NewsBirthday Boost for Needles Half MarathonTo celebrate their 25th anniversary the IW Road Runners have donated £250 towards this year’s Needles XC Half Marathon.
A cheque was presented to Clare Griffin, manager of the West Wight Sports Centre, by Simon Randall and Kev Fry from the club. The charity has taken on the organisation of the event which takes place on Sunday 2nd June. Clare says; “We’re tremendously grateful for the support the Isle of Wight Road Runners have offered us. As it’s our first year running it, we wanted to offer something extra to competitors. This sponsorship will help towards the cost of the technical t-shirts everyone will receive in their goody bags.”
Jo Randall – also from the running club - says they were delighted to be able to help out “We could think of nothing better than honouring this popular and excellent half marathon as part of our 25th birthday celebrations”.
The 13 mile route takes in some of the most scenic views of the West Wight, including the old railway track to Yarmouth, Headon Warren, the Old Battery and Tennyson Down.
The event is now in its tenth year, having previously been organised by the West Wight Road Runners. Other sponsors this year include Betapak, Love Running and Alum Bay Glass who have donated the winners trophies.
Entries are being taken online via the sports centres website www.westwight.co.uk/needles-half until 26th May. However if you don’t feel you’re up to tackling the course, you can join FAT Samba who will be playing along the route and offering encouragement to competitors.
CAT Mark: Take PartThe CAT Mark is a Mark of Quality, awarded by young people, for organisations based in Hampshire, providing some or all of their services to young people. A CAT Mark award shows your organisation is young person friendly and has a commitment to involving young people.
CAT Mark: Driven by Young People
The CAT Mark scheme was developed by young people and is awarded by young people who undergo training to become CAT Mark Assessors. Young people have shaped all aspects of the award including the way assessments are carried out and what they assessed.
Why get a CAT Mark?
The CAT Mark is a very special recognition to achieve, as it is awarded by the very people for whom your service is delivered. Being awarded a CAT Mark is a true indicator that the service you provide is meeting the needs of young people and is young person friendly.
Want to get a CAT Mark?
If your organisation is based in Hampshire and you provide some or all of your services for young people then you can apply to be CAT Mark assessed. Your organisations will be assessed against set criteria including Involvement of Young People, Equal Opportunities, Environment & Resources and Links to other Services. Examples of organisations that have been awarded CAT Marks include: children’s homes, youth projects, schools, information and advice services, counselling services and health services.
Want to be an Assessor?
CAT Mark assessors are volunteers aged 13 to 21 years who want to make a difference and have their say about services for young people? Assessors have the potential to listen well and communicate with people of different ages. No formal qualifications are needed as training will be given to enable you to become a CAT Mark assessor.
Volunteer and support CAT Mark
CAT Mark Support Workers are volunteers who enjoying working with young people, supporting them to learn and develop and empowering them to make a real difference. Its also a chance to learn new skills and meet new people.

New project to support mental health wellbeingA new walking group is to launch in June to tackle issues such as loneliness and social isolation on the Island.
It’s being set up by the local charity Way Forward. “Physical exercise and spending time outdoors have been shown to improve mood and mental health” explains programme lead Lee White. “But even more importantly the new group will give people the opportunity to make new friends and offer encouragement to get involved in community activities.”
The circular walks will run every Sunday morning starting at 11am. The first one takes place on 9th June starting at the main car park in Yarmouth and will go along the old railway line to Freshwater. Each walk will also include a stop at a tea rooms or café.
The group is open to anyone over the age of 18 who is looking for help to cope with a mental health condition such as depression or an anxiety disorder, as well as those with learning disabilities. The group is free but participants will have to pay for their own refreshments.
“We can provide transport if getting around the Island is difficult for some, but places are limited” says Lee White. To book a place on the walks, contact the Way Forward office on 01983 823000.
The initiative is being funded by the NHS and Isle of Wight council as part of the Mental Health prospectus.
More information on other activities provided through the Way Forward programme can be found on their website.

Your SayWe want to make sure that people with a learning disability have the same opportunities as everyone else and that their voice is heard.
We are 3 organisations working together; Southern Advocacy Services, People Matter IW and IW Mencap. We have lots of experience supporting people with a learning disability to have a voice and we are really good at empowering people to speak up for themselves.
We are looking for people with a learning disability and carers to volunteer to be part of a group looking at how you can be heard and represent others.
If you would like to take part and attend meetings and learn more please fill in the form here and return to Terri Baker, People Matter IW, Downside Community & Learning Centre, Furrlongs, Newport, Isle of Wight PO30 2AX.

Praise for Fund-Raising Efforts of Cowes RNLI GuildThe significant role played by members of the RNLI’s Cowes Guild in responding to the appeal for the town’s new lifeboat station was underlined at the guild’s annual meeting.
Anna Morgan-Crockett, guild chairman, declared, “I cannot praise too highly the hard work and dedication of our members. They worked flat out during the entire appeal, giving many hours of volunteer service, well above the call of duty.”
Other highlights in the year were such fund-raising events as a jubilee lunch at the Royal Yacht Squadron, an Olympic Cruise in the Solent, a summer party, afternoon teas, coffee mornings, and lunches.
The annual meeting, held at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, learned that a varied pro-gramme of guild events was planned for the coming year. “We greatly look forward to working closely with our boat and station volunteers to raise more money for the charity dedicated to saving lives at sea,” added Mrs Morgan-Crockett.

Thank you
We would like you to join us in helping our armed forces personnel – those currently serving and our ex-servicemen and women living in our community.
We’re developing a pledge or ‘community covenant’ which aims to make it easier for service personnel, their families and veterans to access the help and support available from the Ministry of Defence, statutory providers and charitable and voluntary organisations on the Island.
We also would like this pledge to recognise and remember the sacrifices made by the armed forces community and encourage activities which help them feel a real and valued part of local life.
Whether you work for a charity, voluntary or public sector organisation or whether you have been, or still are, a serving member of the armed forces or a family member, we’d like to involve you in an afternoon workshop/discussion to help shape our Island community covenant.

Training and EventsFit for FutureSocial Enterprise UK are hosting its fifth annual health conference: “Fit for the Future – Delivering Care and Value”, on 17th June in London.
With the Health and Social Care Act in place, and the Francis review highlighting the importance of engagement with patients, carers and their communities, there is growing opportunity for social enterprises and voluntary sector to deliver more of the UK’s health services. We’re hosting this practical event to help charities and social enterprise better engage with national health bodies and commissioners. The event is a chance for delegates to network with experts in leadership, business and organisational development, and key social enterprise leaders and national health-sector influencers, as well as take part in a number of practical sessions.
We ran a similar event in Nottingham this time last year – very well attended and got great feedback.
