2 HR NEWS Salt Lake City Corporation
We are thrilled to report that Mayor Biskupski and the City Council unanimously supported the development of a corporate university for City employees and funding has been provided for both instructor-led and for online courses to be made available this fiscal year.
Corporate universities are very common in Fortune 500 companies and have a proven track record of providing employees with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed and in helping to build great organizations. For example, employees who work for Disney, Apple, and Microsoft all have a dedicated Employees’ University. And now Salt Lake City Employees will have one too!
This new program will be managed by Human Resources - along with a lot of help from an appointed employee board of directors. The board consists of broad representation across organizations throughout city government. And their role will be to help ensure we are providing training opportunities that meet employee and organizational needs.
It is also important that we get input and ideas from you – our employees. Later this month HR will send out a citywide survey. Please be on the lookout. It will provide you with a chance to influence what types of training courses and programs might be made available for city employees. And of course, please feel free to provide input directly through any Board Member or directly through Human Resources.
Stay tuned for more information in the weeks and months to come regarding available courses and training opportunities!

I am thrilled to join the HR team as the Deputy Director! There are many exciting initiatives happening within HR and I am very eager to work with a great group of HR professionals and their many talents. Over the past few weeks and for the weeks to come, I will be getting to know more employees and the significant roles played by each. I look forward to assessing how we in HR can assist and support you in your roles.
With many new and exciting things to come, I am focused on ensuring the successful launch of resources for the City’s employees with a new website, Employees’ University and job application system. Watch closely as HR continues to evolve and provide a solid foundation of a customer centric approach with assisting and supporting our organizational needs!
I am very excited to join the team here in Salt Lake City. The Mayor has assembled a team full of fabulously talented, capable people sharing a vision of service excellence. Together we are going to do great things.
We have a very full agenda of fascinating, innovative technology projects and ideas, and I could not be happier than to be involved in making a difference for Salt Lake City Corporation and its constituents.
I want our centralized technology department to be the model that other municipal governments look to as the model to emulate - and to be the very best in the world at what we do. We will build on our software support, central computing infrastructure, network services, software engineering, user support and administrative management capabilities to make that vision an obvious reality. How invigorating!

A faster, easier way to see a doctor.
See a doctor via mobile or web. This service is a great option for after hours, weekends and holidays. Use Amwell for fevers, ear infections, cold, flu, allergies, migraines, pinkeye, stomach pain, and much more.
We are lucky to have low turnover here at the City, but we do have employees who move on to other job opportunities. It is important to know why people choose to leave our organization. As a result HR offers confidential Exit Interviews to employees who resign from the City.
Departing employees will be encouraged to complete an exit interview either online or in-person with an HR representative. Employee comments will be kept anonymous and a summary of the responses will be used by HR to address any organizational concerns.
The exit interview process is now available. Supervisors or departing employees themselves should contact Darlene Harper at 801-535-6607 to schedule an interview. Online interviews will be made available at a later time.
On May 18, 2016, President Obama and Secretary Perez of the U.S. Department of Labor announced the publication of the final rule updating the overtime regulations, which is intended to extend overtime pay protections to over 4 million U.S. workers within the first year of implementation.
The direct impact of these new regulations on employees of Salt Lake City Corporation has been determined to be minimal.
Following a closer review of the City’s various pay structures and individual rates of pay, adjustments necessary to ensure compliance have already been made.
No additional changes will be required when these new overtime regulations go into effect December 1, 2016.

Many of our divisions and departments conduct important community outreach and public events where it is necessary to designate which staff members speak Spanish.
To help at these events, the Mayor’s Office of Community Relations has purchased some “Hablo Espanol” buttons for Spanish-speaking staff members to wear at these events.
If you have an event where you could use these buttons, please call 801-535-7901 or come to the front desk in Human Resources and we will issue buttons.
And a big thank you to Susan Lundmark from the Redevelopment Agency for this wonderful suggestion!
