IN THIS SECTION: SECTION B By Yvonne Stegall and Tim Jagielo [email protected]; 810-433-6792 Linden The air smells like sun- screen, and the brightly colored kayaks line the street and banks of the Shiawas- see River. Dogs and humans alike are equipped with life jackets as they push off for the 2014 Shiawassee River Flotilla, and many different kayaks were present. From the wider, more open consum- er-style, to the slimmer sportier type, all different shapes in between were represented among the 100 or so that attended the Keepers of the Shiawassee and Southern Lakes Parks and Recre- ation hosted event. The flotilla was either a relaxed, lazy trip down the river, or an energetic ex- cuse to exercise, and either way, the participants ended up at Spoonz restau- rant on Lake Po- nemah for a $5 boxed lunch, and photo, which is the actual “flotilla” part. All they needed was a kayak (or ca- noe) to participate, and the river itself is accessible all along the shoreline throughout the tri-county area. Linden resident and avid kayaker Maggie Yer- man said, “I wanted a kayak because I liked being on the water.” REI, a famous outdoor outfitter , has a great website with suggestions on how to choose the right kayak when shop- ping at any store. What do you plan to do? The waters on which you plan to kayak do make a difference, and so does your own body size. A shallower river like the Shiawassee doesn’t need anything bigger than a 10 or 12-foot kayak. Anything bigger won’t handle the twists and turns. The two most important decisions of your kayak purchase#1- Your life jacketYerman said that not just any life jacket will do. “It’s not just about the boat, you need a paddling jacket,” she said. Normal life jackets, like those used for regular boats or for skiing, are too bulky to allow you to fit comfortably in the seat of your kayak. A paddling jacket is also made with a different kind of armhole that allows more ma-neuverability for paddling.

#2- Your paddlesPaddle shopping is also an important step, according to Yerman, who said, “A cheaper paddle may be heavier and more bulky.” She recommends a two-piece paddle, and said that sometimes the pricier paddle will be the best option.

SHADOW CREEK GOLF COURSELAS VEGAS, NEVADA This 18-hole golf course, owned by casino mogul Steve Wynn and designed by Tom Fazio, opened in 1989. Laced with waterfalls and lakes, planted with more than 200 varieties of trees, it sits in a giant desert dug-out, a sunken swatch of land that Fazio created by moving more than 3 million cubic yards of earth to make sure the course is hidden from public view. uYou can save big at home, dining out and traveling with these special tipsBy Sally [email protected]; 810-629-8282 You can keep more money in your wallet by being mindful of your spending habits. Whether you’re making cost-saving repairs at home or finding new ways to dine out on a dime, you can save cash with more care-ful spending. Here are a few suggestions, excerpted from AARP magazine.Home maintenance• Save $100 a year by using smart power strips that cut electricity to devices in standby mode.• Save 20 percent on energy to heat and cool a home when it’s well sealed and insulated.• Reverse your ceiling fan in the winter, so the fan will pull up cool air and send down the heated air that’s settled near the ceiling.Food• Use a slow cooker for cooking beef, as you can use cheaper cuts of beef and let them cook all day.• Learn to stir fry so you can use small amounts of meat and whatever’s left in your refrigerator.• Shop for produce in season, and buy from local farmers markets. Blanch vegetables and freeze herbs for later use.• Watch for deals on fresh foods, especially beef, chicken and pork, and freeze what you don’t use right away. Remove packaging, rewrap food in plastic wrap and place in freezer bag with date marked. Try to use within a couple months.Home décor• Decorate with a mix of high and low (prices) and old and new pieces. Place hand-me-down antiques next to something new, trendy and inexpensive.• Find the same rich colors offered by high-end paint companies for less by taking their chips to a hardware store that can match the color.Leisure time/vacations• Attend lectures and concerts at nearby colleges and universities. • Enjoy local community theater at a frac-tion of the cost of a big show in the city.• Check websites like broadwayforbroke-people.com, a guide to scoring great tickets for less than usual Ticketmaster prices.• For cheaper flights, book the earliest and latest flights of the day. • Head to ski resorts in the summer and beach locations in late August or early September. • Check out great deals at Disney World Resorts

Want to save money?

