Angeles). There will be more people and more cars to be certain. It takes a vast number ofvolunteers to make an event like this fly. I hope you are taking advantage of the extra

connections afforded by being one of these people. Speaking of volunteers, I want to acknowledge our own Barbara McCrory and Jerry Gladstone for the aboveand beyond gift of their time to co-edit der Riesenbaum over the past two years. This additional contribution isa real stretch as they have continued in their main roles as Webmaster and Treasurer for the Region. Thankyou two so very, very much. Both Jerry and Barbara are stepping out of this additional role at the end of this year. We have tried repeatedlyto enroll/engage one or more individuals/members in being mentored as Newsletter Editor over the last yearand a half. This has not been successful to date. I am writing today to ask again for volunteers to take over theshepherding of this publication. Unless someone(s) steps up in the next 4 months or so we will lose thiswonderful, informative, and entertaining Region resource. Please, please do think about giving your time andefforts in support of your Region in this valuable and necessary way. We need your help. Interested/willingparties can contact me, Barbara, Jerry, or any other Board Member. That is not the only way you as a single member can become a part of the "inner-circle" and share in thedirection and running of the Redwood Region. We will have a normal nominating committee run by the mostrecent Past President once again this year, and are actively looking for Vice-Presidential candidates now. NoMike is not leaving, but he has agreed to run for next year's Presidential spot, and most if not all other Boardmembers have agreed to serve in their current spots if asked/elected. That will leave a hole in the VP spot onthe election ticket. The VP has control over what is listed in the Region Calendar and posts Redwood eventson the National Calendar. He/She also takes over for the President in the event that the President is unable tofulfill his/her duties. Please see Mike's article below for what it is like to hold the VP position. On another note, I want to put out thanks to the members of Loma Prieta Region for another great Zone 7Concours and Swap Meet at Parts Heaven in Hayward. I had a great time and even made a little money fromthose parts that have been sitting in my garage all winter. It was nice to see Bob Schoenherr and AnitaBenzing with the Green Machine, as well as Larry and KC Sharp . I also enjoyed Rod Moore, his son, andSimone and Thorsten Kopitzky who all shared a couple of "retail-spots" on the street. Many of us have partsthat we have taken off of our car(s) and are just storing. The Swap Meet is a lot of fun, allows you to pass yourused parts to fellow enthusiasts, and lets you make a buck at the same time. You've missed it for this year, butI am sure it will be back next June. That's all for now. Down the road (in Monterey!) Vern

by Jerry Gladstone, der Riesenbaum Co-Editor Vern, in his Presidents message wrote that Barbara (McCrory) and I will be completing ourterms as co-editors of der Riesenbaum at the end of this year. We took on thisresponsibility near the end of 2012 when our previous editor, Chris Harrell, relocated toSouthern California in a career-related move. This role was supposed to be only for a fewmonths until a new editor was identified. Here we are almost two years later and no onehas come forward to lead the Region's main communications vehicle.

The vacancy of an editor for the Club's newsletter presents both opportunity and challenge. An obviousopportunity is for a Club member to step up and contribute to the Region in a very meaningful and enjoyableway. But there is an even bigger opportunity: reimagining the Region's newsletter in this era of instant internetcommunications and to provide a new format that meets the needs of today's time crunched society. Thechallenge, of course, is that without an editor(s) there will be no newsletter and poorer access to informationabout Club events and happenings. For those of you who are considering volunteering, but are afraid of just jumping in, be assured that Barbaraand I will be available to mentor and help you get started; so will the rest of the Board. Over the next fewmonths the Board will be developing ideas for new formats and also following the "newsletter" experiments ofother clubs. Barbara and I are not disappearing as we will continue to be active Board members serving asWebmaster and Treasurer, respectively. Please contact Barbara or myself even if you only want to talk about what the newsletter is, what it might be,what the editor does and how you might be involved. As you can see in this newsletter there are many events coming up, come on out and join in the fun andfriendship. Happy reading and enjoy! Jerry

On Be ing V ice Pres iden t

by Mike Hinton, Vice President, Redwood Region

The Redwood Region's Procedure Manual outlines the (many) duties of the Vice-President.It's a daunting list, to be sure. I can easily see how the breadth of responsibilities couldscare off any potential candidates. Maybe it was a good thing that I hadn't read that sectionof the RPM in detail prior to volunteering! In reality though, the job is much simpler. My two main priorities are to maintain the

