In the Spirit of Saint Vincent de Paul: The Body of Christ in
Action
A directory of parish service opportunities
In order for God’s word to take root, believers must do more than
merely listen to it. They must act upon it.1 The Body of
Christ is what we receive, what we are, and what we believe.2 We
are called to serve and our efforts make a difference in the
world!3 Through the grace of God, our individual gifts are unique.
Nourished by the Holy Eucharist, and with a
determined heart, how will you choose to use your gifts to serve
our parish community?
The first step in planning a Ministry Gift is to take an inventory
of your unique skills, talents, and personal qualities.
Practical
skills such as the ability to listen, to be compassionate, to lead,
to dream, to energize, to teach, to be hospitable, to be
congenial, to be reflective, to complete a task, to encourage
others are invaluable. Gifts to be shared include having a special
rapport with the disabled, homeless, various age groups, civic or
social organizations, teaching experience,
personal prayer experience, public speaking, finances, parenting,
etc. Furthermore, there is a call for those who have
the ability to sort, gift wrap, play chess, rotate seasonal
flowers, answer a doorbell, iron, lay out a buffet, create joyful
noise, model reverence, and be easy with a smile. Your time
and talent make a difference!
For as in one body we have many parts, and all the parts do not
have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ
and
individually parts of one another4.
Our Mass has ended. Our service begins.

St. Vincent Choir Steven James 757-722-0773
[email protected]
The St. Vincent music ministry is composed of a choir of men
and
women who proclaim the Word of God in scriptural, inspirational
and
religious songs and compositions. The ministry conducts these
functions through the use of group performances (choir),
cantors
(congregational song leaders) and instrumental compositions
by
piano and other musical venues that enhance the liturgy of
our
Catholic faith.
A. The choir meets each Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. for
rehearsal and one and one-half hours prior to each scheduled
Choir Mass on the second and fourth Sundays of the month; the
cantors meet one hour before each Mass to review the music
and
order of the Mass on Saturdays (4:00 p.m. & Sundays, 9:00
a.m.);
instrumentalists meet as required for rehearsal and one hour
prior
to the scheduled Mass. All these components of this ministry
are
also to be prepared for and stand ready to provide
appropriate
music for weekly and special events that require music,
i.e. Christmas, Holy Days or Easter Triduum.
B. Our Formal Requirements are in order to sing at a 2nd
and/or
4th Sunday Mass, choir members MUST have attended
Wednesday rehearsals. An audition with the Music Director
is required for participation in any musical avenue selected.
C. Our specific roles entail our serving Jesus Christ through
the
proclaiming of His Word in music as choir members, cantors,
or instrumentalist with dignity and respect of the Catholic
tradition and by honoring Christ through the appropriate and
dedicated reverence befitting the King of Glory.
Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord; cry out to the rock of our
salvation.
Let us greet him with a song of praise. –Psalm 95:1-2

This is a ministry that is great for people who want to serve the
Lord and the parish from their own homes at their own pace! This is
a behind-the-scenes ministry that is one of the MOST ESSENTIAL in
providing for Holy Mass, as it enables the liturgy to take place,
and involves handling the cloths that come in contact with the Body
and Blood of Christ.
Additional ministers are being sought for (1) sharing the ministry
(approximately 2 hours per week) and/or (2) learning the ministry
to assist during high-use times (Holy Week and Christmas/Solemnity
of Mary) and fill in occasionally during vacations or illness.
Training and instructions will be brief and can be done at
ministers’ convenience.

Altar servers help the priest to lead God’s people in prayer.
Servers carry the cross, the processional candles, hold the book
for the priest celebrant when he is not at the altar, carry the
incense and censer, present the bread, wine, and water to the
priest during the preparation of the gifts or assist him when he
receives the gifts from the people, wash the hands of the priest,
assist the priest celebrant and deacon as necessary. The care and
attention altar servers give to their ministry allow the prayer of
the Church to take place with reverence and beauty.
This ministry is open to men and women, plus boys and girls who
have received the sacrament of First Holy Communion and who are
practiced at being reverent during a Mass with the congregation.
Training is required and provided with multiple opportunities to
practice. Time commitment is as scheduled for weekly Masses and
liturgical celebrations. Altar servers arrive 20 minutes prior to
the start of Mass. Ushers/Greeters Parish Office 757-245-4234

