Vof the IOWA Catholic Daughters

Dear Catholic Daughters, Our deep appreciation to our state and local officers and members who planned, made the arrangements and participated in our State Convention in Fort Dodge! To me, hopefully to all present, and, all the members of our local courts, a truly spiritual and rewarding time of renewal and inspiration. May we continue “Making Challenges Golden Op-portunities”. In our resurrection joy, we continue to live the Easter, Ascension and Pentecost mys-teries and pray that we can fully appreciate and present these holy gifts that we have received to the human family thirsting for the life and love that our Savior offers to all of us. In the Ascension time, Jesus had prepared the Church he had already established to fully understand that they (we), the Church, would become his living and visible presence for all time. May we believe that he continues to prepare us when we contem-plate his Word and his example that we can become willing and prepared to be faithful to the trust that he has placed in us! Having entrusted us, he will also provide his power through the grace of the sacraments and the guidance and gifts of the Holy Spirit. For forty days our Lord granted forgiveness, understand-ing, inspiration and the unfolding of God’s plan for the life of the Church, our lives. He then called us to carry on His ministry, not only in Jerusalem but also “to the ends of the earth”. We are called, like Mary, the Apostles, the Church, to continue and prayer-fully reflect on our place in this commissioning. The “two men dressed in white” (angels) con-tinue to ask us why we are stand-ing in our “safe” or comfortable

places looking up to the sky while Jesus, himself, is waiting to be loved, encouraged, forgiven and blessed by us in all of our broth-ers and sisters and the commu-nities where God has placed us through his providential wisdom. He has already made available the opportunity and gifts we are called to share to spread the good news.Pope Francis reminds us: “Be-ing Christian is not just obeying orders but means being in Christ, thinking like him, acting like him, loving like him; it means letting him take possession of our life and change it, transform it, and free it from the darkness of evil and sin. Dear brothers and sisters, let us point out the Risen Christ to those who ask us to account for the hope that is in us (cf. 1 Pet 3:15). Let us point him out with the proclamation of the word, but above all with our lives as people who have been raised. Let us show the joy of being children of God, the freedom that living in Christ gives us, which is true free-dom, the freedom that saves us from the slavery of evil, of sin and death! Looking to the heavenly homeland we shall receive new light and fresh strength, both in our commitment and in our daily efforts. This is a precious service that we must give to this world of ours which all too often no longer succeeds in raising its gaze on height, no longer succeeds in raising its gaze on God.” General Audience, April 10, 2013 “O Holy Spirit, Paraclete, perfect in us the work begun by Jesus” Pope John XXIII

Sincerely in Christ, Msgr. Carl L. Schmitt, State Chaplain

From the Desk of Your EditorDarlene Moritz

Heard on the radio the other day, “Hope you enjoyed your one day of Spring”. That made me smile. How about you? We Catholic Daughters of the Americas are movin’ on whether it feels like Spring or Summer. At the State convention in Ft Dodge last April, it almost looked and felt like winter!! This issue will capture many of the activities of 2013 that have been going on. Convention was for sure a huge success but we have also celebrated some 100th Anniversaries of courts with more to come. At the State convention I mentioned that we want to add some news from our National office. It isn’t just for the state officers to know what is going on out there in New York, but you folks need to know too. (And if your Regent forgets to tell you what was in the quarterly newsletter from National, you can find it on line at www.catholicdaugh-ters.org and read it all for yourself) Use the computer at your local library. The winners of the educational contest are listed and I will put the written articles in future issues. Congratulations to the new members listed since the spring issue. You have chosen to a part of an orga-nization that gives you Spiri-tual Benefits all year long!

Share that with someone you care about too. Many courts are working on invit-ing new members. Great! We sincerely hope that you new members will join many others in the coming events of CDA. Anna Baxter Day next June in Cedar Falls and the National Convention will be July of 2014 in Billings Montana and there is a good possibility of going together on a bus. Wouldn’t that be a hoot! And hopefully you will be able to attend one of the four workshops this fall. (Dates are not set as of yet). The next issue of The Voice will be sent out around the 15th of Septem-ber instead of the 1st in hopes of including more current information from the National Office. Since that mailing date is later, the deadline for the next issue (September) will be Sep-tember 1st for you to send in your articles and pictures. So send your information; email me at: [email protected] or mail to P O Box 474, Milford, IA 51351. Be sure to include your Court # in the subject line. If you have questions or concerns call 712-330-6725. Looking forward to hearing from you all.