10 things Americans waste money on

1. Credit card interest — if you can’t afford it at its base price, you certainly can’t afford it with a huge interest rate added on to it.2. Deal websites — many people end up not using “the deal” they bought within the specified time limit.3. Appetizers — with restaurant por-tions so large to begin with, why pay more to eat more than you need?4. ATM fees — when you use a bank that is not your home bank, you get charged to get cash out. Then many banks charge you again. These fees add up.5. Overdraft fees — do your math, spend less than you make and you’ll never pay a dime of these fees.6. Speedy shipping — use standard shipping and learn patience to wait rather than pay extra for priority ship-ping.7. Designer baby clothes — new baby clothes with expensive labels will only get worn once or twice. Think garage sales and resale shops when clothing your little ones.8. Unused gym memberships — unlike the monthly commitment, the monthly dues don’t stop, so make sure it’s what you commit to do before you sign up.9. Premium cable channels — people don’t watch 90 percent of the channels that are on. 10. Daily coffee trips — people used to brew their own coffee themselves, and as a culture, we’ve gotten away from that. Look at how much money you dish out for that concoction over a month or two.

What’s that in your hand? In an article titled ‘His Eye is on the Sparrow,’ Jerry Jenkins, co-author of the best-selling ‘Left Behind,’ intro-duced his readers to Dameon Sharkey, a seventh-grader, whose compassion and faith should be an example to us all. Dameon’s teacher, Jeff Leeland, was going through the toughest time of his life. His son, Michael, had been diagnosed with Leukemia and without a bone marrow transplant wasn’t likely to survive. Michael’s 7-year-old sister, Amy, proved to be a perfect match but their insurance refused to cover the $200,000 cost. In the absence of insur-ance coverage, the hospital required a $175,000 deposit, an amount the Lee-lands didn’t have and couldn’t borrow. Then young Dameon got involved. Dameon told his mother he wanted to empty his savings account and give it all to save Michael’s life. When she called Jeff to tell him of Dameon’s desire, he tried to decline the offer but Dameon had made up his mind and be-fore long he was placing 12 crumpled $5 bills in his protesting teacher’s hand, an act of love and generosity that would catch on and save Michael’s life. When the news of Dameon’s gift became known, a fund was started at the school and within four weeks it had grown from Dameon’s $60 donation to $220,000. Amy donated her bone marrow and the operation proceeded. Michael survived the procedure and became cancer free.

Dameon wasn’t the first to give up what was in his hand and see it produce a miracle. Thousands of years earlier, Moses stood near a burning bush in the desert of Midian listening to a call to go to Egypt and lead his people out of slavery. Then this future great leader began to make excuses. ‘Who am I that I should go?’ he asked. ‘They will not believe me.’ ‘What is that in your hand?’ asked a voice from the fire. ‘A rod,’ Moses replied; his answer accentuating how little he had in his hand and how ill equipped he felt for the great task being assigned to him (Exodus 4:2). Yet Moses’s rod would later be called the rod of God. He would raise it and the Red Sea would open for his people to escape those who wanted to enslave them again (Exodus 14). He would strike a rock with that rod and refreshing water would flow in the desert to enable these former slaves to drink and keep moving forward. Centuries later, after the disciples of our Lord had run out of ideas about how to feed five thousand hungry people on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, an un-named boy gave up his meager lunch of fish and bread and saw it become enough to feed this hungry multitude and have 12 full baskets left over (John 6). We all have something in our hands to give. And there are too many needy people awaiting our help to keep what we have to ourselves; too many prob-lems to solve for us to hold back from helping; too many who need to know what it means to trust God and walk with Him every day to remain silent. What’s that in your hand? Are you willing to release it to make a difference?Roger Campbell is an author, a broadcaster and columnist who was a pastor for 22 years. By Sally [email protected]; 810-629-8282 Joseph Bujak, 13, was on the young end of his age category competing last Saturday in the Michigan Idol compe-tition as part of the Music by the Bay Festival in New Baltimore. While he didn’t end up as a winner in the top three, he was pleased to have been a part of such a large competition, according to his mother, Chris Bujak. The Michigan Idol competition is the top venue in the state for vocal singing contests.  Joseph, who will enter the eighth-grade at St. John Catholic School in Fenton, sang “I See Fire” by Sheeran. Locally, he sings with a band out of A Joyful Noise Music Studio in Fenton called What Remains. He competed in the 13- to 18-year-old category, after having been selected as one of 25 final-ists to compete following a contest in Mt. Clemens in July.

