the area businesses. My goals for 2016 are many but I'm realistic enough to recognize we must concentrate on a few items and make certain we accomplish what is truly important to make our Chamber better. With the recent departure of Scott Harper, my immediate goal has become finding a suitable replacement. Our search committee is hard at work and we hope to have the new Chamber President on board by early March!
We also were able to move forward and pursue some of the other goals defined in the Strategic Plan. These goals (below) were approved by the Board and we’ll work hard in pursuing them:
1)Increase Membership Revenue 2)Increase Membership Retention3)Create Three Area Councils for our Service Area to Help with the Voice of Business Initiative 4)Research / Create / Seek Approval / and Implement a 501 (c) 3 Charitable Foundation
One very important goal is to promote the work in the area. To that effect, the Chamber, in a joint venture with the Greater Conroe Economic Development Council, is discussing the possibility to commission a third party study on workforce needs for Montgomery County. Our thinking isthe output of that research would go into a program of work sponsored by the chambers to get the business and educational community together to develop a plan of attack.
Finally, in mid-January, we honored Dr. Don Stockton’s year as chairman of the board. Under his leadership, the Chamber obtained US Chamber of Commerce accreditation which makes us one of only 215 accredited institutions in the nation. Thanks for your never-ending support!
As you can see, we have some great goals and are positioning ourselves to be ahead of the growth that is coming our way, but maintaining the strong relationships we have now.
What a great time to be part of Conroe!
Sincerely,Hector Forestier, City of Willis ManagerChairman of the Board
Once again, allow me to say it is indeed an honor and a privilege to be the Chairman of our Chamber. If I could only use
one word to describe the Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce work year 2015, that world would be “Amazing!!!" So many great things have occurred in past year and will continue to happen in 2016 in “Conroe USA”. We have a great Chamber staff and they are doing an excellent job of running the Chamber and continue providing excellent services to

Making a Difference a nonprofit highlight
Conroe Art League is a nonprofit organization of vibrant artists and art lovers. The art league was started in Conroe 53 years ago by seven local artists. There are now 260 members. The league holds monthly general meetings at the Gallery at the Madeley Building, 127 Simonton, Conroe, Texas. Visiting artists, as well as, member artists provide a free art demonstration with 30-50 members and guests attending.
Art education is a top priority for CAL. Six artists are teaching on-going classes in the gallery in many mediums including jewelry making and pottery. Our workshops and classes have increased with many new art education opportunities. There is something for everyone at every level of skill or interest.
Every month artists come together to exhibit a new show. This takes place at the beginning of the month and the “Meet the Artist” receptions are usually the first Saturday evening after the show is open. The receptions always include complimentary wine, appetizers and lots
of friendly artists eager to show off their latest creations. In addition to the Gallery show the art league holds a Spring and Fall competition at the First Baptist Church of Conroe. The winners of these shows go on to compete in the Lone Star Art Guild Convention comprising of 22 other art groups from around Texas.
In addition to being extremely talented and friendly, CAL artists spend a lot of time working at the Galley and on
community outreach programs. CAL is very fortunate to have the use of the Gallery at the Madeley Building on Simonton as a place to display their art work. These energetic volunteers man the gallery 7 to 9 hours a day 5 days a week. It is a beautiful 103 year old building and the New Orleans style court yard is treasured by all who stop by.
CAL has been a volunteer partner to the Woodlands Waterway Art Festival for the past five years and contributes 275 hours. Working with nationally know artists has helped put Conroe Art League and the Gallery on the map.
Other outreach programs include:Art and nutrition program for at risk children, art donations to the Women’s shelter, Salvation Army, the Conroe Symphony, and Hauke Alternative School. CAL host Young Texas Artist reception, MCPAS fundraising event in the gallery, Covenant Christian School Art Show, Montgomery Middle School art show, Chalk Up Conroe and an emerging partnership with CASA Child Advocates to provide art experiences for children served by that organization. Volunteers have been teaching art classes to children in the Gallery every summer for four years. CAL has hosted a Montgomery County High School Senior art student competition and has awarded cash prizes for many years to these amazing young artists.
Upcoming events include:‘2016 Conroe Art League Invitational Show’ Feb. 3-27.224 entries of original fine art came in from all across the United States and 51 were chosen to be displayed in this exhibit. The reception will be Feb 6 at 5pm. March 1 through April 1 will be a themed show based on the play “Dust Bowl Motel” which will be playing at the Crighton Theatre at that time. The reception is Mar 18 at 5pm.
Conroe Art League is a 501(c)3 organization, 100% volunteers and is funded solely by grants, fundraisers and donations. If you or your organization would like to donate and help
“Keep Art Alive in Montgomery County” please contact CAL. The donation of your time as a docent volunteer at the Gallery is always appreciated. Visit www.conroeartleague.com or email Kerry Conkling at [email protected].

