The drop, which was not entirely unexpected, was due largely to a 2011 session bolstered by the $1.85-million sale of Quiet Now (Tiznow) from the Ned Evans Dispersal and the $700,000 sale of a weanling filly by Tapit. In contrast, yesterday=s session closed out with a high price of $540,000, realized for Hip 649, a Storm Cat half-sister to GSW and GISP Pulpit (A.P. Indy). Divine Intervention... Yesterday=s session was well underway when Hip649 strode into the arena. Easily one of the bestofferings in the catalog, Tell It (Storm CatBPreach, byMr. Prospector) led the day=s proceedings when garnering a$540,000 final bid from Blandford Bloodstock. Out of GI Frizette S. winner Preach, the 15-year-oldmare is a half-sister to Grade II winner and Grade Iplaced Pulpit (A.P. Indy) and Convent (A.P Indy), thedam of stakes winner Nunnery (Forest Wildcat). Themare is already responsible for a stakes winner in theform of Dream Nettie (Dixie Union). She sold in foal toCandy Ride (Arg). AShe is a daughter of Preach, and we don=t sell verymany from that family,@ explained Bradley Purcell.APreach has had several daughters and their daughtershave had daughters as well, so we have plenty offemales from that family. She is 15, so it was either timeto sell her while we could get something for her, or livewith her. We got a couple of daughters out of her wereally liked, so we felt it was a good time to sell.@ Despite the top pedigree, Purcell admitted he washappily surprised with the final price. AWe thought she could bring a couple hundredthousand, but we never dreamed she would bring$540,000,@ admitted Purcell. AWe don=t sell out ofPreach, her daughters especially, so this is one of heronly daughters that have ever gone on the market. Youdon=t get too many opportunities to buy a half-sister toPulpit.@

Claiborne offers 25 at the November sale. Duringyesterday=s session, the farm sold seven of nine head. A[The market] has been very fair,@ Purcell said. AWhenwe bring horses to auction, we bring them to sell, sowe don=t hang huge reserves on them. We give themsomething to get the auctioneers started, and themarket fills out from there.@ As for some of the generous prices observed over theearly part of the week, Purcell added, ASomething thathas a little life to it and that somebody wants, there areplenty of people to buy. If a mare is exposed, thennobody wants it. If there is some use to them, there arepeople to buy them.@BC Bossinakis

Stonestreet Lands Emcee Half for $525,000 Stonestreet Stable=s Barbara Banke was still on handat Keeneland November yesterday and was still makingher presence felt. She acquired two more mares, including a stakes-winning SmartStrike half-sister to this year=s GIForego S. hero Emcee(Unbridled=s Song) who went for$525,000. The 6-year-old mare,Spring Party, was sold by TaylorMade Sales as hip 620 and iscarrying her first foal, a three-parts sibling to Emcee byUnbridled=s Song. Her price wasthe second-highest paid for ahorse yesterday at the Novembersale. AShe=s a nice young mare, infoal to a good sire, and [SmartStrike] is such a good broodmaresire,@ said Banke=s bloodstockadvisor John Moynihan. AThere are a couple of thosesires that we=re looking for, like Arch and Smart Strikeand Unbridled=s Song. Daughters of those sires alwaysmake nice additions to your broodmare band.@ Spring Party was produced by Surf Club (OceanCrest), a half-sister to GISW Awesome Humor(Distorted Humor), and is herself a half to a pair ofstakes horses by Distorted Humor, Baffled and Surfer,in addition to the GI BC Dirt Mile favorite Emcee. SpringParty was claimed by Jerry Jamgotchian for $25,000 atKeeneland in 2010. In March of 2011, she proved thata wise investment when she won the Wintergreen S. atTurfway Park. She was retired last January and, afterbeing sold privately to an unnamed client of TaylorMade=s, was put in foal to Unbridled=s Song. AShe=s a beautiful mare from a really active family, and she=s in foal to the right horse,@ said Taylor Made=sMark Taylor. AHer dam has a Distorted Humor, a HardSpun and a Medaglia d=Oro in the pipeline, and the 2-year-old [White Waves, by Any Given Saturday] iswith Andre Fabre in France and placed twice inOctober.@ Stonestreet, of course, has another nice daughter ofSmart Strike who will eventually make it into theirbroodmare band: the brilliant champion My MissAurelia. That one lost her unbeaten record but none ofher good reputation after a game runner-upperformance in the GI Breeders= Cup Ladies= Classic lastweek. Moynihan confirmed the filly will race on at four.AShe came out of the race great,@ he said. -LucasMarquardt

