This will include soloists and group perform- ances in dance, drama and music from students from the Early Learning, Primary, Middle and High Schools and will display the wide variety of our students’ talents. Following the concert we invite everyone to join us at a cocktail party and to take the opportunity to view the children’s artworks. The Primary School production of ‘Hooked on Peter Pan’ will be performed at NIDA on Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th September and tickets will be available from Ticketek next week. The cast and crew are all working hard to perfect their performances and I am sure that we are all in for a wonderful spectacle. Thank you to Dean Hattingh, Jo Karney and Delia Harrington who, along with their hardworking team, are putting in an enormous amount of time and effort with rehearsals. During the past few weeks I have had the great pleasure of meeting many new students and their families and taking them to visit the classes. Many of our visitors have commented on the friendliness and good manners of our students and I would like to congratulate them and their teachers for making our guests feel so welcome. HAPPY BIRTHDAY

The Reddam House Community would like to wish a very happy birthday to

Jake Lloyd, Lily Ko, Nicholas Kelemen, Marc Mennes, Tullie Zimmerman, Ryan Chong and Talia Wijesinghe

who celebrated their special day this week .

We hope you all had a fabulous day!

To encourage good reading habits and a positive approach to books and literature, this term Mrs Sciacca will convene a series of reading workshops.

All Year 5 and 6 students are invited to be part of the workshops which will give them the chance to relax and enjoy an extended period of sustained silent reading. It will also be an opportunity for students to learn about books - and share their opinions about them - with their peers.

Reading workshops will be held on Thursday afternoons from 3.10 to 4.00pm.

Any interested students should meet Mrs Sciacca outside her classroom with the book they wish to read. The work-shops will be conducted in the library.

READING WORKSHOPS

To celebrate Book Week the Kindergarten children all wore their pyjamas to school on Thursday and couldn’t

resist having a little nap after reading all their new books.

As Spring approaches we would like to utilise our wonderful Reddam garden space.

Please e-mail

[email protected]

if you are willing and able to help out with any of our garden projects.

Last Friday all students in Years 3 - 6 attended the Australian Museum to celebrate Science Week by participating in Science in the City.

The students were exposed to a number of scientific hands on activities and demonstrations from astronomy to nuclear technology and beyond. All the activities were presented by scientists from local universities and organisations such as CSIRO.

Judging by the reactions and comments from the students everyone was completely engaged and everyone had an enormous amount of fun. The presenters were very impressed by the level of knowledge demonstrated by the Reddam students.

What do you get when a tango-dancing-magician is let loose in a zoo? Read on to find out!

The Great Renaldo One sunny spring morning at Taronga Zoo, The Great Renaldo was doing one of the best magic shows that he had ever done in his life. He was getting so many tips from the audience that he was going to go home rich. He was just about to finish his act, and for the finale he had to dance the tango with a monkey. The Great Renaldo and the monkey did one full tango successfully. “Encore! Encore!” the audience shouted. Once again they started to dance, but when they came to the spin… “Ahhh!” Renaldo screamed, “My ankle!” The Great Renaldo had tripped. The zoo medic called an ambulance to take Renaldo to the hospital. When he arrived, the doctor said that Renaldo had broken his ankle. They also said that he would never be able to dance the tango again! When The Great Renaldo heard this, he was so upset that he did not respond. All he could manage was a small polite smile. Renaldo could not believe he would never tango again; that

was the best part of his act. The next day, Renaldo was allowed to return home to get some rest. He could not drive so he took a taxi, and then limped on his crutches all the way to his house. Once inside, Renaldo rang Taronga Zoo to tell them that he had to rest for four weeks. A receptionist said that it would all be fine and that she hoped he would get better soon. For the next four weeks, Renaldo was at home. All he did was watch television and sleep. It was very boring. He wished he could go back to the zoo. When the four weeks were finally up, Renaldo rushed to the zoo to see his fans and to do his magic act. But when he arrived, he made a terrible discovery: The Great Renaldo had been replaced!

“What is this?” asked Renaldo “Oh, that’s the new magic act. They have replaced you,” said a zoo keeper. “But, I am all better,” replied Renaldo.

“Well, we had a call from the hospital to say you could not perform anymore,” said the zoo keeper. Shoulders hunched, and feeling terribly depressed, The Great Renaldo left the zoo. Things really had gone from bad to worse. Luckily, Renaldo was one tough ex-tango-dancing magician. He started looking for a new job the very next day, and he came across an interesting ad in the newspaper. It said: ‘Wanted, male belly dancer’. Renaldo rang the hospital to ask if it would be alright, and his doctor said yes. So the next day, Renaldo went to audition…

THE GREAT RENALDO

• A soccer ball is made up of 32 leather

panels, held together by 642 stitches.

• Golf the only sport ever played in space - on 6th February 1971 Alan Shepard hit a golf ball whilst walking on the moon.

• Jean Genevieve Garnerin was the first female parachutist, jumping from a hot air balloon in 1799.

• The game of basketball was invented in 1892 by James Naismith. As the game was originally played it was necessary for the players to use a ladder to get up and remove the ball from the basket.

• The high jump method of jumping head first and landing on the back is called the Fosbury Flop.

Last Thursday, Year 3 visited the Sydney Tower and the Wildlife World at Darling Harbour to support their learning in HSIE. The children enjoyed the spectacular view of Sydney from the tower and worked in groups of three to complete a “spot the site” activity.

The group then took a leisurely stroll down to Darling Harbour and, after having had lunch, they embarked on an interesting tour of Wildlife World. Luckily the crocodile wasn’t eating as it is winter, so no one was in danger of being his next meal. A very tired, but happy group of children returned to school just in time for assembly.

Raizel from South Head Synagogue Youth came to Reddam House on Tuesday to do a "mystery box" activity with the Kinder-garten and Year 1 Jewish Studies students for Rosh Hashanah (The Jewish New Year) .

The children each had a turn. They were blindfolded and had to pick out an object from the box. Then they had to guess what they had chosen and had to explain what it had to do with Rosh Hashanah.

In Kindergarten Nikki picked out apple and honey - we eat sweet foods because we want to have a sweet New Year. Sophia picked out the shofar which reminds us to do good deeds. Sophia even tried to blow it! Talia's good deeds weighed much much more than her mistakes. And everyone wanted to touch the fish, especially the head because we like to be a leader like the head not a follower like the tail.

In Year 1 Sacha picked out a huge shofar which is blown every day (except Saturday) in the month before the New Year. It reminds us to say "sorry" and to do lots and lots of good deeds. Jake picked out a scales - where we weigh our good deeds and our mistakes and hope that our good deeds weigh the most. Year 1 Jewish Studies children have been doing so many good deeds that we don't have anything to worry about! River picked out a fish - the head of the fish is put on our dinner table to show that it is the head of the year and that we always want to be a leader.

Shana Tova Umetukah - wishing everyone a happy, healthy and sweet new year. Miriam Marks