Region's very active calendar, and to assist my friend Vern (your President) in carrying out his duties. Forexample, Vern has asked me to prepare Observer's Reports when he was unable to attend an event. Inaddition, I've assisted in preparing Requests for Insurance and Region Subsidies. The forms are a littleconfusing the first time through, but with Vern's help, I think I can handle them now. Maintaining the calendar is relatively painless too thanks to the huge efforts expended by Don and Barbara.Mainly I wind up being asked to approve events for the calendar. Because so much effort has been put intoplanning events, those approvals are routine. To sum it up, although the job of Vice-President is an important one with many responsibilities, I've found it tobe a pleasurable exercise. The position also allows you to get to know your fellow Board members (andregular members too) that much better. If anyone is interested, Vern and I would be happy to discuss ourexperiences with you.

    Yosemite Region's Zone 7 Concours on Campus - May 18, 2014

The 2014 Zone 7 Concours Series got underway in Stockton on May 18th. It was abeautiful day for the first concours of the season. Redwood Region was represented byBarbara and Steve McCrory and myself. Barbara and Steve drove their 944 and I drovethe 914 "Green Machine".

Anita was busy getting ready for our pending move, so I was on my own for the day and the 4:30 am starttime. The drive was pretty easy except the millions of insects that were out to destroy my well prepared car. Zone 7 Representative Paul Czopek and Concours Chair Les Schreiber greeted the cars and drivers upontheir arrival. Eleven cars were entered to compete and another eleven were there to watch. The judgingbegan in the morning, the awards were announced right after lunch. Barbara and Steve and I took 1st placeawards. It's a real bummer that the San Joaquin Delta College site doesn't garner as much interest as other concours. It's always a nice event with nice people. Thanks to the Yosemite Region for hosting a fun and lovely event. Don't forget Parade and the rest of the 2014 Zone 7 Concours series.

second concours of the season: the much anticipated LPR/PartsHeaven sponsored event. This was a bigexperiment for us as it was the first event from our new home. How long would it take to get there? Will Apple, our dog, survive her first full day without our presence? Would the Lake County gnats eat the car on our way toHayward? Thank goodness everything was cool and we had a great day catching up with everyone. We were not the only members from the Redwood Region to attend, we saw John Jackson showing his black911 and of course Anita and I showing the Green Machine. Also there to sell and buy parts were Vern Rogersand Simone and Thorsten Kopitzki. The swap meet was buzzing with activity as we drove in and as wefinished prepping the car. Judging took place in the morning and the winners were announced about 1:00 pm.We both won first place in our respective classes. There was a lot of discussion about Parade and the "big show" as some might say. Thanks to the LPR teamand PartsHeaven for hosting the concours. I think this was their 25th concours and parts swap. Always a funevent with plenty of fun Porsche people to enjoy the day.

Sacramento Valley Region Zone 7 Niello Porsche Concours - June 8, 2014

New day, new place, same result: Bob Schoenherr and I both won our respective classes at the SVR/NielloConcours in Rocklin. The temperature was predicted to be a blistering hot 104 degrees; that plus Parade in aweek kept all the Bay Area regulars at home. Turnout was low and almost all the cars fit inside the dealershipservice area. We judged the cars in the sun first before they melted. One of the cars entered is owned by aformer Redwood Region member, Rick Bradley, who joined Redwood in 1971 and moved to the Sacramentoarea in 2007.

During the awards ceremony drawings wereheld for door prizes donated by Niello Porsche. I scored in a big way winning a Porsche mug and a SPA day- not a SPA for me, for my car! My car will receive a free service from Niello, and then they will detail it. Sinceit will take them all day to do this, my loaner car will be one of their late model Porsche automobiles so I can"see why it is so commonly said 'Porsche...there is no substitute.".

The Cayman Direct from the Auction Yard Restored to Factory Specifications and Condition

    Sean's 2011 BMW M Series Turbo Diesel My 1999 911 Cabriolet

    Member S to r ies : Why I So ld My 911 Cabr io le t fo r a Cayman S

Story and Photos by Craig Steele, Redwood Region Secretary I am fairly new to Porsche sport cars having purchased my first in December 2009 -- a"Guards Red" 1999 Carrera Cabriolet. My wife and I drove that car to countless RedwoodRegion events during the last four years. In 2010, my son Sean, sold his 1996 Porsche 993and purchased a 2006 Cayman S. Every time I would visit him in La Meza I would admirethe Cayman parked in his garage. He is in the BMW-Porsche used parts business. Hepurchased the Cayman from an auto auction yard. Sean is a master at restoring BMWs

and Porsches back to factory specifications and condition.

