Master sponsored by the Consiglio Nazionale degli Architetti Pianificatori Paesaggisti e Conservatori, releases 15 professional credits

The program of the Master courses by Quasar Design University started in 1988, among the first ones in Italy and eleven years before the university reform that with the Law 509 of 1999 established University Masters. Since then the formula didn’t change even if the programs are constantly upgraded in every new edition. Strengthened by an expe-rience of more than twenty years, today the Quasar starts courses which have a structure, duration, scientific level and professionalizing efficiency in compliance with what’s established by the MIUR. The distinctive character of Quasar Masters is the attention in keeping a particular balance between theoretic-disciplinary basics that define their contents and the tight cohesion with the practice of the professions to which they give rise.

EDUCATIONAL TARGETS

The target of the Master is to direct students – through a serious and complete professional

experience carried out on the entire cycle of conceiving and realization of recreational crafts– to

work with success in designing new models and in refitting, as free lance professionals or inside

workshops and productive facilities. Following its tradition, the Quasar Design University offers

educational programs that join efficient professional experiences with the opportunity to accom-

plish strong theoretical and methodical basis. In this way the graduate from the Master will be

able to express an outstanding operational versatility and autonomy, optimizing his own profes-

sional chances.

For this in the Yacht Design Master we deal with themes that, proceeding step by step towards

specialisms, frame step by step the complexity of the theme inside clear reference systems to

help the fast acquisition of familiarity with direct applications.

Students will acquire familiarity with various types of boats, they will learn the recent evolution of

boating: classification, nomenclature and standards; the characteristics of the boating trade, the

main productive facilities, materials and building techniques in use. Reaching to the project they

will be able to draw up the correct distribution of weights and the internal functional partition of

a boat; they will know how to efficiently use, in the project, the proper CAD tools; they will be able

to chose the most proper method to build surfaces suitable for the CAM transfer for the milling of

pieces, they will be able to define the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic features of the project and to

chose the most suitable water lines; they can look after the interior design, going through the

calculation of the boat’s structure, of the applicable powers and through the study of the most

efficient equip ( in the case of sailing boats); they complete the education of basis and experien-

ces of project management, the study of techniques and rules for the industrial reproduction, and

furthermore rules and ways of protection of the design idea, and of the patrimony of the environ-

ment and of the sea.

PROGRAM

PRESENTATION

Teachers are high profile Architects, Designers and Engineers who currently work and collaborate

with the most important national and international shipyards.

Lessons and workshops will bring from the starting concept to the completion of the project in

every detail reaching to the development of constructive drawings of a sail boat with a supporting

engine and of two motorboats that can be built in the shipyard. At the lessons of methodology and

of modelling 3D hulls and substructures, externals and interiors, will be put side by side to work-

shop techniques where they will right away start the ship design of the yacht. Teachers will guide

and follow the development of individual projects.

Production companies and shipyards, during the path, will help with their experience and will host

students in technical surveys and also for stages to complete the educational value of the course.

TOTAL CREDITS

1st MODULE

3D Modelling Training

Programs of assisted drawing used: when available at the beginning of the course, there will be

used the most updated releases of the most important software of the field.

The training for the use of three-dimensional software of modelling is set as a real intensive

course of NURBS modelling and rendering.

After a period of training specifically focused on the practice of software, students will put them

into practice for the development of the project.

The course is aimed to the use of nurbs surfaces, to the creation of 2° level curves and their star-

ting and tangency test. Every math will be created and tested following standards of ship design

aimed to the creation of solid milling models.

The models will be thought following the stamping techniques and tested with proper software

following draft angles, tangency and co-planarity, every deck will be converted in a stamp dealing

with the creation of joining elements and of stakes of joint-stamp.

2nd MODULE

Ship and technical design – yacht design

In this module, divided in “Engineering” and “Onboard assembly”, students will deal with all the

technical-regulatory and technical-functional matters that will be the basis for the following

work. The subjects that students will deal with are: design of hull lines, supporting structures and

register limits; regulation and ergonomic design in small spaces; onboard assembly and building

techniques and serial prototyping.

Furthermore, students will create, starting from the hull, “Argonaut projects” to prepare the

building of the hulls in numerically controlled jigs.

Students will deal with all the assembly with the creation of piping and main line, every implant

will be correlated with technical and specific assembly documentation and in the “electrical

specific” , cabling and techniques of marking and protection from external agents.

Students will deal with matters about the protection from galvanic powers and new rising techni-

ques, treatment of the air in small spaces and aeronautic ionization and ozonization systems.

3rd MODULE

Structural and aesthetic design

Design and styling and design research (yacht Series – yacht Custom – sail)

Structural and aesthetic design - Design and styling

Students will learn about building materials and techniques for externals and interior set up,

structural supports such as their connections with the hull, systems of removable panelling for

assembly, interior design and exterior design.

Furthermore students will deal with all the classification of the ship and its design typology.

Students will deal with different matters about the building of metal ships, especially for the ones

lightened with aluminium, race ships built in composite, carbon and aramid (Kevlar); the building

of interior complements in lightened materials and or directly integrated by stamp.

Furthermore students will deal with the so said “set-off” design, that provides for the realization

of all the furniture starting from a GRP (fiberglass) with the only addition of doors and refinishing

decorations such as fine woods, panelling cladding and surfaces. This technique provides for the

integration of all the onboard assembly that students dealt with in the Module 2.

Design Research (yacht Series – yacht Custom – sail)

At the end of the first four months, the student can decide if to get specialized in the three diffe-

rent types of ship building: serial ship design, custom or sail yacht.

Students will analyze all the types of recreational craft in the category that goes from 30 to 55’

(feet) differentiating serial products, semicustom boats and water lines until they reach to the

interiors.

Furthermore they will analyze all the series currently produced by the major Italian and foreigner

shipyards to better understand the current trade and future prospects of development of the

“yacht series” product.

In the last past of the Module 3 students will develop the exam project, freely chosen by the

student after that he deeply studied all the proposed types. They will be able to choose between

different project themes.

4th MODULE

Stage

At the end of the previous modules each student that regularly and profitably took part to at least

the 80% of the frontal lessons and workshops, will have the possibility to make a stage of 450

hours divided in 3 and half months inside companies, professional studios and shipyards that

work and produce in the field since years, to complete the educational path, through a direct

applying of the work done in the classroom in shipyards. The selection priorities of the final desti-

nations of the period of stage is decided considering the valuations that students received during

the frontal lessons and workshops.

SELF-STUDYING AND ON LINE TUTORING

During the Master, the student, coordinated by teachers, has to proceed with the design of his

boat starting from the concept until the elaboration of technical drawings, and furthermore he

has to create all the graphic documentation for the building of models, with the numeric control

and with the hybrid technique (Argonaut sections).

Each student can have a continuous on-line assistance and exchange documentations through

e-mail with teachers and assistants.

Each project will be constantly followed so that, once every part of it is completed, it can become

an executive implement.
