ODFW Corner

Hi everyone, Did you know there are over 30 outdoor archery ranges around the state of Oregon? This past month I participated in a range clean-up at the Washington Park archery range. A previous crew had replaced the target bales, and we

were tasked with replacing wood on the target stands. The turnout was low, we had a few members from the Parks Departments, ODFW and a few archers joined us when they saw the range was closed. In 4 hours, we were able to get a lot of work done.

Most ranges schedule clean-up and set-up days throughout the year. If you shoot at a public or private range, or participate in tournaments, consider helping out at one of these events. They are usually only a couple hours long, and sometimes lunch is provided! It is the work of volunteers that make tournaments and shooting ranges possible, as ranges take a lot of maintenance. If you ever have a few hours of time to donate, any help is much appreciated at these volunteer events. No experience required, they will find something for you. As always, if you have any questions or if there is anything I can help you with let me know.

Denman Wildlife Area Hosts Their Second Tournament

Denman Wildlife Area had their second 3D archery event on Sunday, July 28th on the Denman Wildlife Area. The course consisted of 40 3D targets spread over a distance of 2 miles, which took shooters around 3 hours to complete. Target distances ranged from 10 to 70 yards, and from the size of a small grouse to a large moose. Over the course of the morning the course had 107 shooters attend the event, all of whom had very positive comments. Many of the shooters at this event did not attend the first event at the wildlife area and participants were happy for the opportunity to practice their archery skills prior to the upcoming season. Next year, Denman Wildlife Area hopes to have more events over the span of spring and early summer. The event was set up and organized with help from the local Rogue Valley OHA chapter.

Hunting Stories

Take pictures this hunting season! Then have your archers turn in their stories and/or photos during or after the 2019 hunting season. They may be included in a future edition of The ODFW Quiver. They can be stories about a successful hunt, funny incidents, or even a lesson learned. Please caption photos with archer’s name and date (location if available). These will start being shared in the ODFW Quiver starting next month.

Asked & Answered

ODFW is here to help grow your archery program in any way that we can. Please submit questions to [email protected] and they may be

Page 10: In this issue ODFW... · 2019. 12. 19. · 10/19/2019-10/20/2019 JOAD Youth Tournament – Alpine Archery and Fly November 2019 11/3/2019 Vegas Turkey Shoot – Cascadian Bowmen 11/3/2019

featured in the next issue of the ODFW Quiver. Q: Our club is growing. How do we run practice so that kids get enough coach and shooting time? A: Responses from coaches:

1. Unfortunately we had to split last year to be able to have enough room. We usually bring our new kids or those who need more help in as one group and the more advanced shooters in at a different time... it is disheartening for some of the new ones to try to shoot right off the bat with some of the ones with lots of titles and accomplishments. It’s good to mix them up sometimes and later though.

2. I coach 4 days per week M, W, F 6-8 and Sunday 1-6. The facility is available for the kids Thursday and Saturday all day to shoot as well. With so many other sports and activities we need to give them as much time as possible. I write programming each day that is written on a dry erase board for them to complete. The curriculum is a combination of scoring, drills, exercises, and games.

3. My team only practices one day a week, unfortunately. I run my practices just like a tournament. The kids come in, stretch, do warp up shots, two practice rounds, and then scoring rounds. We do keep score to track progress. We have two coaches and a few parents that help. If one of the students comes up and asks for help, we will work with him/her. We will also suggest things we see throughout. Some just want to shoot and some want to be competitive. The ones that want to be all in will come up and ask for help. This way, when they are at a competition that it's just like practice, just a different setting.

4. I have found that if you can get your experienced shooters involved with assisting the new kids, it helps. When we have that issue (great issue to have) the older/more experienced act as role models and mentors.

So maybe have practices for the new kids with the more experienced kids as assistants, under the coach’s guidance. I have noticed that the communication can be better because of the smaller age gap and seeing that it works by example. Has your club faced this same dilemma? How have you been able to handle this?

2019 NASP Coordinators Conference Recap

The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP®) coordinators conference was held August 6-7 in Salt Lake City, UT. There were 38 coordinators present including those from the US, Canada, and British Virgin Islands. The conference was held at the Easton Foundation Archery Center, and one of the activities that they provided the coordinators with was visiting the Easton Factory. The coordinators saw how arrows are made, including how they start as flat aluminum and following the process all the way through to being painted, nocked and labeled.

NASP® continues to grow, as the program has reached over 1.4 million students and is in 8,794 schools worldwide. Currently in Oregon, we have over 9,000 students participating in 78 schools. Important for NASP® Instructors:

Page 12: In this issue ODFW... · 2019. 12. 19. · 10/19/2019-10/20/2019 JOAD Youth Tournament – Alpine Archery and Fly November 2019 11/3/2019 Vegas Turkey Shoot – Cascadian Bowmen 11/3/2019

A change to BAI reporting this year is that BAI instructors must report every year and complete at least 10 hours of NASP® instruction (in-school, after-school, or competition) each year. If a report is not completed or if the BAI is not able to complete 10 hours during a calendar year, they will be removed from the BAI database until they complete a refresher course. It is important for every BAI, BAIT, and BAITS to complete their reporting for accurate representation of how the program is doing and to remain active for insurance purposes.

Academic Archers is a form of recognition that NASP® awards to archers nominated by their teachers. This past year, Oregon had over 70 archers recognized as Academic Archers out of 9,000 that participated in the program. We hope that during the 2019-2020 school year more schools and instructors will take advantage of nominating their archers and we will try to double our numbers this year. Archers do not need to participate in tournaments to be nominated, instructors can nominate by going to the NASP Tournaments website. This program is a way to recognize for their academic success in addition to or separate from their athletic success. Important for Bow Shops: A new program that will be piloted next year is called NASP NEXT. This program came to life through a desire of bow shops to be able to assist NASP® students on their archery journey. NASP® NEXT will be an opportunity for bow

shops to connect with local NASP® shooters, build friendships, and help young shooters continue the sport of archery into adulthood by creating partnerships with NASP®. More information will be seen over the coming year, if you are interested in partnering with this program please email Stephanie.
