KURLING

It's been a quiet month, with many friends and players succumbing to flu, coughs and colds. Two of our members have undergone operations and we wish them well for a speedy recovery.

Our Kurling stones have undergone treatment too, they have all had new bearings. This is necessary from time to time due to constant use. Many thanks to Fran for implementing this.

We haven't started the competition yet but it is in the pipeline. The format is slightly different this year so watch this space and I will attempt to control my excitement!

We welcome two new members to the Thursday group but there are still a couple of places if anyone is interested. You don't have to take Kurling too seriously and it's a good way of meeting new people.

GAMES AFTERNOON

This is a pleasant way of spending an afternoon and cribbage is becoming popular. We actually have a member who is in a local cribbage league so he is able to show us the ins and outs. Our next session is on Wednesday 14th March 2pm to 4pm.

LUNCHEON CLUB

The next luncheon takes place on Wednesday 21st February at our own White Lion, more about that in the next issue. June is already looking at venues for forthcoming lunches .The next one will be sometime in April. If you are interested in joining in give June a ring on 861400.

Well, would you believe it, the recyclers let us down again? When Gillian, our programme secretary emailed the guest speaker for our meeting to confirm that he hadn't forgotten that he was coming to speak to us, she received a reply that he left the company last June. The firm hadn't let us know and like the last time they didn't have anyone at the firm to come to tell us if we were doing it right. OK, we know the basics but it's the different plastics and those pesky foil backed plastic tablet containers. Do they go in the grey bin or not? We will never become recyclers specialists and continue to put things in the black bin when we are in doubt and fill that big hole in the ground up the road for the detectorists of the future to discover. With Janet our President still incapacitated, the team consisted of one member of the A team and one from last month's B team. Helen in the Chair and yours truly, the Scribe (thanks for all your good wishes which I received when I was confined to barracks). We were able to tell the members that Gillian had managed to find a replacement speaker, or rather, entertainer in the form of Tina Clayton (our Sandra's daughter) who had entertained us at our party last year. She wasn't able to sing this time owing to a throat infection, but had devised a Sing-along-a-bingo which included songs from the sixties mainly and we had to name the singer and position in the charts and the year. Some of us failed miserably, but Joan Baron won the game and others were successful in the quiz.

Easter eggs were the prizes. Jilian Watson thanked Tina for stepping in at short notice and for the interesting quiz and entertainment. Thank you to all our supporters of the coffee morning which we held in aid of the South Lincs Blind Society. We were able to send them a cheque for £195 towards their Centenary appeal. The Federation Chairman's challenge for a bottle of champagne raised £52 at the same event. With March being our AGM, nominations were posted in the box. If you weren't at the meeting and would like to make your nominations, they will be accepted by the Secretary up to fourteen days before the meeting, but must be in writing. At that point, tea and cakes were served by the hostesses, Helen and Hazel, ably assisted by Liz, Lynne, Audrey, Rosemarie and washer-upper, Sandra. Back to business brought an appeal for women's and children's clothes and toys for the local Women's Refuge. They don't have to be new, just reasonable and decent. When women walk out from a broken marriage or cruel environment, they often walk out in just the clothes they are wearing and nothing else, no personal articles whatsoever. Please ladies, do what you can. Thank you. We heard that the Home Economics Group, which we are members of, is in danger of folding so if you would like to attend probably the final meeting on May 21st when Adam Smith will tell and probably sing about from West End to Broadway, tickets are available now at a very reasonable price (less than a fiver). We are in charge of the Bring and Buy stall. County are to organise a driver awareness day for the motorists amongst us, or why not decorate a jute bag at a workshop at Sleaford in April or if a

quiz is more “your bag”, there's one at Great Hale four days before. If exercise is more in your line, join in with fellow members with a walk across the Humber bridge where we will gather with the members of North Lincs. and Humberside Federation and meet up with East Yorkshire members on International Women's Day on March 8th.

In order to get entries for the competitive classes at both the Lincs. Show and the Make Bake and Show event at Navenby, we received copies of the schedules in good time for us to get knitting and stitching, etc, etc, etc. The winner of the monthly competition, a white item, was yours truly, with an ornamental duck, the judge said it was a duck, I always thought it was a goose, but there you go, it's in the eye of the beholder as they say. Helen was in second place with a sea shell. The Flower of the month was won by Sandra with Jilian and Rosemarie in joint second place. A “Get well” card was signed by all the members to be sent to Janet. We hope that it won't be too long before she's back in the Chair. Our next meeting, the AGM, is on the 20th March at the usual venue, the Sports and Social Club at two o'clock. Our old friend, Pat Read, the W.l. Adviser is retiring this year, but she is still coming to see us and she could be bringing her replacement to keep us in order as Pat has done these past few years (in her dreams, keeping us in order is like plaiting fog). If you would like to spend an afternoon with “the rebels”, you know that you will be most welcome, there will be refreshments, but you know that too, so see you at two then? Oh good.