Sisters in Christ, Darlene Moritz, First Vice Regent of Iowa

State Regent’sSummer Report

Dear Blessed Catholic Daughters, First of all, I want to sincerely thank you for allowing me the privilege to serve as your state regent for the past two years. I am humbled and truly hope that I am able to meet the needs of the Iowa Catholic Daughters of the Americas in this position for another term. Thank you for your confidence in me. I would like to thank Janet Laubenthal for her dedicated work as our second vice state regent this past term and welcome Betty Pratt to the state board as our new state secretary. As we each anticipate our roles: Darlene as 1st Vice State Regent, Jan as 2nd Vice State Re-gent, Betty as State Secretary and Sheila as State Treasurer I’m sure that we will certainly be able to meet the ‘Golden Opportunities’ with God’s graces. Now that our 50th Biennial Convention is history, I sincerely hope that each of you have received some valuable information and ideas. Even if you weren’t able to attend, I trust that your sisters who were there are sharing the in-formation with you. You can also visit our great Iowa website, www.IowaCatholicDaughters.org to see a nice slide show of some of the activities of the convention. Congratulations and thank you again to the hosting courts for all of the prepara-tion and help during the convention and to all of the courts who supplied the very nice raffle items and showcase displays. Elsewhere in this issue is a recap of the convention. Jan does such a neat job of writing our history, thanks Jan! Many/most of the financial reviews have been received. Remember, you are to send a copy of the review to National, Your State Secretary, Your State Regent and keep a copy for your records. Also, don’t neglect to add the number of members in your court to the form where it is asked for. That helps both you and us to keep track so that

you are not paying for more members than your court actually has. Without this information, we can’t help you as well. Again, some of your state officers had the privilege to attend some wonderful court anni-versaries. Thank you for your invitations to these memorable events. Please don’t forget to also in-vite past state regents to these functions. Remem-ber, these ladies continue to have a great concern for all of our Catholic Daughters. Let us all help to keep them both informed and in our prayers. As we all wrap up our CD of A meetings for the 2012-2013 season and plan for the 2013-2014 season, let us continue to work on increasing our membership. We had some dynamic increases from some of the courts this past year. Congratu-lations on the good work and let the rest of us join them in the list of increased membership for the next year. Anne Nelson, our National Regent, said that CDA is “a gift, a challenge, a group of Catholic women working in the vineyard of the Lord”. Let us not be selfish, we need to share this gift that we all benefit from! Remember ’Until every Catholic lady is a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, OUR WORK IS NOT DONE’. Let us all share and invite. Don’t judge that a lady does or does not want to join us unless we graciously ask her. May you each enjoy a safe and happy 4th of July weekend with family and friends. Your state officers will be attending a State Officers Conference in Belleville, IL. July 11-13, 2013. At this conference, we plan to garner as much information as we can to share with you. We are part of a national organization and as such we do try to keep you, our membership well informed. Your Sister in Christ, Rose Holschlag, Iowa State Regent

Spring Greetings, my dear Iowa Catholic Daugh-ters! I hear that you had a wonderful State Conven-tion- so wish I could have joined you! I would like to thank your State Officers for all the work they put into making it a great convention as well as for the count-less hours of work they have devoted to taking care of Iowa CDA for the past 2 years. Congratulations for the “new” board- those serving a second term in the same office, one who is transitioning into a new office, and one new lady! While many courts are looking forward to a break from meetings this summer, I would encourage you to do a little planning right now to prepare for the busy CDA months in the Fall. The following are some things to think about: 1) How will our court encourage even more participation in the Education Contest by both young people and our CDA members alike? The themes for 2014’s contest will be sent out to the court regents in the Fall so be watching for it. 2) If your court doesn’t have a newsletter, how about starting one this Fall? Newsletters are such wonderful tools for keeping our members involved and more active. They also educate new members as to what we do and why we do it. Finally, newsletters are a dynamic tool to use in drawing in new members! 3) How about a Fall Membership Drive? Have you read about the “Dig in for Members” Membership Drive? How about the $500 award to the local court who brings in the most members, by percentage, from April 1, 2012, to March 31, 2014? Enjoy some summer relaxation- with the late spring snow storms, I think most all of us are looking forward to warm summer breezes! God Love You,Vickie M. Feist

Dear CDA Members, My surgery is over and I must send a special “thank you” to all who remembered me in their prayers and cards. It went well, now I must take it easy for six weeks. After that I’ll be back to my normal self. I felt bad not being able to attend the State Conven-

tion. My court reported it to be a great convention. What else do you expect out of Iowa CDA Members!