I was pretty sure I would be driving my 911 Carrera Cab for the rest of my Porsche life. Then my son realizeda lifetime dream and found a used 2011 BMW M series turbo diesel.

He then announced that he was selling the Cayman to make room for his new BMW. I told my wife that Iwanted to buy Sean's Cayman, she said okay even though she really loves our 911. So I called Sean andasked what he wanted for the Cayman and quoted the Excellence Porsche Buyer's Guide resale price range of

$26K to $34K. He said because the Cayman has a salvage title, I can have it for what I paid for the 911Carrera in 2009. I said deal! Later, he called and said the DMV allows family member title transfers exemptfrom both sales tax and smog test. Did I mention the parental guarantee my son provides in each autotransaction with his mom, dad and sister too. I had to sell my 911 to buy the Cayman. Sean is a professional Craig's List seller and coached me through theprocess. I provided most of the copy and all the photos. He in turn booked the ad, qualified the buyers, etc. Ihad two full price offers in three days. I talked to both buyers and decided to sell the 911 to a lady from SantaCruz. Money changed hands as did the pink slip, a bill of sale and smog certificate;she then drove the carhome. On her way home her newly acquired 911 had a water pump failure. I paid for the replacement part toinsure buyer satisfaction. Next up was paying my son, going to San Diego to get the Cayman, and driving it back to Santa Rosa. OnMay 5th I headed north via the 405, US101 and the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). I had some business in SanLuis Obispo for two days, then continued north on PCH to Santa Cruz, over to San Jose, then finishing up atour Santa Rosa home. The Cayman is a lot lower than the 911 and the ride is more sporty compared to the Carrera's more touringfeel. I am discovering the advantages of mid-engine performance every time I'm behind the wheel. I am takingthe Cayman to Porsche Parade 2014 and entering the autocross. I will be going to the Zone 7 autocross inStockton to learn more about the Cayman's handling before the Monterey event. I took Sandy on a mini roadtrip and she has blessed the purchase. I have nicked named the car "Gator" and am looking forward to manyfun years of driving this spirited Porsche sports car. As a PCA member, I was able to join the Cayman Registerand get lots of good information from other Cayman owners on all things relating to 987's.

Jim Hurson (President) says . . . .June, already, and time for the "Egad, the year is half over already, where has it all gone" column. But I thinkwe all know, so I won't write that stuff. Part of it went to Willits for the Skunk Train Tour. A GREAT weekend, with beautiful scenery, fun people,Porsche roads, and O'Haskell, O'Haskell singing "One keg of beer," or whatever that song is called.

    Porsche Factory Boxster/911 Short Shift Console/Kit - $350

For sale is a less than 8,000 mile used but like new factoryPorsche short shift kit, part number 997-424-983-00. The kitreduces shift throw distance by up to 35% on the 986 & 996cars (somewhat less on the 996 & 997 cars).I put it in my 2004 Boxster S and it took about 1.5 hours, thebiggest part of the time was spent removing the centerconsole. It's pretty straight-forward and lots of videos andinstructions online. IMHO, it's one of the most bestperformance improvements you can make for the moneyand feels much tighter than the stock shifter assembly. I gota good deal on a GT3 shift console so I replaced my short-shifter with that (and it actually has a longer throw, just adifferent feel). It is slightly firm to engage 1st gear when coldhowever it warms up quickly and is so much nicer overall. The kit/console retails for ~$505. As I understand it, the kitwill work on 986, 987, 996, and 997, and Cayman modelsthrough 2012.

This was built for an engineer with an eye to duplicate a1956 GS/GT Speedster. These are built in Vancouver BCwith only a limited number built each year. They are the bestof the best, and this one is pristine with only 33k miles. Thebody is one piece that is bonded & riveted to a boxed framemuch like the Porsche 904. It is wonderfully constructed andrivals and even surpasses the originals in many respects.Four wheel disk brakes, IRS suspension, a 2110 cc type 1engine producing 146 hp, with 150 ft. Lbs. of torque at 5200rpm. This little gem will not disappoint. These are built byappointment only and the cost to duplicate this is around$70,000.

Asking $43,000. Contact Max Handley Email [email protected]. 415-435-5299Cell 415-265-6063more photos here more details at Intermeccanica -Custom Coach Builders
