HAWAII YACHT CLUB BULLETIN

MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE

Aloha Hawaii Yacht Club Members,

As we approach the end of the first quarter of 2018, we can take a look at some of the club’s accomplishments and look forward toward our future objectives. To date, we have secured a top notch Galley; expanded funding for our Junior Sailing Program; revamped publication of the Bulletin to save money (without compromising quality); repaired the sewer; begun repairs to the seawall; held our first Open House recruiting new members; expanded Thursday night activities to include Beer Tastings, Ladies Night Out, and Trivia Night; attracted a nearly record attendance of 135 youth at the Junior Fishing Tournament; conducted well-attended Kokohead and Pokai Sail Races and hosted a wedding showcase for A-list wedding planners. Going forward, we are planning for a Beer Festival this summer and enhancing security at the clubhouse.

The Board of Governors is very focused on getting the club’s financial affairs in order. A critical step toward this was to secure an innovative galley concessionaire, thereby bringing much needed vitality and revenue into the club. We are working strategically to balance the budget by looking at new approaches to ongoing expenses, such as: setting up a special fund to close the deficit for the Junior Sailing Program; reimagining the cleaning of the clubhouse; placing a limit to the number of senior/lifetime members; adjusting the budget for live music; evaluating member discounts at the bar compared with happy hours; adding classified ads for members to the Bulletin and starting a new wedding party program with the help of our new galley. We also retired the cash card due to compatibility problems with calculating credit for member minimum spend. This is all part of a multi-pronged plan to enhance the club’s financial standing.

The HYC Membership and Marketing Committee has already held our first Open House Membership Drive and we will be continuing these drives each quarter. This quarter we offered zero initiation fees until the end of March. The future membership drives will focus on using the Open House format to introduce interested parties to the facilities, the members and the benefits of membership. As always, we depend on our members to introduce and encourage new members to join. The more members we have, the more fun we have and we will be better off financially as well.

All of this activity is the result of the efforts of many volunteers. For one, I would like to introduce our new Rear Commodore of Sail, Ron Uryga, who has generously volunteered to spearhead our outstanding sailing program. He is an excellent sailor and an experienced and dedicated Race Committee Volunteer. If you would like to get more involved in our sailing program, please contact Ron to help out. The Ships Store is benefiting from Catherine Howell’s cheerful assistance. Please consider lending a hand so store hours can expand, which will also increase club revenue.

We are still in need of a volunteer to take the position of Rear Commodore of Power. We have some fun fishing events that need a point person. Thanks to Board member J. B. Bransford, we are moving forward with our schedule, but it would be more effective with this important position filled. Please let me know if you are interested.

With George Berman and Tuuli Suomala leaving the island to pilot a land yacht on the continental United States, we are lacking a volunteer to take the minutes of our meetings as Tuuli generously did. This is a great way for a member to see the club leadership in action. I would very much love to hear from you if this is something you want to do.

HAWAII YACHT CLUB BULLETIN

MEMBERSHIP AND MARKETINGAloha Members!

I apologize for the e-blasts not getting out in a timely manner! I was under the weather this past month, which left me unable to do much for about a week. I am going full bore now though and am as busy as ever, so I am grateful that Hayley Felten has volunteered to help me put the Bulletin together before it goes to Carolyn Majewski for final preparation. Thank you, Hayley and Carolyn! It truly takes a village...

We have been throwing around ideas on what we can offer at the club as fun things to do. If you don’t already know, there are a few things I have started to host at the club which a lot of members really seem to enjoy. These events are self-funded by donations/fees and bring in money for our club. You don’t want to miss out on these fun times! Thank you to Joanne Weldon and my partner Craig Wicke for helping make this possible! I couldn’t do it alone! If anyone else would like to help run these events please do contact me!

Our fun Thursday night events are as follows:

• Trivia Night! By popular demand, this will now be twice a month, on the first and second Thursdays of the month. We use the big screen in the Upper Galley Bar and the questions cover a wide expanse of knowledge. Get your thinking caps on and find team mates to join in the fun! We offer a prize for the winning team or person (solo participants are always welcome).

