list. They are located in Minnesota. The program is mostly online with a few required trips through the three-year program. Their approach to seminary education involves three areas of focus: Spiritual & Character Formation(heart), Biblical Teaching(head), and Leadership Training(hands). Thank you for partnering with me, your prayers and encouragement. Also, please come talk to me, the pastors or the internship committee members if you have questions, concerns or suggestions. My hope and prayer is that through this experience we will all grow together in every way surrounded by the love of Christ. Chuck Mann

Upcoming Church Family Events! These activities are for EVERYONE!

Crop Walk- Oct. 8 at 12:30 This is an annual event that our congregation participates in to raise money for local organizations that help combat hunger. We will be meeting following second service to eat a quick lunch together (please pack your own lunch) before heading to East Berlin. We will walk throughout the town (there are sidewalks) fellowshipping and raising money for the hungry. Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC) This month we want to highlight a small but important ministry that we have established with Zion (Shaffer’s) United Lutheran Church near Seven Valleys. Zion is a small but warm LCMC church which currently has a pastoral vacancy. In response to a request from them, the pastors have been visiting their sick and shut-ins for a couple of months now. Zion only has four shut-ins and a few hospital folks to see each month, though this of course can vary, and Saint Paul is reimbursed for the pastors’ time and mileage in performing these duties, money which goes in the miscellaneous category of our congregation’s budget. The people at Zion really appreciate this ministry and it is enabling them to have time to figure out what is on the horizon for future part time ministry for them. We are glad that we can partner with Zion in this way and are thankful for this outreach.

THANK YOU

Dear Members of Saint Paul Lutheran Church, Developing countries are full of opportunities for ministry. People are searching. They recognize need. Haiti is no exception. Life in rural Haiti is a life of poverty. It’s a life of doing without many things that other people would call necessities. But that kind of life make people ready to listen and ready to learn. Being a teacher in such an environment is a true ministry. It is one that Andy Stump has embraced. Andy and the Asaph board of directors thank you for your continued and generous support of his ministry through your donation of $1,700.00 to Asaph Teaching Ministry. Ronald Saylor, Secretary Asaph Teaching Ministry Thank you to Saint Paul for the donation of $1500.00 to the Gideon's International. Your generous gifts allow God's lifesaving Word to be shared around the world. Isaiah 55:11 "So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it." Sincerely, Allen Dickensheets- York South Camp of Gideon's International

First and foremost, recipients use their LWR Quilts to shield against the cold and rain, and for warm bedding. But their versatility also makes Quilts useful for many other purposes as well. Thanks to all those who have donated materials for these quilts. Since last Oct. our quilters have made 112 quilts!!

Thanks to all those who make quilts! Our quilters are: Bernice Eash, Mim Root, Bertha Spahr, Marguerite Keller, Evelene Young, Jenny Walter, Donna Sprenkle, Joyce Hall, Donna Rinehart, Louise Frye and Linda Ronan.
