YOUR DOG’S BAD HABITS
and how to break them
BARKING AT THE DOORBELLDogs bark at the door-bell for any number of reasons. They could be excited or anxious about visitors, or they might bark as a watchdog tendency. Some dogs even equate their barking with you opening the door, so they think they're training you to open the door when they bark. One of the best ways to stop barking at the doorbell is to teach and reward an alternative behavior, like sitting on a nearby mat and waiting for the door to be opened.
STEALING FOOD OFF COUNTERSTrainers call this bad behavior “counter-surfing.” It’s one of the more difficult habits to break, since Fido experiences a huge reward for stealing the food: He gets to eat it! The easiest way to solve this problem is to eliminate the opportunity. Don’t leave food around, and use baby gates or fencing to restrict your dog’s access to the kitchen when you’re not there to supervise him. Teaching the “leave it” command is useful for when you catch him in the act of stealing snacks.
BARKING IN THE CARThose shrill yaps from the back-seat can be your dog expressing many emotions, from fear and frustration to exuberant joy. The best way to address barking in the car is to employ restraint equip-ment, like a harness or a crate to help your pet feel more secure. Other options include using a pheromone spray to help relax your dog, or giving him a chew toy to focus on during the car ride.
CHEWING INAPPROPRIATE OBJECTSChewing is a natural behavior for dogs, since they explore their environment with their mouth. It also relieves stress and boredom, and helps keep their teeth clean. When you catch your dog chewing inappropriate objects (like shoes, as many dogs do), redirect the chewing to an appropriate item, like a chew toy or stuffed Kong. Then praise your pup for selecting an acceptable outlet for his chewing behavior.

BEGGING AT THE TABLENo matter how cute or desperate for food your dog looks, consistency is the key to curbing dinner-table begging. Even if his begging only
works once in a blue moon, he’ll repeat and escalate the behavior until all his barking and whining pays off with a rare food reward. Instead of giving in, provide your dog with an appropriate dinner-time activity, like enjoying his own toys or food puzzles.
URINE MARKING INSIDE THE HOUSEDogs pee on things to mark territory or leave messages for canine friends, which is gener-ally acceptable outdoors. If you catch your dog urine marking (or even preparing to mark) inside the house, quickly interrupt him with a “no” or an “oops” and take him outside. Then reward and praise him for choosing to urinate outdoors. To prevent frequent urination in the same household spot, remove the scent of previous urine marks with a good enzymatic cleaner.
DIGGING IN THE YARDDigging is an extremely reward-ing activity for dogs, whether they’re digging to reach a scent or simply to release pent-up en-ergy. Help your dog practice this behavior appropriately by giving him a sandbox or section of the yard where he’s allowed to dig. Make sure this area has clearly marked visual boundaries, and use treats and toys to make this new digging place more exciting than the old one.

ARTSContinued from Page 1B Gemma Amendola may be one of the most well-known names in the local art scene for her recent work on the Linden mural. Amendola is also a member of the Linden Arts Council, an art teacher, and a graphic arts and 3D animation teacher. Amendola said, “I have been teaching 3D software to students at the Linden High School for some time now. My favorite thing about this medium is how cutting edge and innovative we can be with this tool.” She added, “Creative problem solving is essential. All the arts help to exercise that creative problem solving.” Art is a tool that crosses many paths and boundaries. Without art, there would be no advertising, no packaging, no mu-sic, no greeting cards, no homes and no local newspaper. Art is integrated into nearly all businesses and many of the
things we do on a daily basis. If you feel a hankering to be artistic, the possibilities are endless. Write a story or a poem, take a photograph, paint a wall, draw a picture, create a bouquet of flowers, craft something or make up a new dance move. All of these things, and more, are part of the arts.

Joey, this sounds like you may be dealing with a cracked tone ring on an axle shaft at one of your wheels
for the anti lock speed sensor. However, if the speed sensor is internal to the wheel bearing, then you would have to replace the hub/bearing as an assembly. Other things to look for are fractured or rubbed through wires near the wheels. In most cases, if the problem, it is not visible. You will need to have it checked with a lab scope to be able to determine the cause so that you do not replace costly parts only to find it does not correct what you are experiencing.

THESE GLOBAL WARMING folks never cease to amaze with their backtracking and redefinitions. Lately, it’s been CO2 causing warming. So-called high levels of CO2 the last 20 years and no aver-age warming has been observed. CO2 is 1½ times heavier than air and hugs the ground and dissipates into it.
THE MAY 5 vote, if passed, will replace the current gas tax with a percentage, a wholesale gas tax adjusted annually for inflation. Both the overall tax and the differ-ence will increase as gas prices increase.
A ‘NO’ VOTE on May 5 will give our leg-islators a second chance to find alternate solutions to fund Michigan roads without raising taxes.

