Surface Technology Inc., Trenton, N.J., a world-recognized leader in electroless nickel prod- ucts, has established an exclusive distributor arrangement with Galkim Finishing Technologies of Istanbul, Turkey. GE Betz, Trevose, Pa., has opened a facility for regenerat- ing membrane separation ele- ments at its production complex in Bakersfield, Calif. The propri- etary process is designed for membrane elements that can no longer be cleaned effectively in the field and would otherwise have to be discarded. It can

restore quality performance, extend membrane life, and increase the time interval between cleanings at a fraction of the cost of membrane replace- ment. Permeate flow can be increased, with a corresponding decrease in differential pres- sure. The off-site cleaning process minimizes system down- time and eliminates chemical purchase, handling, and disposal problems.

Atofina Chemicals Inc., Philadelphia, the world leader for polyamide coating powders, announced the launch of its Certified Coater Program. The initiative was designed to ensure that custom coating companies, using Atofina’s Rilsan, adhere to specific standards of quality dur-

Presentation of the Heckel Award is made at the Opening Session of the Federation’s Annual Meeting, held this year at the Morial Convention Center, in New Orleans.

The Heckel Award recognizes the outstanding contributions that an individual has made to the Federation’s interest and prestige. Established in 1951, the award is dedicated to the memory of George Baugh Heckel, who served as temporary Chairman when the Federation was organ- ized in 1922, and as Secretary for many years thereafter.

The Association for Finishing Processes (AFP), within the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has published a valuable 325page users’ guide for powder coating applications, “The Guide to High Performance Powder Coating” by Bob Utech. The book is easy to read and has several graphics and photographs that illustrate the principles being discussed. Utech has given a well rounded general overview of all of the topics that a powder

coater needs to know about; how- ever, the book is fairly basic and will be more useful to those who are getting into the technology for the first time, than for those who are already experienced in the field and are looking for more in- depth information. On the other hand, this book makes a very nice companion to “Powder Coating- The Complete Finisher’s Handbook,” published by the Powder coating Institute. If you own both books, you will not be unhappy, since each book con- tains some material that is not well covered in its companion book.

This is book is available from the SME, www.sme.org. Price: $72 for SME members, $85 for non- members