COLSTERWORTH & DISTRICT GARDENERS & ALLOTMENT HOLDERS ASSOCIATION

Our February meeting had a very friendly feel as the talk was given by one of our members and was based on her own garden. Ros has been gardening since she was a child and led us through her present garden, sharing her experiences on the way. We were given many useful hints, especially on the best varieties of flowers and fruit to grow in this area.We are all looking forward to our next meeting. It is on Monday, March 12th at 7.30 in the Village Hall and is the return of David Tideswell, whose talk on 'Our Friendly Garden Robin' was the highlight of our Programme in 2016. This time his talk is entitled 'Garden Birds of Spring and Summer' - and all visitors are very, very welcome. If you are not a member the cost of entry will be a little higher than usual - but still a very reasonable £5 - which includes tea or coffee and cake. We'll also be running a raffle for our Club funds. There is no need to book, just turn up on the night. As always, new members are very welcome. It's the beginning of our 'subscription year', so a good value time to join! If you've any queries, do phone 860312.Rachel Popham

In addition to reports of Muntjak in the village and Fallow Deer crossing road near Twyford, there was a photo of four Roe Deer in a local field. The colourful finches attract a lot of attention at bird feeders in the winter. A recent study by the British Trust for Ornithology shows the dramatic decline in numbers of small seed-eating birds due partly to changes in farming practice. Weed control, new varieties of corn and harvesting efficiency mean that seed is not scattered. Autumn drilling of spring crops means that there is less fallow where the seed bank in the soil can be exploited. The dramatic decline in house sparrows is due to strict hygiene standards imposed on farmyards — no scattered corn to feed on and less places for nesting. Locally house sparrows have retreated to gardens where they can be abundant. Chaffinches and Goldcrests are the only finches which have increased in numbers due in part to householders provisioning. Greenfinches, which also benefitted in this way, have unfortunately been the most affected by a parasite which can be picked up and transferred on bird tables. Less common and always worthy of note are Bullfinches, Linnets, Siskins and Bramblings. Yellowhammers are not reported from bird tables but these and other seed eaters are benefitting from conservation schemes locally on farms where wide headlands are managed for conservation. Areas sown for game food and cover also benefit wild birds. The Great White Egret which came tto stay in February, feeding in the River Witham, was until recently one of our rarer visitors and doesn't appear in many field guides. Its numbers have expanded in Europe and it was recorded as breeding in the Somerset levels in 2012. Since then it has bred in 2017 in Norfolk. It is the same size as the grey

heron and so much larger than the little egret — all three species being found together in Colsterworth. The drawing is from a photo sent in with the record, for which many thanks.

An event of much smaller scale, but still a matter for wonder took place in a wet corner of the garden in a neglected plant pot. It contained a weed — that is a plant in the wrong place. This leafy Liverwort is a native, but sometimes infects nursery plants kept in humid environments. Related to mosses its leaf-like structures divide in two and spread flat to the ground. Marchantia polymorpha has no common name being commonly ignored. It is flowerless and can spread by spores. It has a belt, braces and buttoned up approach to the future. It has separate male and female structures like umbrellas or parasols which together produce the spores. It can also produce two independent plants should it decay in the centre. A third method is to produce cup-like containers in which are lens shaped cells called gemmae. In the aforementioned plant pot rain had splashed the gemmae onto the surrounding soil where they had developed anchoring threads. New

Follow up to the public consultation of the Open Space and Sports Facilities in Colsterworth and Woolsthorpe by Colsterworth, 6th February 2018

This was well attended by approximately fifty residents, Parish Council and South Kesteven District Council Members and two representatives of Colsterworth Trust Estate, Simon Allam (Estate Manager) and Mike Sibthorpe the Development and Planning Consultant. Members of the public strongly aired their well-informed concerns and views over the proposed development of the Woolsthorpe Playing area and the potential offering of the undeveloped land off Old Post Lane if planning permission was agreed. Raising issues such as:-Ÿ The positioning of the proposed new houses on Woolsthorpe Paying area in front of the remaining play area gives rise to safety issues, lack

of visibility and could possibly attract unwanted attention from undesirable individuals. This point was stressed by other speakers.Ÿ Additional liability costs etc to make the undeveloped land safe and ongoing maintenance.Ÿ The increased traffic which would impact Old Post Lane. Woolsthope Manor has between 50,000 – 60,000 visitors a year which has

increased significantly over the years. More houses will mean more cars. There will be a need for traffic calming.Ÿ The point was made that when there is a closure on the A1 vehicles use Old Post Lane as a diversion. Ÿ There will be an increase in pollution and the possibility of losing some trees from the front of the existing play area.Ÿ Is the design and accessibility good enough? Ÿ Several members of the public referred to the Neighbourhood Plan – green spaces are protected unless equivalent green space is made

available.Ÿ A member of the Working Group which had prepared the Neighbourhood Plan for the Parish Council drew the meeting's attention to Policy

12 in the Plan. Policy 12 designates five areas of the Parish as Local Green Spaces. Woolsthorpe Play Park and Playing Field is now a Local Green Space (as is the adjacent Nature Trail / Railway line). Policy 12 continues, “The development of Local Green Spaces will not be permitted other than in very special circumstances where the benefits of the development clearly outweigh any harm.” The Neighbourhood Plan was approved by the community in the Referendum last summer and was adopted by SKDC in September 2017.

