Introduction

• Fourth industrial revolution, bringing together digital, physical and biological revolutions

• Fibre optic infrastructure providers are investing in deployment of optical fibres that will advance the business sector as well as social and economic growth of the country

• Fibre is connecting the world’s communication systems

Fibre to the home (FTTH)

• Fast internet access• a way of life not only a nice to have

• Moving to Internet TV vs Satellite TV

• Greater demand for connectivity• SA citizens and SA businesses

• Fibre is not a new technology for SA. It’s becoming more freely available for end users

• Fibre more competitive in the market and relatively well priced

• Fibre infrastructure is being rolled out in metropolitan areas, were the demand is for fast reliable internet connectivity

Fibre to the home (FTTH)

• Fibre to the home role out• One company: plan in 2014 was to have one million homes

by the end of 2018, March 2018 they achieved 933 000 homes• second company targeted a further 200 000 homes• third is aiming for 100 000, • further 40 000 made up by other smaller providers

• By 2020 there could be as many as 3-million homes • compared to 1,3-million homes that have adopted ADSL connectivity over a

twelve year period

• As these role outs continue, connected areas grow outwards, more and more segments will get connected

• Increase in usage of smart devices in the market require more connectivity

• people living in outer areas will continue to have connectivity via their phones and technologies such as 3G and LTE

5G SA

• 5G network trial in Soweto

• The pilot network was officially switched on mid Sept 2018

• Tested in restaurants on Vilakazi Street

• Communication infrastructure is a very important investment for the community

• Within the coming months, patrons at restaurants in VilakaziStreet, visitors to the Nelson Mandela memorial, as well as local residents - experience speeds of up to 1,8 Gbps per user

• Free to use for anyone in the area until end of the year

• Move from trial to full commercial deployment next yearReference: http://www.engineeringnews.co.za/article/comsol-samsung-bring-5g-communications-to-soweto-2018-09-26

Internet via satellite and off grid base stations

• Improvements in efficiency of base station equipment is lowering the power requirements• Off grid operation need not be confined to remote sites can operate

off-grid in urban and semi-urban areas making use of building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), PV roof tiles

• E.g. 5G using smaller micro, pico and femto base stations which have much lower consumption so can use solar/battery or other hybrid power supplies

• High Throughput Satellites (HTS), launched over Africa in 2017, big improvement towards broadband capacity for satellite services at prices that (hopefully) are competitive with terrestrial offerings

Global information technology report 2016

• 3rd pillar: Infrastructure • Percentage of total population covered by a mobile network signal |

2014 or most recent year available • This indicator measures the percentage of inhabitants who are within

range of a mobile cellular signal, irrespective of whether or not they are subscribers. This is calculated by dividing the number of inhabitants within range of a mobile cellular signal by the total population. Note that this is not the same as the mobile subscription density or penetration.