• Girls Night Out! This is a chance for us girls to get together and have some fun every second Thursday of the month! We offer $1 off drinks and pupus for everyone, with an extra 20% off for members. Guys are also welcome!

• Wine Tasting! This popular event is held on the third Thursday of the month. Joanne Weldon offers a great selection of wine as well as treats on these evenings.

• Craft Brew Tasting Night! Come on the fourth Thursday of the month to taste unlimited samples of beers from local craft brewers for $15 (until the beer runs out!), plus pupus and 3 entries to a raffle for brewery swag! I want to say a big Mahalo to Honolulu Beerworks, Waikiki Brewing Company and Aloha Beer Company for all that they have done to contribute to the success of these nights. This event is a lot of fun and is sure to get even more popular as time goes on! We are looking forward to Lanikai Brewery joining us in April!

We are working on ideas for other fun events...

Over this coming month, I will be creating a new and improved website for the yacht club. Our website has needed a facelift for quite a while! We want to make it mobile friendly as well as giving it a new and improved look; it will be more user friendly and things will be easier to find. Expect a lag time for a couple of days while we switch things over, but rest assured I will let everyone know when that’s about to happen.

I appreciate everyone’s patience as I try to keep up with the demanding schedule I have running both HYC Marketing and Membership committees as well as working full time. Nikki has taken a back seat from membership chair for a while to pursue her Master’s Degree, so I have been taking on her role too. This is proving to be a steep learning curve for me! I apologize to anyone who has been overlooked or has not been followed up on regarding membership issues. I am just trying to keep swimming!

See you at the club!

VICE COMMODORE

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.

“— Mahatma Gandhi

Aloha HYC members and friends!

This update will be short as I have been inundated with work at my full-time job and I have not been able to get my thoughts together to write at length.

Nevertheless, I would like to remind all of you of my goal of getting a Defibrillator for the club, which I am committed to making happen. I have a sign-in sheet on the Vice Commodore notice board downstairs. Please join me in pledging toward this goal!

As requested by some members, I am trying out DJs on a Friday night to see whether we can attract the younger members to come upstairs and have fun, while also trimming some costs on the entertainment front!

I can’t help but say how thrilled I am (as are many other members) with our new Galley! With ‘summer’ in the horizon, I can’t help but be excited about what we can do to make the club the most exciting place in the Ala Wai. Let’s achieve this together!

Hawaii Yacht Club Ships Store Update

The Ships Store is under new management! Patti Naiyoke is the new chair of the Ships Store committee and Katie Howell is the new acting manager. As usual, JoJo will make sure that the Ships Store is open to potential customers during office hours. Katie is already manning the Ships Store on Friday evenings from 6-8 p.m.

In addition to office hours and Friday evenings, we would love to see the Ships Store open on Monday evenings 6-8 p.m., Sunday mornings 9-12 a.m. and Saturday evenings 6-8 p.m. Volunteers are needed to fill these shifts and we welcome male/female regular members, companions of regular members and social members. We will provide you with training in using the cash register, stocking the store and taking inventory. Call Katie or Patti to sign up! As soon as we have firm schedules from volunteers, we will advertise our new opening hours.

We also welcome volunteers to join our Ships Store committee! Committee members select items for purchase, assist in our monthly inventory, and fill-in hours/shifts when needed.

All the help we can get will be greatly appreciated!

The Ships Store is one of our profit centers. Let’s make it great again!

Smooth Sailing!

Aloha Cruisers,

We had a terrific turnout for our Presentation & Potluck gathering on March 6th with many announcements, guests, and exciting tales of recent cruising voyages.

Many thanks to our presenters for the evening Kawika Warren and Bill Beadle, who shared their recent cruise to Moloka’i and Maui aboard Boy Luetje’s Beneteau 40 Glory Days. They saw whales and turtles, caught some Aku, and took many beautiful pictures along the way. Due to lack of wind most of the time, they had to motor sail most of the way. All in all, it was an enjoyable voyage and ended by returning to the Hawaii Yacht Club during the exciting Friday night races. Mr. Luetje, by the way, is a Professor of Economics, who teaches in China and came home to Hawaii for the Chinese New Year celebration.