Dale D. Hill 1931-2015 Dale D. Hill - of Fenton, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2015. Funeral services have taken place.
He was born in Flint on Novem-ber 30, 1931, son of Harry F. and Rose L. Hill.
He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force Police in the Korean War. He attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and received his Bach-elor’s Degree from Olivet College and a Master’s Degree from Central Michigan University. He spent 34 years as a teacher and administrator at Kearsley Community Schools. He was a loving and devoted husband, fa-ther and grandfather. Dale loved woodworking and fishing, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family. He leaves his wife of 61 years, Ella; son Dale II and daughter-in-law Christine Hill; daughter Kathy Hill and son-in-law Gary Carnahan; and one grandson, Harry E. Hill. Joanne Ellen Mueller (nee Lambert) 1944-2015 Joanne Ellen Mueller (nee Lambert) - age 71, a resident of Fenton, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on March 3, 2015. Joanne was born in Portage, Wisconsin on January 5, 1944. While still a small girl her family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she attended school and graduated from Rufus King High School in 1962. While in high school, she met her life long partner Herb Mueller. Joanne and Herb were married on Novem-ber 14, 1964 in Milwau-kee. After high school, Joanne attended beauty school and worked as a hair dresser before taking a pause to raise her chil-dren. In 1973 the family moved to Michigan where she spent the rest of her life in her beautiful home in Fenton. Over the years Joanne worked various jobs before returning to hair dressing where she worked for several years before retiring for good in the late 1990s. Joanne was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother who always wanted to help others. She spent countless hours of her life caring for her elderly parents, in-laws, and other relatives. Her life always revolved around her family and her children and grandchil-dren know that she was their biggest fan. Joanne had a passion for cook-ing and good food and took great joy in cooking for others. Many of us were blessed with the op-portunity to share one of her home cooked meals or famous Christmas cookies. Joanne is sur-vived by her beloved hus-band of 50 years Herb; son Eric (Kelly); daughter Heidi (Dan); grandchil-dren Nicholas, Eleanore, Kurt, Hunter, and Emily. She is also survived by her sister Wendy (Den-nis); brothers Richard (Linda), and Steven; many nieces, nephews, family, and friends. She is preceded in death by her mother Dorothy, father Albert, sister Sharon, mother- in-law Margaret, father-in-law Kurt, and many aunts, uncles, friends, and relatives. A funeral service will be held at 12 PM Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Lake Fenton United Methodist Church, 2581 North Long Lake Road, Fenton, Michi-gan. Visitation will be held Friday, 4-8 PM at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton. Those desiring may make con-tributions to Lake Fenton United Methodist Church. DEAR HEN: Your boyfriend should pay the market amount for rent (check local comparables). As it is, you derive the benefits of ownership; he believes if he contributes equally, he should also benefit equally. Don’t cave to his pressure. Adding his name to the deed would have major legal and financial
consequences. For instance, you could not refinance, sell or make changes without him signing off on it. If he wants to be a co-owner, he should offer to purchase (not be given) half the house at its current market value. You two would benefit from going through the process of getting a prenup, whether or not you decide to get married. You will emerge with transparency and insight together — or you will break under the weight of the negotiation.

Eyeglasses cause skin to blisterDR. ROACH: I recently purchased two new pairs of prescription eyeglasses that are in plastic frames. Forty-eight hours after I began wearing the first pair, the bridge of my nose became very red, and small, flat blisters appeared. The same behind both ears — anywhere the plastic touched my skin. I got this to heal with cortisone cream, and a week later I tried the other pair. This time, the reaction came within about 14 hours and involved swelling of my nose as well as the blistering and bright redness. What causes this — an allergy or some sort of chemical burn? The area itched yet felt like a burn and peeled after the cortisone treatment brought the blistering down. — N.W.
ANSWER: This sounds like a case of contact dermatitis, probably related to the chemicals used in the manufacturing of the plastic. Some people are just sensitive to any of the many chemicals used; however, I am increasingly seeing bad reactions to manufactured goods, especially to those made overseas. Not
every country has the same safeguards we have in place in North America. Some of these chemicals are volatile and disappear after a short while. It’s possible that washing the glasses in hot, soapy water could have been able to remove them. However, in your case, the reaction was so strong that I would avoid that brand in the future.
MAPLE & BROWN SUGAR BAKED BEANS
INGREDIENTS:• 9 Pieces Bacon, diced• 1 c. Chopped Onion• 1 Green Pepper, diced• 2 Garlic Cloves, chopped• 6 oz. Tomato Paste• 2 c. Water• 2 T. White Vinegar• 1 c. Light Brown Sugar• 1 c. Maple Syrup• 4 - 15 oz. Cans Navy Beans, rinsed and
drained• Kosher Salt, as desired• Fresh Ground Black Pepper, as desired
DIRECTIONS:1. In a Dutch oven or large pot, render
the bacon until it’s cooked through and crispy; then add the onion, peppers and garlic and saute 3-5 minutes until the vegetables start to soften.
2. Next, stir in the tomato paste, water, vinegar, sugar, maple syrup and beans and bring to a boil.
3. Reduce heat to a low simmer, cover the pot and cook for 1-1½ hours; stirring occasionally until the sauce has thickened.Recipe from carriesexperimentalkitchen.com