EVERY DAY I thank God for the GOP, the Republicans we have in the House and Senate as they attempt to rein in a reckless, incompetent, disengaged and dangerous president. Obama has caused more worldly problems than any other president and is harming our country every day.

BARACK OBAMA TOOK a solemn oath to uphold our constitution and the laws and ordinances contained therein. Appar-ently, the game of golf must be in there somewhere also because it’s the one duty our President seems to faithfully fulfill.

MichiganVotes.org is a free, non-partisan website created by the Mackinac Center for

Public Policy to provide concise, non-partisan, plain-English descriptions of every bill and vote in the Michigan House and Senate. While the

Legislature is on a summer break this Roll Call Report, released on Friday, Aug. 8 reviews key

votes of the 2013-2014 session.

Senate Bill 711: Extend Cobo sales tax exemptionTo extend for another two years the 2014 sunset on a law that exempts from sales tax the purchase of tools and equipment by a contractor if these are used to fix or renovate Cobo Hall in Detroit. Passed 34 to 1 in the SenateSen. Jim Ananich (D-Genesee County)

YES NOSen. Dave Robertson (R-Genesee County)

YES NOPassed 100 to 10 in the HouseRep. Joe Graves (R-Argentine Township)

YES NO

Senate Bill 319: Repeal mandatory life sentences for minorsTo revise Michigan’s mandatory life sentence with no chance of parole for certain very serious crimes committed by minors. Life without parole would no longer be automatic in these cases but prosecutors could request it. The mea-sure responds to a U.S. Supreme Court decision, and would not automatically apply retroactively to the approximately 350 current prisoners in this category.Passed 36 to 0 in the SenateSen. Jim Ananich (D-Genesee County)

DID NOT VOTESen. Dave Robertson (R-Genesee County)

YES NOPassed 62 to 48 in the HouseRep. Joe Graves (R-Argentine Township)

YES NO

Senate Bill 396: Restrict replace-ment-construction property tax hikesTo revise a provision restricting property tax assessment increases on construc-tion that replaces parts of a structure damaged by accident or an act of God, so that no assessment would be imposed as long as the construction is of substantially the same materials and square footage. This cap would also apply to value-increasing improvements required to meet current health, sanitary, zoning, safety, fire, or construction codes and ordinances.Passed 38 to 0 in the SenateSen. Jim Ananich (D-Genesee County)

YES NOSen. Dave Robertson (R-Genesee County)

ABOUT LA BREZZAIn Italian, “La Brezza” means “The Breeze,” which is an appropriate de-scription of this delicate sculpture that overlooks the beauty of the flowers in the Demonstration Garden at Apple-wood. You can almost see the air lift her arms higher and higher. She was purchased from Florentine Craftsmen, Inc. for Mrs. Mott’s 95th birthday by friends, staff and family.

The best thing about small town living is right in your hands.

We believe the Times is the best newspaper in the state. So does the Michigan Press Association, which awarded the Times “Michigan Newspaper of the Year” for 2012.