Storm Watch... The excitement lasted until the very last hip throughthe ring Wednesday night at Keeneland as hip 806, byStorm Cat out of Profit Column (Private Account), drewa $475,000 final bid from agent Ben Glass. SecuringEyeofthehurricaneBin foal to Smart Strike--on behalf ofGary and Mary West, Glass indicated that the mare=syearling by Bernardini, purchased by Glass for$250,000 at Keeneland in September, was one of themain reasons for yesterday=s purchase. According toGlass, the Bernardini colt is currently with Jeff Kirk atthe Nelson Kirk Training Center in Ocala. AShe has a beautiful pedigree and we have theyearling, which we love,@ said Glass. AWe really likedeverything about her.@ Out of Profit Column, the Grade III winner is a full-sister to graded stakes winner and Grade I placed FinalRound. Profit Column, a $1.6-million KEENOV purchasein 2004, drew $1.25 at Fasig-Tipton November in2006. The 8-year-old Eyeofthehurricane, a $290,000FTKNOV purchase in 2008, is the granddaughter ofgroup winner Ballet de France (Northern Dancer), alsoresponsible for champion and multiple Group 1 winnerMuhtarram (Alleged). AWe don=t keep a lot of mares,@ said Glass. AWe=ll buyone or two mares, if we see a good one.@ As for the overall market at Keeneland over the pastthree days, Glass commented, AOn a couple, I thought Iwould have to go more and on a couple, I didn=t have togo that high. When the right one comes in, the moneyis good. But I think there were some bargains here.@

Neck ‘N Neck’s Dam Brings $350,000 Trainer Ian Wilkes, still Afloating around@ after winningSaturday=s GI Breeders= Cup Classic with JanisWhitham=s homebred Fort Larned (E Dubai), was onhand at Keeneland yesterday representing the interestsof another client. Wilkes watched as A. Stevens Miles,Jr.=s homebred broodmare Bootery (Storm Boot), damof the up-and-coming sophomore Neck >N Neck (FlowerAlley), sold to Hunter Valley Farm for $350,000. Thatwas the fourth-highest price of the session. The 9-year-old mare, in foal to Warrior=s Reward, was consigned byThree Chimneys as hip 738. Wilkes, of course, trains Neck >N Neck, who in thelast few weeks has doubled up wins in the GII Indiana Derby Oct. 6 and GIII Ack Ack S. at Churchill Nov. 2.Both he and Miles have a long history with the family. Miles purchased Bootery=s second dam Magic Way(Runaway Groom) at the 1997 Keeneland SeptemberYearling Sale and raced her with Hall of Fame trainerCarl Nafzger, Wilkes=s longtime boss and mentor. MagicWay earned nearly $125,000 on the track, and whileshe didn=t win a stakes, she was beaten just a nosewhen third in the Audubon Oaks at Ellis Park in 1998. Wilkes had taken the reins from Nafzger by the timeBootery came around, and she proved similar in herability to her dam Magic Way, banking over $110,000before being retired and bred to Flower Alley. ASteve isn=t really into breeding and had wanted tosell the mare, but I said that it would be better to breedher and see if we can get her to produce somethingbefore selling,@ explained Wilkes. It was a strategy that worked to perfection when thatinitial mating produced Neck >N Neck, who has wonthree of his last five, including Churchill=s GIII MattWinn S. in May, and earned $676,856. Neck >N Neck=s appreciation of Churchill=s track hasto leave him as one of the favorites for the GI Clark H.Nov. 23, which according to Wilkes is his next target.AIf he=s able to win that, that mare will be worth everybit of that and then some,@ he said. Wilkes also provided an update on Fort Larned. Notsurprisingly, the Classic winner is going to get a break, but, as previously announced, will return to racing in2013. "He came out of the race well,@ said Wilkes.AHe'll go down to Florida at the end of the month. We'llgive him a break, I'll watch him and we'll see what wewant to do.@ -Lucas Marquardt