Jeff Naus introduced his guests, Mark 1 and Mark 2, who recently crewed for him on their cruise to Maui. We were entertained by their exciting story about Jeff’s dinghy. Stay tuned for more adventures/misadventures as Jeff will soon be a guest presenter. A warm welcome was extended to Rob, a solo sailor who recently arrived from Polynesia. Rob will certainly have some interesting stories to share with us.

Tom Gebhardt was happy to report that he went out on Giant Turtle to Keehi Lagoon in March for a day sail. The weather has sure been a factor for getting on the water this year, so it is good to hear that there is more sailing activity gearing up now.

Congratulations to James Purvis who announced his retirement on February 28th from his civilian job for the Air Force. He is looking forward to spending more time on the water and working on the ‘Honey Do’ list from his wife (me!).

Mark your calendars for our next Potluck and Presentation on Tuesday April 3, 2018 at 6:30 p.m., downstairs at HYC. Please come and bring a potluck dish to share. We look forward to hearing from Bill Taylor regarding the Blessing of the Jr. Sailing Fleet held at the end of March.

Our Sunday Brunches are back! We welcome you to join us the third Sunday of each month at the Galley by the Sea restaurant. Our next brunch is scheduled for April 15, 2018, at 9:30 a.m. The breakfast menu is excellent and “onolicious”!

Until next time, Happy Cruising! Marybeth Purvis

HAWAII YACHT CLUB BULLETIN

Aloha fellow yacht club members,

We had a race-filled month of March. We had originally scheduled the annual spring Pokai Race for Saturday, March 17, but due to light wind, we postponed the race to the next day. Mahalo to Craig Wicke who volunteered to man the mark boat near Iroquois Beach. The results of the race were as follows: Wasabi won the X fleet; Kahuna won the A fleet; Whisper (under club member Steve Stock) won the B fleet and Mayhem, with our Steve Eder as skipper, won the downwind portion, being the first boat to round the mark.

We held our annual Rabbit Island Race on Saturday, March 31. After a prediction of light air again, the race was started in a surprising 12 knots of wind, followed by a thunderstorm after the fleet rounded Diamond Head bouy. The winners were the same as the Pokai race: Wasabi (X fleet); Kahuna (A fleet) and our own Whisper (B fleet).

Our next club race is the Mesick in July. Steve Eder and the crew of Mayhem are representing HYC in the upcoming Lipton Cup - please wish them luck!

Aloha,

Thanks to Kawika Warren for letting the sailing program borrow his dinghy for our high school classes! It kept the Sacred Hearts sailors safe during the afternoon practices.

We picked up 2 new Open Bic sailboats from a shipment of 29 boats to Hawaii. The Magic Island Sailing Foundation donated one of these and the other came from a boat sale by HYC. That brings the total Bic fleet at HYC to 8, which will be great for the sailors.

We begin our Interscholastic League of Honolulu Sailing Regattas on Wednesday April 4. Races will be held in the harbor on Monday/Wednesday afternoons and in the ocean on Tuesdays/Thursdays through the month of April.

One of HYC’s sailors, Addie Ruiz, is competing in the Laser Midwinters West Regatta in Santa Barbara, before travelling to the Gulf Coast for another laser race. She has also been accepted to attend the California International Sailing Association Clinic in Long Beach in April. We wish her well in all of her events!

Searching for a Lost Sailor Five adventurers take on a mission to Hawaii’s remote northern islands to find a missing solo sailor. By Ronnie Simpson  January 31, 2018

Do you see him?” I asked. “Nope. Only birds and rocks,” Tyler replied, his eyes still glued to the back-side of the binoculars. “Blast the horn again,” he said.

Inhaling deeply, I blew on the orange safety horn as loudly as possible, as if I could will the missing sailor to appear from the nearly vertical guano-covered rocks before us. Despite my best efforts, Guo Chuan did not appear; the horn blast only further excited the brown boobies and storm petrels who looked down on our 46-foot racing sailboat with curiosity.
