Launch of New Undergraduate Programmes CoE has launched a new undergraduate programme for the 2015 admissions year, namely Engineering with a Second Major in Society and Urban Systems. Besides, an additional track on International Trading is offered for the new admissions in the existing double major programme - Engineering with a Second Major in Business. Engineering with a Second Major in Society and Urban Systems

With rapid urbanisation and population growth, big cities are seriously analysing sustainable urban living, land use and liveability. Anticipating a global renaissance in urban systems engineering, CoE and the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CoHASS) have joined hands to offer a new and insightful interdisciplinary programme on contemporary urban systems. The new programme ‘Engineering with a Second Major in Society and Urban Systems’ will be anchored in the four core Engineering disciplines, namely Civil, Environmental, Electrical & Electronic and Mechanical Engineering. This new programme incorporates knowledge and skills in social, political, economic and cultural aspects of urban systems planning and policy-making, while retaining the firm Engineering content of BEng programmes. Students will read courses in physical and environmental studies, urban economics, public policy, and some new courses and case studies that are being developed in collaboration with the Centre for Liveable Cities. This new second major aims to prepare students to face the multifaceted, complex urban challenges and help them to synthesise integrated perspectives and solutions for sustainable built environment, and improved quality of life. Graduates of this programme can look forward to a plethora of career opportunities and professional development in the public and private sectors. International Trading Programme The International Trading Programme (ITP) is a collaboration with International Enterprise Singapore (IE), and our partner in this double major, Nanyang Business School (NBS). This is offered as an additional track, or specialisation, to selected programmes including Engineering with a Second Major in Business, Maritime Studies, and Maritime Studies with a Second Major in Business.

The ITP is the culmination of more than 2 years of discussions with IE, following industry feedback on the demand for graduates with technical competencies in global commodity trading. On 31 January 2015, Senior Associate Provost Prof Kam Chan Hin, representing NTU, signed a Memorandum of Agreement with IE for the establishment of the ITP.

The ITP presents an attractive programme option for prospective, top calibre students. In addition to scholarships, students will enjoy study trips and internship opportunities at global trading corporations, including Fortune 500 companies. The ITP will be managed by the newly established multidisciplinary Centre of Excellence for International Trading at NBS.

Nanyang Venture Cars Wow Crowds at Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2015

NTU wowed crowds with its two innovative and attention grabbing cars, Nanyang Venture 8 and 9, in the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2015 held at Luneta Park in Manila, Philippines from 26 February to 1 March 2015.

Nanyang Venture 8 (NV 8) is Singapore’s first urban solar electric car. This innovative vehicle, which comprises over 150 3D-printed parts mounted on a carbon fibre single shell chassis, attracted a lot of attention and praise from other participating teams, judges, officials and visitors. The other entrant is Nanyang Venture 9 (NV 9), which is a sleek three-wheeled racer with contoured solar panels. It is equipped with a unique tilting ability that allows the vehicle to take sharp corners with little loss in speed. It also comes with hand-made contoured silicon solar cells, which allows maximum harvesting of solar energy at every angle. The electric solar car beat more than 124 other teams from 16 countries to seize top spots in the Technical Innovation and Safety categories. This makes NTU’s second Technical Innovation award and fifth Safety award at the Shell Eco-Marathon competitions. The two NTU teams consist of 16 students from various engineering schools mentored by Professor Ng Heong Wah from MAE. Congratulations to the two Nanyang Venture teams for their success in the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2015.

The students also had the opportunity to find out about all the engineering programmes through a presentation. The learning journey ended with a networking session over light refreshment. Welcome back, NS Men! Following the success of the first outreach event for Returning National Service (RNS) Men in 2014, CoE organised the second run of the event on 7 February 2015 at Tan Chin Tuan Lecture Theatre. Attended by approximately 240 young men, the event aimed to address the concerns and worries of their transition from army life to student life. The Dean opened the session with an engaging speech to welcome the attendees. Thereafter, Prof Wong Chee How shared with the participants, the vibrant campus life and pointers for a successful transition to student life, after having been away from books for 2 years.