Dell Ridge Adds to Quality Roster... After picking up a couple of choice offerings atKeeneland Wednesday, Dell Ridge returned to addanother to its broodmare band when securing Hip 528,the 3-year-old filly Onza (Empire Maker) for $325,000.In foal to Arch, the unraced bay is out of SP Chili Cat(Storm Cat), a half-sister to the ill-fated GI Alabama S.and GI Gazelle S. heroine Pine Island (Arch) and GISWPoint of Entry (Dynaformer), runner-up in his latest startin the Nov. 3 GI Breeders= Cup Turf. Consigned byMiddlebrook Farm, the bay hails from the family of GI Breeders= Cup Distaff winner Pleasant Home(Seeking the Gold), MGSW Country Hideaway (Seekingthe Gold) and Triple Tiara victress Sky Beauty (BlushingGroom {Fr}). A[Onza] is obviously a very nice mare, by EmpireMaker and in foal to Arch--a really nice young dam,@said Dell Ridge=s Des Ryan. AThere=s plenty of activity inboth families, so there=s a chance of a lot happening.Plenty of activity. I like activity.@ Some of that activity was generated one day earlierby Burning Arch (Arch), a half-sister to Onza, whobrought $440,000. Del Ridge registered a pair of purchases duringWednesday=s final session of Book 1, including theoperation=s top-priced buy, Hip 317, a full-sister to lastweekend=s GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile winner Tapizarwho realized $440,000. In foal to Tiznow, Tamoboz isfrom the family of GISW Olympio (Naskra) and GSWand GISP Call Now (Wild Again). The 6-year-old wasconsigned by Elm Tree Farm LLC. Cont. p7

AShe is a young mare, she=d already had a foal and Ijust thought she was a good buy,@ offered Ryan. AIt=s anice package, it=s a good family and the mare had a lotof quality about her. There is plenty of activity in thefemale family, so there is more chance of blacktype inthere.@ Also on Day 2, Dell Ridge went to $200,000 forDaring Reality (Include) (hip 385). Out of SW and GSPMiz Emmalou (Well Decorated), the 4-year-old racing orbroodmare prospect was a member of the ParamountSales consignment. Over the course of two days at Keeneland, DellRidge=s three purchases averaged $308,333. Whenasked about the farm=s buying strategy, Ryanexplained, AWe usually just buy at this sale, picking up acouple mares every year for Dell Ridge. We buy in the$300,000-$500,000 price range, because you don=thave far to fall. You=re always going to maybe lose a bitor break even, so it=s kind of a safe way to go.@ Ryan added, ASo we race about seven or eight, andwe have a nice broodmare band. We sell for thecommercial market, then if we like something, we=llkeep it as well. So, we split it up a little bit, but DellRidge only has about 15 of our own mares, and weboard for Gary and Mary West and other clients aswell.@ Dell Ridge carried plenty momentum into this year=sNovember sale off an auspicious weekend. LastSaturday, the operation was represented by homebredGSW Noble Tune (Unbridled=s SongBSerena=s Cat, byStorm Cat), runner-up in the GI BC Juvenile Turf;Brushed by a Star (Eddington--Brush Hour, by BroadBrush), victorious in the GII Chilukki S.; and Violence(Medaglia d=Oro--Violent Beauty, by Gone West), whotook Sunday=s GII Nashua S. Serena=s Cat, a granddaughter of champion Serena=sSong (Rahy), was purchased for $1.4 million as aweanling at Keeneland November in 2003. Noble Tuneis the first foal for the stakes-winning mare. Accordingto Ryan, Del Ridge sold her A.P. Indy yearling coltprivately. Additionally, Storming Beauty (Storm Cat),the dam of Violent Beauty, was a $1.2-million purchasefor Dell Ridge in 1999. AThose types of mares you can=t buy again,@ he said.AWhat=s that mare worth? Some of those really strongfamilies are coming back now. It might have skipped ageneration, but they=re coming back. They=re paying offfor us now.@ Dell Ridge also campaigns homebred Kid Kate (LemonDrop Kid--Run Kate Run, by Cherokee Run), a multiplestakes winner that won her latest in the Classy MirageS. at Belmont Oct. 14. Kid Kate was scheduled to runin Thursday=s Pentelis S. at Aqueduct, but missed theengagement after the race was cancelled because of astorm passing along the Eastern seaboard.BC Bossinakis

