Formulation Additives for reactive systems
Dispersing Agents
Grinding and dispersing of pigments and fillers is one of the most difficult and
time / energy consuming part of the production of coatings and other reactive
systems. The use of dispersing agents during this process is indispensable and
ensures better wetting of the particles, reduces viscosity and prolongs stabilization.
It also helps improve color strength in coatings.
BASF’s broad technology portfolio including polymeric, oligomeric and surfactant
based dispersing agents enable our customers to find optimum solutions for their
reactive resin formulations.

Defoamers
Defoamers are essential components to control and prevent
foaming during formulation, application and transport of
reactive resins.
Foam is an extremely undesirable phenomenon that can
reduce the efficiency of the production process, impact
the surface appearance and promote weak points in the
dried film.
A defoamer point of action is the stabilized foam lamella.
Therefore, the product should be insoluble in the system and
able to enter the lamella and develop the defoaming action.
Depending on the formulation and customers’ requirements
different products can be selected to ensure the perfect
balance between performance and compatibility.
Efka® PB and Efka® SI range for reactive systems are based on
raw materials with low surface tension such as polysiloxanes,
polyacrylates and other organic polymers.

Rheology Modifiers
Rheology modifiers are key ingredients to control viscosity,
consistency and sag resistance in reactive systems. The
special additives enable the formulators to adjust rheology
and flow in their systems and improve the application char-
acteristics of the formulations.
To control rheology in reactive systems, we recommend
powder grades such as hydrogenated castor oil powders –
Efka® RM and hydrated magnesium aluminosilicate – Attagel®.
These additives offer high thixotropy and sag resistance.

Film-forming agents
Within the category of film-forming agents we present three plasticizers for reac-
tive systems focusing on low-VOC products. Plasticizers enhance the flexibility of
the final film after completion of the cross-linking reaction. But depending on the
application they are also used to enhance adhesion and tackiness or the rheologi-
cal behavior of a reactive system.

Wetting Agents and Surface ModifiersA smooth appearance in coatings systems depends on
good flow and leveling. Wetting agents and surface modifiers
enhance the component compatibility in the system and
provide the formulation with an adequate surface appearance.
BASF Performance and Formulation Additives offers a broad
portfolio of wetting agents and surface modifiers for reactive
systems based on various chemistries. Besides the Efka® tech-
nologies presented here we also recommend Loxanol® MI 6721,
which acts as an adhesion promoter and a cross-linking com-
ponent in epoxy or PU systems.
