United Methodist Women Reading Program By Dee Bauserman

Many many thanks to all the women who participated in the UMW Reading Program this year. We had 31 readers and more than 100 books were read.

The following received certificates from the district for reading at least 5 books and response magazine: Nancy Walsh, Phoebe West, Barbara White, Jackie Ruff, Betsy Newlin, Jean Massie, Suzie Kendall, Helen Brown, Jan Brown, Donna Belford, Dee Bauserman and Regina Baldwin.

Other readers did not complete all the district requirements but participated by reading one or more books: Betty York, Judy Werner, Thelma Rowland, Tes-sie Reid, Megan Pugh, Susan Morris, Sandra Matthews, Helen Light, Jo Hillyard, Nita Haislip, Harriet Ellis, Beth Eisenhauer, Susan Creasy, Jackie Clippinger, Nancy Berlin, Doris Bright, Anne Brewster, Mary Ashton Athearn and Betty Armacost.

A special thanks to the Susanna circle for incorporating our reading program into a circle program.

The 2014 - 2015 Reading Program has begun. You will be asked to submit your book list by August 15, 2015. UMW says, "The Reading Program en-courages members to think critically about current issues through an annual selection of member-reviewed books. It offers an excellent opportunity to deepen your spirituality and to broaden your understanding of our mission work."

You can find more information in our library, on the UMW website and even "Amazon.com UMW Reading Program 2015."

First Night... by Kitty Redford

Stephen Ministry… by Donna Gutierrez

Looking for a fun and family way to celebrate New Year's Eve?

Braddock Street will host four entertainers during First Night Winchester this year. We will need

volunteers to greet guests at our Church on the evening of December 31. One or two hour shifts

are available and you will see some great entertainment while serving your community. It is a fun

and safe way to enjoy the evening and watch the New Year arrive with your family. Please call

Kitty Redford at 662-6142 to volunteer or to get more information.

Office Volunteers Needed!

Wednesday – There is an opening on Wednesdays from 9 AM to 1 PM or 10 AM to 2 PM for a church office volunteer. This person needs to have basic computer skills, a pleas-ant telephone manner and ability to greet members/visitors.

Lunch Coverage – There is a need for a few volunteers to be willing to be on the call list to fill in for a lunch break for the church secretary. Ability to answer the phone and greet members/visitors is desirable.

If you are interested in this ministry, please contact Kim at the church office [667-3366] or [email protected].

The Church Office will be closed on Thursday, November 27, and Friday, November 28, for Thanks-giving. Help Me Out! If you have a change in your address, name, telephone, email, or have a new baby, etc., please contact the church office so we may keep our records correct for mailings and membership statistics! We appreciate your help!

Insights into the Nurture Committee of BSUMC. Our Vision statement:

We will offer radical hospitality by showing a quality of depth and authenticity in caring for the stranger, the sick, the hungry and the neighbor. We will work hard to anticipate the needs of those within our community while nurturing our visitors so all feel welcomed, accepted and cared for in the Body of Christ.

The Nurture Committee is composed of several areas that address many needs within our church and meets quarterly to report and re-assess the ongoing needs of the church community.

Stephen Ministry, The Reception Team, College Students, Parish Nurses, Prayer Chain and Vis-itation Pastor committees are led and mobilized by caring people who willingly serve to offer support to those in need. It could be an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, a safe and private place to be heard, to offer hospitality to those gathering to support the loss of a loved one or celebrating a milestone in life or to take a prayer request and pass it on to the prayer chain so that others may intercede on their behalf, to send a card with a word of encourage-ment or support or provide a link between college campus life and the life of our church so the young do not feel isolated from life here at BSUMC and offer practical ideas that may help them during their academic time, establish-ing community outreach to young mothers and their children, educating our congregation on preventative health care, assessing the needs of the congregants and where we can better serve by being better prepared in the event of a medical emergency, visiting the shut-in who can no longer come and worship with us on Sunday, the list goes on and continues to grow as needs are revealed to us.

If you think there is an area where you would like to serve within the Nurture Committee or perhaps you see a need that might need to be addressed by this committee, please contact me at [email protected].

WATTS Service Opportunities:

WATTS is the beneficiary of Frederick County Parks and Recreation’s Battlefield Half-Marathon on Saturday, November 8. They are asking for 10 volunteers from each of its host congregations to help out either the day before the race or the day of the race. Jobs include registration, t-shirt and swag bag handout, course marshals, water stations, post-race refreshments. To volunteer, please contact Barbara White at [email protected] or 540-678-0271.

Round Hill Ruritans have graciously agreed to allow WATTS to host our guests at their building during the week of Dec 22-29, 2014!! Braddock Street is signed up for Sunday, 12/28. We will be providing breakfast in the morning and then snacks, dinner and other duties that evening. To volunteer, go to braddockstreetumc.org, click on MISSIONS and look for the link to the WATTS SignUpGenius volunteer page.

