A thriving independent retailer celebrates success with Cybertill

After Noah is an independent homeware retailer selling eclectic products through its ecommerce website and from its beautiful shop in Islington, London.

After Noah stocks thousands of products including vintage and modern toys, gifts, books,

homeware and vintage furniture, which is all restored in its onsite workshop. Co-founder

Matthew Crawford explains, “We’ve always been independent. We started off as an antique

restoration shop. Then we started selling antique & vintage furniture, then more contemporary

pieces, later adding homeware, gifts, and a fully-fledged traditional toyshop.”

After Noah knows its customers so well that the Islington shop has been designed for them,

including thoughtful touches like wide, pram-friendly aisles, and fresh and varied stock for

repeat customers. “We see our customers grow and change. We have mums who’ve just had

babies who used to shop with us for furniture who wind up coming back in after having a baby

to look at the toys. It’s an experience to shop here. We let all the kids pick up and touch whatever

they like, nobody gets in trouble. It just works and customers love it,” Matthew says.

shops and even a concession in Harvey Nichols, and the Cybertill system has been flexible enough to

change with our needs over the years. We sell quite a lot online now and that’s growing too. I love the

fact that there’s an integrated ability to manage our website directly from the same stock detail.”

One day I was on holiday downtown in New York in the Apple store, and I got a call from a colleague

at my shop saying that something wasn’t scanning in at the right price on the till, so I logged in to the

said – OK try it again? And it worked. The idea that you can do that is amazing.”

After Noah gets extremely busy at Christmas, doing a sale approximately every 40 seconds in

December. From October, the ground floor of the shop is transformed and re-merchandised, with

furniture moving downstairs to make room for a wondrous gifting emporium customers love at

Christmastime.

The shop needs a system that can handle large baskets with minimal queues. Cybertill’s EPoS

“We barely even have queues in the shop even though basket sizes can range from a few items to

50 or 60 items during busy periods. Having a fast throughput even just on the weekends is really

you don’t have discrepancies when you cash up. Cybertill works like a Sainsbury’s till and people

underestimate the power of that.”

There is a lot of love in the After Noah shop. Staff love their jobs, the shop is merchandised with the

kind of care an attention you’d give your own home. It’s a real neighbourhood gem.

Matthew’s plans for the future of After Noah include a garden centre selling live plants, and

experiential food and drink stalls featuring local brands to make the environment even more

engaging. We can’t wait to see what’s next.