Abraham Scores With Bernardini Colt Breeder Mike Abraham purchased the mare MiningMy Business (Mining) for $100,000 at KeenelandNovember last year, and yesterday resold the foal shewas carrying, a colt by Bernardini, for $295,000. BrianGraves saw off WinStar=s Elliott Walden for thehandsome youngster, who sold from Taylor Made aship 503. AHe was a beautiful colt,@ saidAbraham. AWe couldn=t havehope for anything better as faras conformation, and he had agreat walk. He=s good-minded,had great scope and x-raysperfectly. We wouldn=t havebeen afraid to take him back andsell him as a yearling.Somebody=ll make some moneyif they=re pinhooking him.@ Graves said he will indeedsend the colt back through thering as a yearling, and admittedthe price was a little higher thanhe wanted to go. ABut I've onlybought one other one,@ Graves said, referring to theUnbridled=s Song--Miss Abita filly he landed Wednesdayfor $190,000 (hip 251). AAll the ones I like are bringingmore than I'm willing to pay. I've chased 10 up [intothe ring] and bought two, so it's been strong.@ The Las Vegas-based Abraham has a 22-memberbroodmare band, which he keeps at Jacob Nance=s IRBloodstock in Midway, Kentucky. He says he primarilybreeds for the market. Abraham is also heavily involvedin breeding and racing Quarter Horses and has a farm inBosque, New Mexico. Outside of racing, Abraham hashad success in real estate and oil and gas exploration, and also owns a cab company in New Mexico. The Bernardini colt=s 19-year-old dam Mining MyBusiness is a half-sister to dual Classic winner andchampion Real Quiet (Quiet American), and hasproduced five winners, including GII Fair Grounds Oakswinner and GI Kentucky Oaks third Real Cozzy(Cozzene). Abraham said the decision to sell wasmotivated by a set of films. AWhen we x-rayed him, everything was perfect,@ heexplained. AA lot of times, when you x-ray them as ayearling, they have this or that, so I figured, withBernardini being hot, that we=d bring him in and see. Iwas hoping for maybe a little more, but that was fine.@ Mining My Business is currently in foal to anotherDarley sire, the Danzig stallion Hard Spun. AShe=s a nicemare who doesn=t show her age, and she raises a goodbaby, as you saw,@ said Abraham. AWe=re real excitedto see what she=s going to have next year.@ -LucasMarquardt

A $420,000 Daily Double For Tucker Giles Tucker, managing director of the assetmanagement firm Blue Edge Capital, had a breedingoperation of exactly two horses coming into Thursday=sthird session at Keeneland November. Bythe end of the day, it was down to zero, and while that may sound kind of sad onthe surface, the trip to an empty barnwas a lucrative one for Tucker. In thespan of five minutes, the Richmond,Virginia-based moneyman sold the lonemare he owned, Crescent Moon (Seekingthe Gold--Wandering Star, by RedRansom), to Eclipse ThoroughbredPartners for $150,000, then watched asthe mare=s latest foal, a weanling filly by Arch, elicited abid of $270,000 from Stonestreet ThoroughbredHoldings. The $420,000-grossing pair sold as hip 767and hip 768, respectively, and were consigned by JohnMayer=s Nursery Place. Tucker has been involved in Thoroughbred breedingonly for a few years, but it=s been a profitable run. Hehad taken part in a few racing partnerships with BillFarish and Ben Haggin=s Woodford Thoroughbreds, andin 2007 he asked Haggin, a longtime friend, aboutbuying a mare or two. Haggin secured Crescent Moon,in foal to War Front, for a sensible $60,000 atKeeneland November.