Our WATTS week is January 12-19, 2015! To volunteer, go to braddockstreetumc.org, click on MISSIONS and look for the link to the WATTS SignUpGenius volunteer page. Training for all volunteers will be held on Sunday, January 11, at 12:15 PM in Room 214. A light lunch will be provided. NEW THIS YEAR! Each congregation is being asked to provide their own medical personnel to provide screening, take temperatures, take blood pressure and administer over the counter medications. Those time slots (6:30-8:30 PM) have been added to the SignUpGenius page.

General WATTS Need: Grace & Mercy Ministries in Stephens City is partnering with WATTS to provide their bus and an evening driver during the weeks that county churches are hosting. However, a morning driver is still needed. The driver needs to have a CDL and a P Endorsement. He/she would be responsible to pick up WATTS guests at the county shelters at 7:00 AM and drop them off at CCAP. If you or someone you know would be willing to fill this position, please contact Barbara White at [email protected] or 540-678-0271. She will get the information to WATTS.

Missions

Angel Tree Now The Giving Tree Christmas is quickly approaching! This year we have decided to make some changes to our Christmas Angel Tree. In the past, we have purchased gifts for the children of incarcerated par-ents, primarily from the Norfolk area. This year we decided to bring the ministry closer to home and reach out to our local families. We have changed the name to The Giving Tree, and this year we will be buying gifts for the children and siblings from our Backpack ministry as well as the chil-dren and siblings from our Jonah’s Clubhouse ministry. We will also be purchasing gifts for over 200 senior citizens from our local Evergreen nursing home who have no immediate family of their own. We look forward to nurturing and expanding these local mission efforts throughout the year. The Giving Tree will go up Sunday, November 23. Please email Anne Buettner at [email protected] if you have any ques-tions or would like to help!

Sierra Leone Update

The Ebola outbreak has continued to spread throughout Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. The most recent update from WHO, as of 10 October 2014, reports that the cumulative number of cases attributed to the Ebola virus has climbed to 8376, resulting in 4024 reported deaths. Sierra Leone has 2950 suspected and confirmed cases - 40% of which have been reported in the last 21 days.

Mercy Hospital continues to serve the urgent healthcare needs in and around Bo, including continuing to hold outreach clinics in the villages around Bo. In Au-gust, Mercy's Nutrition Program provided life-saving therapeutic feeding supple-ments to 170 severely malnourished children. The Prenatal Clinic tested and di-

agnosed two expectant mothers with HIV. They were immediately enrolled in the Mercy HIV/AID Program and have begun the first course of anti-retroviral treatments, which improves the likelihood that their babies will be born without HIV. Students in all Child Rescue Centre programs remain healthy. Schools will remain closed until the Ebola out-break has been contained. During the CRC lockdown, CRC residential students are attending the "CRC School of Champions" six days a week, receiving instruction in core subjects as well as participating in sports and other enrichment activities. The children served in the Child Support and Foster Care programs are re-ceiving educational enrichment three days a week in small classes of healthy children led by the CRC staff who are working outside the residential compound. (from HCW Newsletter) Thank you for answering the call for help with the funding of an ambulance dedicated to transporting patients suspected of having Ebola to treatment centers! We are grateful for your continued prayers and support for our brothers and sisters in Sierra Leone.

Backpack Ministry

The Braddock Street Backpack Ministry serving Redbud Run Elementary is growing by leaps and bounds! There have been 210 food bags delivered to children since the start of school. Collection for the Backpack Families Thanksgiving began Oct. 12 and is nearly complete! We are also planning to provide Christmas gifts for the children and their sib-lings. With help from the Oglesby Class, they will also receive a Christmas food basket. This is a large undertaking but we know that the people of Braddock Street can be count-

ed on to assist those less fortunate.

If you are available to assist with holiday deliveries to homes in the area of Redbud Run, please contact Anne Brewster at (540) 869-2079 or Tracy Hogbin at (540) 247-1563.

Communication Specialist Walter Karlson recently began as Braddock Street UMC’s part-time communication specialist. He has lived in the area for 13 years and has been an active member of his home church (Bethel Lutheran) for almost 10. He received his Bachelor’s in Professional Communication from Old Dominion University and after spending several years in the workforce, began his own company called Grey Box Designs in 2013. On the side, he teaches a Microsoft Outlook class at Literacy Volunteers of America and continues to involve himself in Bethel. He is excited to join the BSUMC team and grateful for the opportunity to advance its communication programs.

Boy Scouts Troop 3 Trail

Troop 3 is a boy-run unit that has been chartered by BSUMC since 1928. Elections of Troop leaders were recently held and Ricardo Sanchez was elected as Senior Patrol Leader.

