Australia’s new pathway for objectively measuring practitioners’ influence on pharmacy practice and impact on medicines management and patient care has been successfully launched with 63 pharmacists across Australia putting their hand up for credentialling.

Over the next 4 months, these pharmacists will build their portfolio’s with peer assessments and impact statements. In the program, practice portfolios will be assessed against five domains: Professionalism and ethics, Communication and collaboration, Medicines management and patient care, Leadership and management and Education and research. Successful applicants will be awarded recognized credentials as Stage I Advancing Practice, Stage II Advancing Practice or as an Advanced Practice Pharmacist.

Associate Professor Ian Coombes, Chair of the Advancing Practice Advisory Board, which oversees the new program, says “Advancing Practice recognition is for all pharmacists, regardless of their practice base and scope of practice”. This process is a key component of collaborative efforts to build a more skilled, flexible and adaptable Australian pharmacist workforce, ‘Advancing Practice provides independent recognition of career progression and achievement, with each portfolio of evidence assessed against five domains by expert evaluators. ‘In the longer term, an Advancing Practice credential should be used in employment models and as a basis to support and recognise workforce development in order to improve and expand pharmacy services ‘Ultimately, the process assures the Australian public and colleagues in the healthcare team that improving outcomes for patients is absolutely central to all pharmacists’ work.’

Importantly, your Society is providing valuable resources to applicants to support them through the process. These include:• Resources on the SHPA eCPD site • Discussion forum for applicants to network and discuss

the process• Step by step videos to guide you through developing

your portfolio• Evidence sorting table to assist you with collating your

evidence• Access to a mini-PAT for multi-source feedback • Access on request to mentors who have been through the advancing practice process• Personalised support from SHPA staff

If you would like further information on this important initiative, please don’t hesitate to contact me – as I am very keen to support local applicants in this process.

HOSPITAL PHARMACY RESEARCH CONTINUES TO STEAM AHEAD...Brock Delfante - Vice Chairperson

Research has continued to remain in the limelight recently, with a number of great publications in some really broad areas of interest in hospital practice. Below are three examples of published journal articles in areas of hospital practice that are currently receiving international interest - opioid stewardship and management, deprescribing, and pharmacist prescribing.

• Lalic, S., Gisev, N., Simon Bell, J., Korhonen, M. J., and Ilomäki, J. (2018) Predictors of persistent prescription opioid analgesic use among people without cancer in Australia. Br J Clin Pharmacol

• A Pellicano, Olivia & Tong, Erica & Yip, Gary & Monk, Louise & Loh, Xiang & Ananda-Rajah, Michelle & Dooley, Michael. (2018). Geriatric Psychotropic Stewardship Team to de-escalate inappropriate psychotropic medications in general medicine inpatients: An evaluation. Australasian Journal on Ageing.

• Tong, E. Y., Mitra, B. , Roman, C. P., Yip, G. , Olding, S. , Joyce, C. , Galbraith, K. and Dooley, M. J. (2018), Improving influenza vaccination among hospitalised patients in General Medicine and Emergency Short Stay units – a pharmacist‐led approach. J Pharm Pract Res.

SHPA continues its focus on research with the National Translational Research Collaborative (NTRC), which in 2017 sponsored a member through its grants system to scope out opioid stewardship within Australia. The NTRC is currently reviewing its grants and awards strategy and has secured more funding than ever before to stimulate research within hospital pharmacy. The revival of Advancing Practice highlights the importance of research and the value it has in developing individuals and the profession. Remember to consider what activity you are doing in your areas and to develop them into Quality Improvement or research activities.

The SHPA WA branch will be hosting its annual Research Symposium in 2018, but unlike in previous years with the event held in November, we will be bringing the event forward to the middle of the year in 2018. Start considering what research you have been involved in and keep your eyes open for the upcoming call for abstracts that will be coming to you soon. This years even will be even bigger than before but will still be a great place to showcase and develop research ideas, projects and the research culture here in WA.

“Hospital Pharmacy Internships in WA. What’s involved and how to apply” was held on the 27th March of 2018 at Fiona Stanley Hospital. This event focused on providing an insight into the role of hospital pharmacists, and information on successfully becom-ing a hospital pharmacist intern.

Kerry Fitzsimons, chairperson of SHPA WA Branch Committee and Medication Safety Pharmacist at Fiona Stanley Hospital, was the first speaker of the evening. Kerry shared some useful tips to as-sist with writing the cover letter, resume and statement address-ing the selection criteria when applying for a hospital internship. Students were also made aware of some common errors in the internship application and interview, and how these can be avoided.

We were also lucky enough to learn about rural hospital intern-ships from WACHS Regional Chief Pharmacist Meeghan Clay, who spoke about the varied opportunities and roles of rural pharma-cists and how this experience differs from working in the city.

Nikki Tadros, Director of Pharmacy at Epic Pharmacy Murdoch, shared her knowledge regarding pharmacy internships within the private hospital sector and inspired students to look outside the box in their future endeavours.

It was also very helpful to hear from Andrew Campbell, an early career pharmacist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, who offered his perspectives as someone who had recently completed this hospital internship interview process as a student from Curtin University.

Overall, this was a very helpful and informative evening, and students who attended were very grateful to have gained a better understanding of the hospital application process, and what it means to be a hospital pharmacist.

In March, SHPA WA hosted an educational event covering the highly relevant topic of Lab Monitoring. The evening helped par-ticipants to improve their understanding of common laboratory tests and how they are applied in practice.

Local expert, Yan Ghee Peng, Senior Pharmacist and Surgical Lead at Fiona Stanley Hospital, shared his extensive pharmacy experience with participants with an informative presentation. Topics such as electrolyte and urea abnormalities were covered, including their potential drug causes, management and monitor-ing. This was followed by a challenging refeeding syndrome case study where participants applied their knowledge and shared ideas with fellow pharmacists.

A second case study was presented by David Lui, Senior Phar-macist specialising in cardiology at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH). Mr Lui’s case involved a patient with severe sepsis, renal failure and rhabdomyolysis which necessitated several changes to the patient’s medication profile to prevent medicine related harm.

The third and final case was delivered by Natalia Popowicz, Senior Pharmacist specialising in Respiratory medicine at SCGH. This case involved a patient who presented with nausea, headache, leth-argy and dehydration. Laboratory investigations demonstrated that the patient had hyponatremia, the cause of which was mul-tifaceted and required careful review of the patient’s medication profile to decipher.

This event was well received by participants and provided essen-tial knowledge that can be applied to everyday practice as a hos-pital pharmacist. For example, I found the workshop very useful and have a better understanding of how to manage the different types of hyponatraemia.