Ÿ On housing need, the Neighbourhood Plan had limited evidence of the demand for affordable and social housing and it was suggested that, even with the 16 affordable properties expected in the Bridge End development, it may be time for a fresh Housing Needs Survey by SKDC with Parish Council support.

Ÿ A general point was made concerning children losing a play area or part of a play area and since the last development of affordable homes they had seen an increase of young children therefore it was now more important to keep hold of it.

Ÿ A point was made that there was too much emphasis on building houses and that there was no need for an alternative play area. Was there an alternative area to build houses?

Ÿ Would the village infrastructure cope? More school places would be needed and more Doctors.Ÿ There was a short discussion about the changing tastes in recreation of young people nowadays. The evidence on demand for future

facilities in the Parish from the surveys done before the Neighbourhood Plan was prepared were quoted. 'Outdoor facilities for older children and teenagers' was third out of 10 choices while 'Facilities for Sports' was the seventh out of 10 for the Households surveyed. (In the survey of Teenagers, 'Outdoor facilities for older children and teenagers' was third out of a choice of 8 options, and Facilities for Sports' was sixth out of 8.)

Chairman Derek Cox acknowledged that many people who live in Woolsthorpe are unhappy with the proposals.

Simon Allam from Colsterworth Trust Estates made the following suggestions: -Ÿ Subject to planning there could be a S106 Agreement (or equivalent) that might provide some funding for infrastructure/development on the

6 acres being offered.Ÿ The plans were not for all affordable housing as such, but the Trust was looking at having a proportion of internally rented accommodation

for their own people; it would be a private development.Ÿ So far, no planning permission had been sought. He also said they could look at re-positioning the houses on the green space having

listened to the concerns raised. He accepted the feeling of the meeting was to keep the play areas within Woolsthorpe.

At the Parish Council Meeting on 6th February 2018 the Parish Council formed a sub-committee to investigate the potential development of the Woolsthorpe Playing and the potential offering of the undeveloped land off Old Post Lane if planning permission was agreed. The Parish Council is conscious of the importance of providing recreational land for the growing community and that all avenues are explored.

NATURE TRAIL LITTER PICKOver four consecutive Mondays in January and February 2018 our Nature Trail volunteers braved the cold winter weather to complete a large-scale litter pick. Over 100 bags of litter were collected filled with, shoes, glass & plastic bottles, cans, crisp packets, sandwich wrappers and much more. Even an old music centre had been found dumped on there. Let's keep our Nature Trail clean, don't drop litter!

DOG POO!Not only was there a large amount of litter but also dog poo! The village is very fortunate to have this great recreational facility for all to enjoy. It is however being spoilt by some inconsiderate dog owners who do not clear up after their dogs. CLEAR IT UP PLEASE – THIS IS NOT A DOG TOILET!

FOCUS Scarecrow Fun on 7 and 8 July 2018

The FOCUS Group invite individuals, families and groups located within the villages of Colsterworth and Woolsthorpe to join in the fun. There are two ways to join in. Firstly, you can build your own scarecrow and enter it for public display over the event weekend. A prize will be awarded for the best scarecrow. Details of how to enter will be published next month. The Scarecrow Festival in 2015 produced some absolutely fantastic displays and we hope our two villages can once again put on a great show. The second way of getting involved is to wander around the villages over the weekend, to admire the wonderful creations. The Scarecrow Fun will run alongside the Open Gardens event but will be separately organised. Scarecrow judging will take place on Saturday 7 July.It is hoped entrants will continue to display their scarecrows on the Sunday in support of the Open Gardens which is a full weekend event. The White Lion will be joining the fun on the Saturday with a supporting programme. If you are making a scarecrow, you may find this website helpful: www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Scarecrow

Memorial to George Howitt

Many of us were saddened and dismayed to see the 2/3 foot trench being dug by BT in the grass bank along the wall between the telephone box and war memorial on the High Street. What would now happen to the lovely display of snowdrops? They were planted by his wife Heather and the Garden Club in his memory. Shame these quiet and important sites can be lost, if not recorded in village archives. If you have a good display and would be happy to divide some when they have finished flowering to do a re-plant, please let me know - Lynne 860793