David and BJ Boothe have been appointed as the Grand Marshalls for the 51st Annual Go Texan Parade. The Go Texan Parade, led by Grand Marshalls Boothe takes place Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1 pm. This is sponsored by The Conroe/ Willis/The Woodlands Metro Go Texan Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and
Rodeo ™, as well as, the Conroe/ Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce.
David Boothe became involved with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo ™ more than 30 years ago when friends asked him to join the International Committee. Boothe honored that suggestion and went on to serve on several other committees, including Calf Scramble Donors, Rodeo Merchandise, Speakers and Wine.
Booth, a Lifetime Vice President, served as officer in charge of the Agricultural Mechanics, Informational Services, Lamb and Goat Auction and Western Art committees.
“The most enjoyable part about serving as vice president of the Show was having the opportunity to travel to all the different colleges and meeting the scholarship recipients,” Boothe said.
Reflecting on his time as vice president, Boothe said he will always remember the friendships he made and how hard the committee volunteers worked.
“It has been amazing! The relationships that have developed over time between the officers I’ve served with,” Boothe said.
Boothe continues to serve on the International Committee with his wife, BJ, and daughter, DeeAnne Navarre. His son, Greg, is on the Equipment Acquisition Committee

Each year Crisis Assistance Center (CAC) serves thousands of county residents whose health and well-being are threatened by unexpected circumstances and need. We recognize these are our neighbors who are facing temporary financial crisis, and we make every effort to provide solid, practical solutions
through rental assistance, utility assistance, food, clothing, and most importantly a compassionate word of HOPE. As a lead agency in providing basic crisis needs assistance in Montgomery County, we have developed a strong collaboration of sister agencies and community partners to coordinate the access and delivery of resources to our clients.
We are very committed to a new program, Hand Up, which captures our vision forward. Clients motivated to make positive changes, and willing to engage in a coordinated, comprehensive plan can achieve their fullest potential. Effective case managers help clients “manage” their situation as part of a process in which both work move the family forward, permanently out of poverty. The cycle can be broken if it is truly and purposefully broken.
Hand Up involves a new level of engagement with faithful community partners to fight against hunger, homelessness, poverty, lack of education or job training, health and wellness. The goals of the program remain firm: •Change the impact CAC is able to have on the lives of low income households in the community•Create networking with other organizations that share a similar vision •Offer comprehensive programs and services•Eliminate barriers to self-sufficiency for our clients
With Hand Up, CAC is positioned to help more families engage in a longer-term, sustainable manner, and to continue as “A Source of HOPE in Times of Crisis.”
While we continue to serve 500-800 clients each month
with basic crisis needs (food, clothing, rental and utility assistance), our vision and bright light we are carrying forward is Hand Up. The Hand Up Initiative partners with eligible clients to achieve self-sufficiency through job training, financial management and comprehensive case management. Our goal is to help clients with a Hand Up in life to sustain a better quality of living long term.
Meet Drew, he has been in the Hands Up program since 2014. He was homeless and had a heart condition that required open heart surgery and he is deaf. He needed safe and affordable housing near the hospital. Drew has trouble communicating so he would easily get passed around from agency to agency and fall through the cracks. After 46 hours of case
management, eight hours of nutrition classes, eight hours of success counseling and five hours at Workforce Solutions he has now completed 80% of his goals. He no longer feels he is being passed around and he has never left CAC discouraged. Thanks to our community partners Woodforest National Bank, Workforce Solutions, Conroe ISD, Entergy, Lone Star College -Conroe Center, United Way and First United Methodist Church Conroe. If you are looking for an opportunity to serve or donate, please consider our cause. We could greatly use your time, talent or treasure to help transform more lives in Montgomery County. Please visit www.cac-mctx.org for more information or contact Heather Moseman directly at [email protected].