Thank you again for your support. Mary Pester

Although the Catholic Daughters courts are not always directly affili-ated with one parish, they can be an important part of the parishes their members hail from. Several courts throughout Iowa are made up of members from 3 or more parishes. Council Bluffs’ court serves five par-ishes. We work very hard to be known and to assist with all of the parishes. This is not as easy as it is for those who serve just one parish, but it can be done and actually should be done. One way we communicate with the parishes is our system of Parish Rep-resentatives. The member who serves in this leadership position connects with the parishes on a regular basis about bulletin flyers, programs, reli-gious education and RCIA programs, LifeSaver drives, raffle sales, etc. They are key to making this relationship happen. Our court has chosen to partner with the city parishes by promot-ing their youth and how they serve their parishes. We have a Good Faith Award which is given by the Catholic

Daughters but selected by the pastors. A high school senior is awarded this each spring at their parish graduation celebration Masses. We also pro-vide funds for each parish’s religious education program, First Communion program and altar server groups. Connecting with those adults from the parishes who are joining the Cath-olic Church through the parish RCIA program is an excellent way to show our support of them in their faith journey. Each fall we purchase a Bible for the candidates and include a note in the Bible with our thoughts and prayers for them. It is also a good way to connect with future court members! Partnerships with parishes builds strength for your court as well as awareness of all the good that you do. Each parish should consider your court “theirs” because you are so pres-ent and supportive of them. Protect that partnership as you plan your programs and donations and public relations activities and you will reap the rewards that will help your court grow.

Help me to be worthy of the name“Catholic Daughter”

Local Court NewsCDA MEMBERS FROM COURT ST. ANTHONY #330 Council Bluffs

TAKE ACTION FOR PRO-LIFE MINISTRY

By Mary Sue Wickham, CDA Public Relations CorrespondentCatholic Daughters Court St. Anthony #330

Recently, two members of the Catholic Daughters Court St. Anthony #330 took action and became involved with a Pro-Life Ministry. This Pro-Life Ministry is a new Program that was added among the many activities and community events that the CDA Court St. Anthony #330 is involved with.

Angela Shea and Sue Meidlinger became new Members of the Catholic Daughters Court of St. Anthony #330 this year. Both ladies serve as Board Members for the Gabriel’s Corner Pregnancy Counseling Center located in Council Bluffs, IA. Gabriel’s Corner operates solely on caring, professional volunteers and donations. Two registered nurses are available administering ultrasounds and many educated counselors offer free pregnancy tests, confidential counseling, parenting classes, facts on STD’s, facts on the morning after pill, Norplant, RU-486 and other material needs. Many clients of Gabriel’s Corner are young women who are unmarried teenagers facing an unwanted pregnancy.

Gabriel’s Corner strives to help the woman keep her baby.

Deacon Jean Plourde and his wife Kathy, the Founders of Gabriel’s Corner, hold true to their mission statement as stated in the Gospel of Luke: “The Angel Gabriel announced to Mary the birth of her child who would become the Savior of the world. It is the Mission at Gabriel’s Corner to announce to pregnant mother’s that they, too, carry in their womb one of God’s precious infants made in His Image and likeness for a specific

purpose.

A Holy Hour of Prayer is dedicated and held every Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. in the Gabriel’s Corner Chapel. There they pray to end abortion. Also they pray for the conversion of Planned Parenthood Doctors and Staff. They pray for the many women who’ve had an abortion for their healing. They also pray for the man who lost his chance to become a loving father to the baby that was aborted. Thus, they continue to pray to end abortion. On the 3rd Saturday of the month, Gabriel’s Corner is blessed to celebrate Mass with one of our local priests. Anyone is welcome to come pray at Gabriel’s Corner

on a Saturday morning.

Angela Shea and her friend Sue Meidlinger became the Pro-Life Resource Gals for the Catholic Daughters Court St. Anthony #330 because of their great volunteer experiences with Gabriel’s Corner. Both Angela and Sue have participated in the “40 Days For Life” Life Chain which is held the first weekend in every October. They also have attended many religious conferences held in Des Moines.

The State of Iowa has many wonderful Pro-Life locations and online links to help educate our culture and community. Below are a few of the many pro-life links. These are all excellent resources to stay informed as to what is really going on in our country and it speaks the truth. Also we are very blessed to have Spirit Catho-lic Radio in our local community on Radio Dial 102.7 FM.

On the Television Station EWTN has also many religious resources and saints praying for us.

The theme of the 50th Biennial State Convention was “Making Challenges Golden Opportunities”. That was exactly what over 240 Catholic Daugh-ters did all around Iowa in April when they turned the challenge of wintry, snowy weather into a golden oppor-tunity to attend the State Convention. The convention was held April 19 -21, 2013 at the Starlite Village Inn in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Convention Chairman, Rita Carlson from Fort Dodge, and the nine host courts from the Sioux City Diocese are to be commended on their work and organization, attend-ing to every detail, to make this a very successful convention. Our sincere appreciation to all of them.

Opening ceremonies began with a beautiful procession for Mass includ-ing robed National, State and Local Court officers, Knights of Columbus and the Iowa Air National Guard. Our State Chaplain Monsignor Carl Schmitt celebrated the Mass with Monsignor Lyle Wilgenbusch from Waterloo as concelebrant.