It didn=t take long for Tucker to get out on his initialoutlay. The foal Crescent Moon was carrying, MarstonMoor, sold for $77,000 as a yearling at KEESEP 2009.The following year, a Langfuhr colt out of the mare, theSP Lake Victor, sold for $155,000. But the big prizecame yesterday. AThat was fantastic,@ said Haggin afterward from theback walking ring. AWe came in thinking maybe$150,000, so we=re very excited for that.@ Haggin added, AI=ve known Giles since we were 12years old--we were boarding school roommates. Hiswife Tracy is from Wade, Pennsylvania, and they=re biginto hunter/jumpers. They have a farm west ofRichmond, and so they kind of had the bug. I guesshe=s out of the breeding business for the time being, but we sure wish he gets back involved.@ Given yesterday=s effect on the balance sheet, that=sa wish that might be granted. -Lucas Marquardt

Margaux on the Move The managing partners of Margaux Farm in Kentuckyhave been busy this year. In early August, a partinterest in the farm was sold to Canadian-basedThoroughbred owners Jim andSusan Hill, with original ownersSteve and Shelley Johnson andJoseph and Lynn Fowler continuingtheir involvement. Around thesame time, construction began ona one-mile synthetic gallop, allowing the WoodfordCounty-based nursery to expandits training operations. Last month,Margaux hired 24-year-old IrishmanMichael Hardy as its new farm manager, and yesterday, during the third session of Keeneland November, theyrecorded a significant double when selling twosix-figure broodmares for longtime client Gary Barber. First through the ring was hip 530, Oui Say Oui (Ire)(Royal Applause--Mohican Princess {GB}, by ShirleyHeights {GB}). Group 2-placed as a juvenile in hernative Ireland before embarking on a Stateside career, the now 6-year-old mare was knocked down to theIrish-based Epona Bloodstock for $350,000 carrying herfirst foal, by Scat Daddy. ATo be honest, it was a lot more than we expected,@Hardy admitted. AWe knew she=d sell well, as she=dbeen pulled out over 100 times showing at the barn, but we didn=t know she=d sell that well.@

Hardy noted that it was no surprise, however, thatOui Say Oui should return to her country of birth. AAs a Royal Applause mare with a European pedigree, she was always destined to go back to Europe,@ Hardyexplained. AShe is a very good-looking mare, and shehas a pedigree that would attract the European buyers.Being in foal to Scat Daddy on an early cover also madeher quite popular, with the success he=s had here and inEurope. All the European buyers were very interested inher at the ringside.@ Barber and the team at Margaux didn=t have long torecover from the thrill of Oui Say Oui=s sale before theysent hip 627, the 3-year-old Stayclassysandiego(Rockport Harbor--Latin Lynx, by Forest Wildcat)through the ring. The stakes-placed half-sister to lastyear=s GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. winner Sean Avery(Cherokee Run), who Barber owned in partnership withTommy Town Thoroughbreds, was picked up for$120,000 by Nancy Shuford, also carrying her first foalby Scat Daddy. AGary Barber is a very good client of the farm,@ Hardysaid. AHe has some nice pedigreed horses, and he=sreally happy with his day=s work. He made almost$500,000 in an afternoon.@ Margaux has also been busy on the buyer=s end thisweek, signing the tickets for two weanling fillies onbehalf of a Pennsylvania-based client. Margaux securedhip 41, a filly by Giant=s Causeway for $100,000 duringTuesday=s opening session, and yesterday picked up aCity Zip filly, hip 587, for $27,000. Cont. p11

Hardy noted that the new owner of the two fillieswishes to raise them to race with the ultimate goal ofbuilding a broodmare band, a vision that is aligned withthe philosophies of Margaux. AThey selected Margaux as the perfect fit because wehave both breeding and training operations, so we=reable to give them everything they need under one roof,@Hardy explained. AIt=s a great service to be able to offerthat our clients don=t have to go anywhere else. We canfoal the mare and get the foal ready to go to the track, and our clients really like that.@ Hardy, who took up his position at Margaux just fourweeks ago after graduating Darley Flying Start in July, noted that the farm=s revamped training facilities havebeen thus far popular with clients. AWe=ve been very, very busy,@ he noted. AThe demandis exceeding our capacity right now, so we=re happywith the response.@ As a graduate of the Equine Science program at theUniversity of Limerick in Ireland and the Irish NationalStud course in addition to Darley Flying Start, Hardy iscertain to contribute to Margaux=s growing range ofservices. AI=ve drawn a lot on what I learned in the Flying Startand before that in college and the Irish National Stud,@Hardy said. AThings from horsemanship right through tomarketing or client relations.@ How has Kentucky=s newest farm manager adaptedto his role?