[email protected] Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Offered during the 10am Sunday Mass, this program is designed for
children ages 4 through 2nd grade. This is a liturgy of the word
for our young people, where they will hear the same scripture
proclaimed during Mass, but read and explained at their own
level.
Vacation Bible School Margaret Jerasa
[email protected]
A week-long experience offered mid-summer annually for the children
of the parish, with youth and adults supporting as group leaders
and station directors. Each week has a theme and is full of music,
crafts, games, service, fun and learning. Planning begins in May
and the program traditionally takes place in July. Volunteers are
needed in many capacities: planning and preparation, publicity,
donations, decorating, week-of support, and more!
Volunteers are needed to lead sessions, all materials, training (to
include VIRTUS), and support are provided. Commitment is one Mass
every 4-6 weeks depending on size of volunteer team.
Sacramental Preparation: Confirmation
Youth who are in 10th grade or older are eligible to prepare for
the sacrament of Confirmation. Preparation for Confirmation is
separate from and in addition to religious education--either by
participating in the parish youth program or by attending Catholic
school. Registration begins each year in July, and preparation
begins with a parent-candidate session in September. Volunteers
needed throughout year varies from help with administrative
support, session support for retreats, help with hospitality during
receptions on day of sacramental reception, etc.
Family Foundations (K-5th Grade)
This program takes on the format of whole family catechesis
(child/children and parent). Bi-Monthly meetings based around the
themes of the liturgical year, feature hands-on, interactive
activities, with music, stories, discussions, and crafts. Our goal
is to support the domestic church by empowering and supporting
parents in handing on our Catholic faith to their children.
Consumable materials with parent implementation resources (i.e.
textbook) will be sent home from each gathered session to support
ongoing formation in the home and life of the family. Sessions take
place on scheduled Sunday mornings 8:45-9:45am, at Saint Joseph’s
Codier Hall. Volunteers are needed to help as catechists, as
administrative support, preparing materials for classes, etc.
Sacramental Preparation: First Reconciliation and Holy
Communion
Children who are in 2nd grade or older and have already been
baptized are eligible to prepare for the sacraments of First
Penance and First Holy Communion. Sacramental preparation is
separate from and in addition to religious education—either by
participating in the parish "Family Foundations" program, or by
attending Catholic school. Sacramental preparation is a combination
of parent led home-study and gathered sessions. For each sacrament
(Reconciliation and Holy Communion), parents are asked to attend a
parent session that includes formation and where they are given
resources to work with their child at home to prepare. At the end
of the home-preparation process, parents and children attend a
retreat experience. Registration begins each year in July, and
preparation begins in September.
Youth Formation and Ministry (6th-12th Grade) Margaret Jerasa
[email protected]
Youth ministry for our middle and high school teens. This program
will include all aspects of effective and engaging youth
ministry--formation, service, spirituality, and social. Sessions
are held on Sunday evenings 6:30-8 pm at Saint Mary’s Hall.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
RCIA is the process by which adults, whether unbaptized or baptized
in another Christian tradition, become members of the Catholic
Church. Formation includes several areas with the goal of engaging
the individual in their lived faith: scripture, teachings, prayer,
mission.
Adult Formation
Year-round opportunities are provided for learners of all ages to
engage in faith formation wherever they are in their faith journey.
Offerings take the form of bible study, topical series, guest
speakers, retreats, missions, days of reflection, and MORE. Current
offerings are highlighted in the parish bulletin. Volunteers for
adult formation can help as facilitators, table-discussion leaders,
small-group leaders, with hospitality, or with administrative
support.
With the process of Christian Initiation, men and women at all
stages of their faith journey come together in a non-threatening
and non- pressured atmosphere to learn more about the Catholic
Church. R.C.I.A is a year-round program, and inquiring adults are
welcomed into the process at any time. There is no firm ‘start
date’ for participating.
Youth ministry also involves attendance at regional and diocesan
events such as camps, retreats, and conferences. Post-Confirmation
age youth have the opportunity to serve on our Youth Leadership
Team, which serves in an advisory and leadership capacity to the
youth program. Youth ministry is delivered by a trained core team,
and help throughout the year is often needed in the form of guest
speakers, hospitality, and service project support, as well as
administrative tasks.
Formation is also available for adults who are baptized Catholics,
but, for whatever reason,
have not received any subsequent sacraments (Reconciliation,
Communion or Confirmation)
and are seeking to prepare for them.

Do not conform yourself to this age but
be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern
what is the will of God,
what is good and pleasing and perfect… For as in one body we have
many parts,
and all the parts do not have the same function, so we, though
many, are one body in Christ and
individually parts of one another. Since we have gifts that differ
according to the grace given to us,
let us exercise them. –Romans 12:2, 4-5

I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower… Remain in me,
as I remain in you…By this is my Father glorified, that you bear
much fruit and become my disciples. As the Father loves me, so I
also love you. John 15:1, 4, 8
Notes and Reflections:
Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again; rejoice! Your
kindness should be known to all…Then the peace of God that
surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds
in
Christ Jesus...Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is
honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is
lovely,
whatever is gracious…Keep on doing what you have learned and
received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be
with you.
-Philippians 4:4-5, 7, 8-9
