Joining the aggregation in January 2015 will be: Ameghiniana, published by the Ar- gentine Paleontological Association; Candollea, published by the Conser- vatory and Botanical Garden of the City of Geneva, Switzerland; Journal of Wildlife Diseases, published by the Wildlife Disease Assocation; Polish Journal of Ecology, published by the Museum and Institute of Zoology, Polish Academy of Sciences; and Willdenowia, published by the Bo- tanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem, Germany. Each journal is a leader in its field and ranked in Thomson Reuters’ 2014 Journal Citation Reports®, thus enhancing the value of a BioOne Complete subscription for BioOne’s subscribers worldwide. BioOne participation likewise represents a key step forward for each of these nonprofit publishers by making their content more accessible to a global audience. Ameghiniana, published by the Argentine Paleontological Association since 1957, has recently introduced changes that aim to position it as a leading paleontological journal focused on Gondwana and the southern hemisphere. View from ALPSP

As a collaborative organization that draws support from the library, publisher, and vendor communities, BioOne is keenly aware of the value of community building and information sharing. We are proud to be a member of a number of industry coop-eratives and trade associations, both for BioOne’s benefit, as well as the benefit of those BioOne participants that may be unable to join in their own right.

ALPSP, the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers, of which BioOne is a member, held their annual inter-national conference in London (er, Heathrow Airport!) from September 10-12. I was very pleased to attend this event for the first time and meet a number of industry colleagues from both sides of the pond.

The educational program kicked off with a keynote from Amy Brand of Digital Science on “Innovation and its place in the changing scholarly communica-tion landscape.” Brand, previ-

ously a speaker at BioOne’s 2015 Publishers and Partners Meeting, spoke eloquently about those products, contributors, and technologies that are moving the industry forward. Particularly resonant was her point that we, as a publishing community are defining scholarly fields of inquiry by how and what we publish—both a privilege and a responsibil-ity, to be sure.

Amid a range of topical presenta-tions on open access, big data, and emerging metrics, the conference also highlighted the finalists for the ALPSP Awards for Innovation in Publishing. Among this forward-looking group was ReadCube Connect from Labtiva, with which BioOne recently signed an agreement for linking of the BioOne content aggregation, BioOne Complete (see the press release here) ReadCube offers users an en-hanced PDF viewer that embeds features like altmetrics and an-notation tools into each article for a customized and interactive

reading experience. BioOne congratulates Labtiva and the other award finalists for their contributions to a more in-novative scholarly publishing community. Learn more on the ALPSP site.

The ALPSP conference also served to stimulate topic ideas for BioOne’s own Publishers and Partners Meeting, to be held on April 24, 2015 in Washington, DC. We are busy preparing an exciting slate of speakers, to be announced early in December. Mark your calendars now; we look forward to seeing you then.

Announcing BioOne Mobile’s Redesign and New Features

In 2011, BioOne launched BioOne Mobile, our mobile-optimized website enabling users to access all BioOne Complete content on-the-go. Today, we are proud to announce that BioOne Mobile has undergone a major upgrade, including an interface redesign and many new features that make the research experience easier and faster on more devices.

What’s new? Device-specific optimization: this iteration of BioOne Mobile provides mobile optimization for tablets as well as smartphones. The mobile design for smartphones and for tablets are slightly different, each specific to the device’s strengths. The tablet design, for example, takes advantage of the larger screen with an option for “magazine view,” a new engaging layout. For iOS mobile devices, users can swipe rather than click to go to the next or previous page, article, or issue.

Improved interface: navigating BioOne content just became significantly faster. One example: BioOne Mobile’s upgrade allows researchers to browse journal content without having to scroll through nearly 200 titles. In the redesign, there is an alphabetic index along the scrollbar, so researchers can jump to a specific portion of title list without having to scroll.

Immediate and precise access: searching is easier and more precise with new filters that help researchers get what they need when they need it. To complement the “favorites” option which is still available on the new BioOne Mobile, we’ve added a down-load feature for offline viewing. Also for the first time, users can purchase Pay-Per-View articles on their mobile devices using an e-commerce process.

Supported devices and browsers:BioOne Mobile is now optimized for the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android phone, and Android tablets. Specifically, iOS 6.1 and later, on Chrome and default Safari browsers; Android 2.3 or later, on Chrome and default Android browsers for phones, Chrome browser only for Android tablets.

Because BioOne Mobile is not an ap-plication, you do not need to download, purchase, or update anything. Simply go to bioone.org on your mobile browser, and the new BioOne Mobile will launch.

You can find a guide for using the new interface and features on the BioOne site under “Resources.”

Publishers: Changes in Society Leadership?

It’s that time of year... as new individuals assume positions of leadership at your society or publishing organization, please let BioOne know by contacting Lauren at [email protected]. This is particularly important for Treasurers and other financial contacts, as we prepare to make Revenue Sharing payments for the 2014 volume year, to be distributed March 2015. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our records current!