AIt=s been fantastic,@ Hardy noted. AIt=s a great placeto work, I really enjoy it. Steve Johnson has been greatto me, and we have a very great staff. It=s a really goodgroup of people working at the farm and it=s made itmuch easier for me to come here. They=re very willingand want to embrace me into the role, so it=s beengreat.@

Dell Ridge=s Des Ryan on the weanling market: AYou can find a really nice filly foal, keep it and raceit, and if you get lucky and it wins a stake or a Grade IIor Grade III, and you can put it back through the ring,as you=ve seen with these other mares. AI think in Book 1 [at Keeneland] has some really nicemares and Fasig-Tipton [November] had a hell of a sale. But I think good mares have generally been boughtprivately, have gone overseas, or else people areholding on to them, because they=re few and farbetween. I think like you saw here, there=s probably acouple dozen really top mares, but apart from that, you=re coming down to the middle market mares. There=s not as many good mares as there was before.Good mares are expensive. You=ve got a lot of thesepeople from Qatar, the Middle East and Japan buyingmares. I think good stuff is hard to find, and if youbreed or get it, hold onto it.@ AI like going back to when we bought thoseexpensive foals years ago. I was watching a couplefoals [in Book 1] that I was trying to bid on. If they wina stakes they=re worth a couple million, but maybe youcould buy them here now for $750,000 or $500,000as foals.

THE TOP DOUBLES: 6 BRING $4M+ Never has the difficulty of comparing mixed salesfrom one year to another been so vividly illustrated aswhen trying to compare the November sales this yearto last year=s. In 2011 Book 1 of the KeenelandNovember Sale grossed $114.6 million, split almost halfand half--$57-million and change each--between thetwo dispersals of Ned Evans=s Spring Hill Farm andSaud bin Khaled=s Palides Investments; and the rest ofthe book. Keeneland wisely this year providedcomparisons both with and without the two dispersals, and the comparison without the dispersals makessense, as there were 209 horses sold in Book 1 thisyear, versus 202 non-dispersal Book 1 sales in 2011. This year, the 209-strong Keeneland Book 1 horsesgrossed $61,505,000 and averaged $294,282; lastyear, 202 non-dispersal horses grossed $57,184,000,and averaged $283,089. Using that comparison, thenumber of horses sold was up 3%, the gross was up8% and the average was up by 4%; so, to that extent,Keeneland Book 1 remained essentially stable. However, there=s been a lot more going on. Fasig-Tipton staged a spectacular sale Monday night, when87 horses sold for $60,220,000, with 15 horsesbringing $1 million or more, five bringing $3 million andup, and Havre de Grace becoming only the thirdbroodmare or broodmare prospect to sell at auction for$10 million or more. Fasig=s gross nearly doubled, from$32,745,000 last year to $60,220,000 this year. Threefillies or mares sold for more than $4-million: Havre deGrace to American Mandy Pope=s Whisper Hill Farm;Untouched Talent, the dam of Bodemeister, toCoolmore=s M.V. Magnier for $5 million; and Switch($4.3 m), a 5-year-old racemare by Quiet American whoplaced three times in the GI Breeders= Cup Filly andMare Sprint, to Ireland=s Moyglare Stud. Three more mares cracked the $4-million barrier inKeeneland=s Book 1: Pure Clan ($4.5 m) topped Book 1,to Brazilian Goncalo Torrealba, but presumably to stayin Kentucky; Plum Pretty ($4.2 m) to Mandy Popeagain; and Changing Skies ($4.2 m), one of sixseven-figure purchases by France=s MandoreInternational. Between the two sales, 12 fillies or mares brought$2-million or more, with another 10 between $1and $2million. Ten different buyers signed for seven-figurefillies or mares: two Yoshida interests from Japan (theleading buyers of top-class bloodstock since the 2008crash) bought seven; three European interests boughteight; and five American interests (including Brazil)signed for seven--so roughly a third of the seven-figurefillies or mares go to Japan, a third go to Europe, andjust a third stay in the U.S.Cont. p20