Twenty-four scouts camped out over the weekend of October 17-19 at the Kernstown Battlefield. They travelled to Belle Grove Plantation and participated in the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Cedar Creek by helping Dr. David Powers in the first aid tent and assisting the Battlefield Association with the reenactment.

The Troop will be travelling to Annapolis, MD for the Scout Day Camporee at the U.S. Naval Academy in mid-November. They will be camping at the Elks’ Camp Barrett, touring the Naval Academy, enjoying a tailgate lunch and going to see the Midshipmen of Navy take on the Georgia Southern Eagles in a Division 1 NCAA football game. The troop will be returning home Sunday morning after an interdenominational worship service.

Honoring Bob Bartley—Poet Longtime BSUMC Prenith (Bob) Bartley has always had a passion for poetry. He has written hundreds of poems about life, his relationships and about faith in God. Recently, he has started a new venture by commissioning musicians to set his poetry to music and record those songs for other artists. On Sunday, November 2, “All Saints Sunday,” a soloist will premier one of his works entitled “After This Life” - a song written about the end of life on earth and God’s comforting promise of new life with Him. Bob’s text has been set to music by Judy Connelly, Minister of Music.

This song will be part of the 8:30 and 11:00 AM worship services. As we honor our saints, let us be reminded of God’s promise of new life.

A Sneak Peek at Advent and Christmas Music All are invited to come and be part of Music Ministry to tell the story. Winter days will soon be here, and with the coming of cold weather, we anticipate the holidays, the joy of carol singing, and the many opportunities for special music. On Sunday, December 14, the Music Ministry will present an Advent Cantata, “Nativity Suites,” written by Benjamin Harlan, at the 8:30 and 11:00 AM. worship services. This cantata is brimming with festive carols and lightly seasoned with beautiful new Christmas songs. There are four suites and an opening prologue, with music, lyrics and narration bringing focus on each theme: A Child Is Born; I. Born Is The King; II. Child Of The Manger; III. And He Shall Come; IV. The Light of the World. We invite all youth and adult singers to become involved by attending rehearsals Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM in the choir room.

Opportunity for Children K-5 All children in grades K-5 are invited to join us for the telling of the most wonderful story the world has ever known - the birth of our Lord. The Children’s Christmas musical will be part of the Christmas Eve Worship Service at 5:30 PM. The musical work, “Radio J-O-Y!” by Vicki Wright and Terry York, retells the Nativity story through songs and stories of those who shared in the glorious event of Christ's birth. Radio studio "J-O-Y" sets the stage where a local children's choir and their pastor present the Christmas story while being interviewed by disc jockey celebrity, "Dee Jay." Throughout the on-air show, characters from the Christmas story share how their lives were touched by the Savior's birth. Radio reporters intersperse breaking news stories that coincidentally mirror the events of the very first Christmas. Rehearsals are on Sunday evening from 6:00 - 7:30 PM in the choir room beginning November 9. Come and join us! Contact Judy Connelly, Minister of Music, for more information - [email protected].

Youth Calendar for November

Youth Ministry... by Kristin Dawkins Children’s Ministry... by Patty Singhass

Third Graders Learn the Word Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105 Children in the third grade will be starting the Learning to Use My Bible program. This group is led by Carla Reese who is a seasoned veteran in teaching this class. The Bible version that is used is the New Revised Standard Version. This class helps to lay a foundation for the special im-portance the Bible and God’s Word will have in the chil-dren’s life-long faith journey. Each class contains activities that help the children become more familiar with their Bibles. These activities are divided into five categories: ● God’s path ● Finding the path ● Light of the path ● Points along the path ● Discovering Bible treasures. A special presentation will take place at the 11:00 worship hour on Sunday, November 16, 2014. The third grade Bible scholars will receive new Bibles to be used in the class and at home.

The Seven Project! (open to ALL youth, not just those who attend a

particular school)

The Seven Project school assembly is a

customized, multimedia event for America's

schools. The school administrators select the

topics presented to the students.

Program materials are professionally produced,

featuring multimedia screens, video segments,

lighting, quality sound and skilled presentation

speakers.

The Seven Project is national in scope and local

in focus and relevance.

These cover the requirements schools need, BUT

it is an opportunity to invite the students back to

their schools at night to hear the REAL truth—the

Gospel!

It is presented by their peers as well as quick

moving presentations and then the local churches

get to pray/follow up with the students.

We need our students to be there to invite and

encourage their friends.

Good and Faithful Servants

This children’s small group will meet for the final fall class on Sunday, November 2, from 6:00—6:30 PM. After that session all children will meet on Sunday evenings for rehearsal for the Christ-mas musical to be performed by the Chil-dren’s Choir at the 5:30 PM Christmas Eve Worship Service.

On January 11, the Good and Faithful Serv-ant class will resume.
