Love your garden and spruce up for Spring

Spring is only a couple of weeks away, and most of us cant wait.

Here are some tips for sprucing up your garden for Spring.

First of all you should do just a general tidy up. Rake up all the leaves and clean out your drains. A blocked drain can have a big

impact on your soil and your plants. Most plants hate to be in damp soil. If what you are removing from your drains is composted

and a dark colour, almost black, you need to do it more often but don’t throw it away—it is excellent compost for the garden.

With the leaves fond you can have a good look at your lawn. Chances are you have worn a path in the grass where you walk the

most. This may be an easy fix with a garden fork to aerate the soil and give the root system a chance to reinvigorate and help the

grass recover. If however it is really bad after aerating, stake off the area with tomato stakes and string to change your route of

path. If you have bare patches, buy turf at landscape supply yards, larger nurseries or Bunnings. Cut them to fit the damaged

areas.

Now for the garden. The obvious job is to get on top of the weeds. If you go into spring with weeks you are going to be living with

them all year round. Beat them now and it is much easier to manage for the next year. The soil is at its softest this time of year so

you are more successful to do so. As soon as you are happy with your weeding, top up your mulch. Replacing 40-50 mm allows

for water to penetrate the mulch and for oxygen to help break the mulch down. Too thick can be detrimental to your garden.

Always keep mulch away from the trunk of plants as this can cause the base to rot.

Before your deciduous trees burst back into life, now is the time to check their bone structure. Look for dead, damaged or

diseased branches and remove them. Check for branches that grow back in towards the middle of the tree that may rub against

another and remove any branches back near the trunk that appear to be out of context and affect the overall appearance of the

tree.

Now enjoy the rest of the paper but

find some time this weekend for the

garden.

This year the Queen’s Birthday will be on Monday 26th September.