Another aspect of this year=s first three days of mixedsales has been Fasig-Tipton=s impressive performance. If you add up the first three days, including dispersals, over the last two years, there have been $269,151,500in sales, of which Fasig has sold $92,965,000, or34.5%. Yet this year, Fasig sold 49.5% of thethree-day gross ($121,725,000), including 15 of the 22fillies or mares to bring $1-million or more. But, however you divide it up, the overwhelmingimpression of this year=s sales is that the price oftop-class broodmares and broodmare prospects hasessentially doubled--a combination of increased demandat the uber-top level, and a scarcity of top prospectsbeing offered. However, it is not our impression thatthese price spikes are replicated in the rest of themarket; below the $500,000 level, the general feelingis that prices are about the same as last year. It=s reallyjust the real gems which are selling for double topdollar. The first three days of selling, at Fasig Monday andKeeneland Tuesday and Wednesday, also marked thesales debuts of the first foals of a group of promisingsires whose first foals were born this year. Fourstallions went to stud in North America in 2011 forstud fees of $30,000+, and all were among thosewhich had weanlings sell at Fasig or in Book 1. Lane=sEnd=s Quality Road had six average $173,333 (of eightoffered) in those first three days, narrowly leadingAshford=s Lookin at Lucky, who had four (from sixoffered) average $172,500. Claiborne=s Blame, conqueror of Zenyatta, had six sell from six offered, averaging $148,333; while Taylor Made=s Eskendereyahad one sell (of three offered) for $70,000. Airdrie=sMajesticperfection had one sell for $105,000. WinStar=s2010 GI Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver had threeaverage $60,667; Darley=s Desert Story, now bound forNew York, had two average $60,500; whileSpendthrift=s Dynaformer horse Temple City had onesell for $60,000. Ashford=s Munnings had three average$51,333, and WinStar=s Summer Bird rounded out thetop 10, with two averaging $42,000. Just about all ofthese have a lot more weanlings scheduled to sell overthe remaining books.

Weekly Sales Ticker by Bill Oppenheim

“Fasig-Tipton’s November gross nearly doubled from last year’s, with 15 fillies or mares bringing $1m+, including five at $3m+. Keeneland’s gross shot up last year with the Ned Evans and Saud bin Khaled dispersals, but otherwise its Book 1 figures have been trending downwards as the catalogue has shrunk. Their non-dispersal Book 1 gross did rise, in single-digit increases, from last year, and they added 7 seven-figure sales, including another three at $4m+.”

Breeders’ Cup Thoughts: Just a few notes on thisyear=s edition, which was judged by most of those backat the sale to have been a big success. The number ofpeople who say, after every time it=s held at SantaAnita, that it should be in California every year, doesjust keep growing.

There were some great performances: for me, WiseDan locked up Horse of the Year in the GI Breeders=Cup Mile; Royal Delta cemented her title as championolder female; and I=ll Have Another gets champion3-year-old from his new base in Japan. They will be thethree finalists for Horse of the Year, I would havethought. There were notable doubles for breedersMichel Zerolo and Eric Puerari, who with or withoutpartners bred GI Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Flotilla andGI Filly & Mare Turf winner Zagora; and for theJuddmonte sire Mizzen Mast, sire both of Flotilla and ofSaturday=s GI Breeders= Cup Turf Sprint winner, the fillyMizdirection. Another highlight of the weekend was seeing NinaKaiser=s Zenyatta statue, which was unveiled at SantaAnita a month or so ago. It is a truly sensational pieceof art--she=s captured Zenyatta=s trademark pawing atthe ground, and Nina=s painstaking detail has producedprobably the most impressive work of horse sculptureI=ve seen since John Skeaping=s. Needless to say, it=sworth the trip. Nina=s website iswww.equinesculpture.com.