Next Generation Leadership's Law Enforcement Sessionby Candice Dolley
Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon came to talk to the seniors at the Next Generation Leadership meeting on law enforcement. Ligon has served in law enforcement his entire life. He started as an intern with the Brazos County District Attorney's Office, then became a jailer in the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, County Staff Counsel for the Houston Police Officers' Union and now the D.A. for Montgomery County. He shared that Montgomery County was the seventh fastest growing county in the United States, which means opportunity for many, but new challenges for law enforcement.
District Attorney Ligon shared interesting facts about his work in Montgomery County. First, there are 27 police agencies that work together. All take their inmates to one main jail. While murder rates in the county are low with ten to 15 per year, alcohol
and car crashes are the main cause of preventable teenage deaths. Ligon talked about how poverty, rate of pay, spiritual void, education, opportunity/environment, population, and mental illness can spur crime rates.
Ligon has been helping our county lose the title of Deadliest Roadways in Texas by focusing on driving while intoxicated charges. His office put into effect no refusal weekends in order to help stop DWIs. He also has started the D.A.R.T., which is the District Attorney's Response Team. This dispatches a team of prosecutors and the D.A. Investigators to the scene of homicides and traffic fatalities involving alcohol, drugs, or excessive speed. These are a few of his focus areas to keep Montgomery County residents safe.
After our guest speaker Ligon, Chad Patterson offered a YouthMax training to help us develop our leadership skills.
His lesson had to do with failure. He said people should consider failure as an opportunity. First, everyone fails, so you are not alone. Secondly, if you do fail, do not be afraid to get up and try again. Everyone has
read The Little Engine That Could at least once. It is a good example about how you cannot stop after the first try. Last but not least, you can learn from your failure. Patterson suggested, "Fall toward, not away from your goal." Meaning that if you fall, get up and take another step in the right direction. Failure is a learning opportunity for us to grow.

Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Montgomery County completed a three-month pet food drive on Dec. 31, resulting in more than 1 TON (2,300 pounds) of food donated to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter.
Mr. Rooter Plumbing began hosting a promotion to their customers on Oct. 1, 2015, in which the technicians would offer a $50 discount off services in exchange for one bag or six cans of dog or cat food. President Roger Goertz and Executive Vice President Natalie Saikowski-Goertz, were inspired by their rescued boxer named Jiggles “Jiggs” to begin this promotion. Although Jiggs crossed the Rainbow Bridge last June, her legacy will continue to live on.
“Mr. Rooter Plumbing began hosting the bi-annual food drive Spring 2014 because we want to help raise awareness in our community for our local animal shelters and animal rescue in general. In addition, our objective is to assist our local animal shelters with their food shortage due to the high resident

capacity. This is the fourth food drive we have hosted and are honored to be able to provide such a significant impact on the shelters,” stated Natalie Saikowski-Goertz, executive vice president of Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Montgomery County.
The total collection after four food drives has yielded approximately seven tons of dog and cat food donations (one ton = 2,000 pounds). The most recent drive collected 545 cans and 129 bags of dog food as well as 292 cans and 42 bags of cat food. Saikowski-Goertz, who has been active in animal rescue for 14 years,
says she hopes to increase awareness in our community that the shelter is an excellent source for adoption.
“Our local shelters have an abundance of animals and people are typically able to find the breed they are seeking. Jiggs and our current boxer, Gretta, both lived a portion of their lives in a shelter, so I would encourage others to find their next family pet there,” stated Saikowski-Goertz.
The collected dog and cat food was delivered to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter on Sunday, Jan. 10.
“We coordinate this food drive twice a year because the shelter always has a need and we intend to do our part to help fill the demand. Jiggs lived life full of purpose and passion, so we plan to continue to honor her legacy.”
For more information or to donate dog or cat food, contact Natalie Saikowski-Goertz of Mr. Rooter Plumbing at 281-364-7077 or visit your local animal shelter. To view pictures from our food delivery, visit our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/.