We also believe that once you read the Times, like over 20,000 of your neighbors currently do, you will realize that at just .36¢ per issue the Times is the primary provider of everything you need

to know about your schools, your neighborhood, your politics, your emergency services, your community and your way-of-life in small-town Michigan. Both our Midweek and

Weekend editions are packed with interesting, entertaining and informative information that saves you time and money, while keeping you connected to your community.

SUNDAY SCRAMBLERUnscramble the letters within each rectangle to form four ordinary words.

Then rearrange the boxed letters to form the mystery word, which will complete the gag!

Long-term marriage is lonely, lacks sparkDEAR AMY:I have been married for more than 20 years to a very nice man who is a good father. We generally get along, but we don’t have much of a romantic relationship. It has always been this way (at least since early dating). He works hard and is devoted to both his career and children, but I feel like our relationship is not that important. We have been to marriage counseling, but our issues were never resolved (at least to my satisfaction). I feel like we are friends but not lovers. As I get older, I wonder what will become of us and how I will deal with the loneliness as our children move away. Do you have any advice? — Friends Without Benefits

DEAR FRIENDS:To enjoy a companionable togetherness, you two have to spend time together. Simply put, you have more to talk about when you’ve done things together. Traveling, hiking, bike riding, going to concerts or working on a home project together are all positive places to start. Meanwhile, you should definitely continue with professional counseling on your own. Your loneliness could have deeper roots than your marriage alone.

DEAR AMY:Every year a friend generously offers her vacation cottage in a popular

beach town for all of her women friends to have a gathering. We are eight women in our 50s. We provide meals and gifts for the cottage, and

when we go out, we all very happily pay our friend’s share. My only issue is that at the end of our four- or five-day stay, she hands us a broom and vacuum and asks us to clean the cottage. Inevitably, we are on our hands and knees, finding items under beds and dust so thick that this has to be the only cleaning of the summer. We are seven menopausal women, sweating profusely, and some of us cannot bend

very easily. Meanwhile the owner is reading magazines on the couch! We obviously love the cottage and are happy to change sheets, etc., but I feel that she is taking advantage of us! Suggestions? — Cinderella and the Gang

DEAR CINDERELLA:Beach towns usually host a variety of professional cleaning services where you can hire cleaners for a vacation turnover. Let’s say this fee is $100 to $200. Split between seven of you, this would be a bargain, and you could kick back for one last beachfront brunch during the cleaning session. Even added to your other expenses, paying for cleaning would still be much cheaper than renting a cottage on your own.

DEAR DR. ROACH:For the past eight months, I have had a twitch in the inside of my right ear. I can hear it twitching, and I can feel it. It seems to get worse when I talk on the phone (it’s my phone ear), but sometimes I wake up with it twitching. It feels like when your eye twitches, only it’s inside my ear. I could liken the movement to a snapping of fingers. It’s more a vibration than a crunch. I do hear a sound when it happens, similar to when you get water plugging up your ear. So it plugs/unplugs with each twitch.I have gone to my general practitioner for help. He referred me to an ear specialist. They did a hearing test, which I passed with flying colors. Other than that, they didn’t have any solution to my problem. It is very bothersome and seems to be getting worse. I think it may be stress-related, but I don’t know what to do to

make it stop. Can you help me? — P.C.

ANSWER:This sounds like a spasm of one of the muscles that control the tension of the eardrum, the tensor tympani and stapedius muscles. These muscles protect our ears, to some extent, from loud noises. Just like you can have a spasm or twitch in your eye muscles -- or indeed any muscle -- these muscles cause a

unique sound sensation in the ear when they repeatedly twitch with high frequency. The plugging/unplugging sensation is likely the Eustachian tube, which controls the pressure in the ear, opening and closing. The bad news is that I don’t know of anything to make it stop. The good news is that it won’t affect your hearing. Very rarely, it can be a sign of a nerve or muscle disease, but it is likely a normal phenomenon that many people have but few notice

and articulate it as well as you have.