Keynote speaker, Father Jim Sichko from Richmond, Kentucky, gave a dynamic presentation entitled, “The Spirit of God Is Upon Us”. While Father provided much laughter, his message was very spiritually uplifting and truly memorable calling us to be authentic and striving to be the best we can be. He said we must walk the walk of Jesus, be in love with our faith and make scripture an essential in our lives.

State Regent Rose Holschlag officially opened the convention Friday after-noon. We were fortunate to have the National Secretary Treasurer Sherry Nilles present as well as Past Na-tional Director Helen Arndorfer and Past State Regent Rose Harper. We

remembered our Immediate Past State Regent Mary Pester in prayer as she was scheduled for heart surgery the week after convention.

The convention days were busy with much business to be conducted. New State Officers were elected for 2013-2015. They are State Regent Rose Holschlag, State First Vice Regent Darlene Moritz, State Second Vice Re-gent Jan Grundmeyer, State Secretary Betty Pratt and State Treasurer Sheila Graham.

A Nominating Committee was elected for 2015. Rita Carlson from Court # 216 Fort Dodge is the Chairman along with committee members Jane Roach Court # 152 Mason City, Lavonne Reinert Court # 1945 Ankeny, Marti Lynch Court 330 Council Bluffs and Julie Wiedner Court # 94 Iowa City.

The delegation voted to raise the State dues $.50 per billing or $1.00 per year.

Many awards were presented for various achievements. Sherry Nilles presented certificates to 19 courts that had increased their membership during the past year. Janet Lauben-thal presented the Education Contest awards and Darlene Moritz recognized the winners in the Local Newsletter Contest.

Sheila Graham reviewed the many items available on the website and updated the members about new features. Darlene Moritz informed the attendees about The VOICE stressing the importance of publishing the Local Courts’ news.

Sherry Nilles brought news from National including information about a $500.00 award being given to the Court with the greatest increase in membership between April 1, 2012

– March 31, 2014. She explained the “FUN”d Calendar members received recently and assured everyone that the two year CDA Calendar will be contin-ued.

There were several interesting rooms to visit as time permitted including the Showcase Room featuring attractive displays showing the activities from many of the courts. The winner of the Showcase was Court Isabella # 642 in Garner. The Raffle Room was truly awesome filled with beautiful and unique items with chances available to purchase in hopes of winning a favor-ite item. The CDA Supply room car-ried many articles useful to the courts and their members. The poolside hospitality provided a pleasant area to enjoy refreshments and fellowship.

Convention attendees enjoyed many delicious meals in a most welcoming atmosphere. The program for the ap-preciation banquet Friday evening fea-tured Monsignor Lyle Wilgenbusch. He had a great message with ideas for recruiting new CDA members. Jon Leonetti from Des Moines was the guest speaker for the Saturday evening banquet. He gave a very passionate presentation encouraging prayer and dedication to Our Lady.

A Memorial Service preceded the Mass on Saturday. The names of the deceased members of each court from the past two years were read as a candle was lit in their memory. Mon-signor Carl Schmitt presided at the Mass with Father Anthony Espinosa from Nebraska and Father Clair Boes from Rockwell City as concelebrants.

The Installation Mass for our Chaplain and new State Officers took place Sun-day morning. National Officer Sherry Nilles and Monsignor Carl Schmitt conducted the installation assisted by Helen Arndorfer, Rose Harper and Janet Laubenthal. Monsignor Schmitt celebrated the Mass assisted by Dea-con Dr. Tim Barry from Fort Dodge.

At the close of the convention raffle items were distributed. The name Rita Carlson was drawn as the winner of the $500.00 raffle. Announce-ments were made about future activi-ties for the Catholic Daughters.

Anna Baxter Day – June 8, 2014 hosted by Court # 2291 in Cedar Falls.

National Convention - July 2014 in Billings, Montana with interest being shown in the possibility of a bus from Iowa for members to travel to the convention.

State Convention – 2015 in the Des Moines Diocese with location to be announced.

The 50th Biennial State Convention had been a great experience. Much in-formation had been acquired and the Masses and speakers provided a spiri-tual fulfillment. Many new friendships were developed and former acquain-tances renewed. Rose Mary Snyder from Wesley and Mary Lou Ludwig from St. Benedict were recognized for their long time membership of over 60 years. The oldest member attend-ing the convention was Esther Zwei-bohmer, age 90, from Ossian and the youngest member was Lisa Risvold, age 27, from Des Moines. Members returned to their communities ready to continue making challenges golden opportunities as they work to spread the good news of the Catholic Daugh-ters of the Americas.
