Grab your cape and fight the villains of boredom by signing up for the summer reading club. Just set and meet a goal to read each week and you’ll earn weekly prizes, plus bonus entries to win bigger prizes. Then there’s Super Hero Science, Mighty Dogs, art, music and magic workshops, heroic bugs, super foods, and super fun all summer long! Registration begins Wednesday, June 24 in Youth Services and continues throughout the summer. Jester Jim’s nonstop fast-paced juggling show is filled with beatboxing, balancing, and tons of laugh-out-loud antics. With over 500 appearances along the east coast, Jester Jim knows exactly how to get kids excited about reading! Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and meet us at the Gazebo. Free. For families of all ages. Lots of Colonie families love letterboxing, and we need volunteer letterbox keepers! As a keeper, your responsibilities will be to make sure everything is in its place, report problems to the Youth Services staff, and replace missing pieces provided by us. If you would like to care for a letterbox, please inquire at the Youth Services desk or call us at 810-0315. Save the date for our Finale! Kids who complete four weeks of the Every Hero Has a Story summer reading club will earn an invitation to this exciting event, held every year on the grounds of the historic Pruyn House on Old Niskayuna Road. You’ll enjoy games, music, crafts, food, and have a chanceto win super prizes! Special Events... Surprise Dad with a handmade gift! We’ll supply the materials for you to create something special. Just come in to Youth Services any time during regular library hours. All ages welcome. Younger children may need the help of an adult. No registration needed. Meet the Valley Cats baseball team! Enter your original designs in our 17th annual bookmark contest! A professional artist will select two winners for each month of the coming year. The winning bookmarks will be available at the library, featured in our newsletters, and displayed on our website. Entries will be judged within two age groups: 6-9 years and 10-14 years. Winners will be announced at our Finale on Tuesday, August 11. Entry forms available in Youth Services beginning Wednesday, June 24 and the deadline is Friday, July 31, 2015. Monday Programs...

Stop in on Monday mornings for hands-on crafts andsensory bin activities! Kids can transform themselves intosuper heroes by making masks, capes, and costumes, whilelittle ones will enjoy exploring our sensory bins. Visit theActivity Room in Youth Services anytime between 10:00-11:30 to join the fun! All ages welcome. No registrationneeded.

Interested in making video games, designing websites,or learning coding? Join two local high school computerwhizzes as they walk you through a four week workshop incomputer science. They will teach you how to use Scratchand develop skills you can use at home for fun. Plus, you willget to play super hero video games together! No priorexperience needed. Choose either the Monday or Fridaysession. For kids entering 3rd -6th grades. Registrationbegins online and in Youth Services on Wednesday, June 24.

Families are invited to get together for eveningstorytimes at Crossings Park. The first storytime onMonday, July 13 will include a free picture book for eachchild who attends! Join us every week at the Gazebo forstories, songs, and fingerplay fun. Too hot, too cold, or toorainy? No problem! We will move to the Meeting House nearthe Gazebo. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets to get cozy!All ages welcome. No registration needed. *This event issupported by funds from the New York State Library’sFamily Literacy Library Services grant program.

Tuesday Mornings...PRE-K POWER: While these programs are gearedtoward children ages 3-5, all ages are welcome to attend.

“Every Hero Has a Story”is our theme for the summer reading club. Who are yourfavorite heroes? Superman? Batman? Wonder Woman? Oris it someone else? After we share our stories, you areinvited to do a super-hero scavenger hunt, weatherpermitting. No registration needed.

Everyone loves singing and dancing! Lisa Russo involveschildren of all ages with joyful music and movement in thisengaging program. You’ll be up on your feet, singing along!No registration needed.

Lift Thor’s Hammer, walk across afire pit, make a superhero cape, put onWonder Woman’s bracelets, move throughan obstacle course, and “rescue a puppy”super-fast. These are just some of theactivities that we are planning for ourSuper Hero Boot Camp. No registrationneeded.

Use your superhero senses to taste, create, anddiscover new foods that fuel your inner superhero! Led byCapital District Childcare Coordinating Council, participantsreceive their very own cape, will try a new food, and plant aseed to grow at home. Come hear stories aboutCommunity Heroes. We have so many heroes around us thatdon’t wear capes. We will hear stories from firemen, policeofficers, teachers and others who perform heroic acts forothers. No registration needed.

Learn a magic trick to put up your sleeve! Magic ManChris LaBarge will reveal the secrets of some of his favoritemagic tricks so you can amaze your friends and family. Wednesdays...SUPER HERO SCIENCE:

Help keep those STEAM (science, techno) lessons freshthis summer and have fun doing it! Each week, we willhighlight a super power from one of our favoritesuperheroes or villains. We’ve added experiments and otherhands-on activities to create one POWERFUL program.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a …. ! It’s a fun explorationof concepts associated with flight. We will test Newton’sLaw with a balloon experiment, make and fly a rocket, andcheck out animals with super flight powers. For kids entering1st-4th grade. No registration needed.

You have to be fast to save the world! Are you “fasterthan a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive”?Maybe not… yet! Join us in a race through an obstaclecourse, try to change into Superman in a telephone booth,and work as a team to win a “big foot” race and more! Forkids entering 1st-4th grade. No registration needed.

Heroes and villans have had the power of lightning andtoday, maybe, some of that will “rub off” on you! We willhelp you to create some static electricity in various ways andthen have a weatherman join us to share more information onfascinating lightning. For kids entering 1st-4th grades. The Robotics Teams from both Shaker and Colonie HighSchools will do an interactive, live demo of the mind-blowingrobots they built! You’ll get a close-up look at these supertechno wonders and find out what makes them “come alive.”For kids entering 1st-4th grades. No registration needed.

“May the Force Be with You!” We will explore magnetismthis week. Join us to make a compass, race magnetic cars,paint with magnets, and bring home magnetic slime or sillyputty. Learn about the amazing things that magnets cando…and that we will do too! For kids entering 1st-4th grades.No registration needed.

Exclusively for kids entering grades 5th & 6th, the Super Bowl of Books is a 5-week program featuringsnacks, games, activities, and books. You and your team will get a book to read at home. Then on the lastnight, the teams will compete in a kid-created trivia contest based on the books. A $2.00 fee will becollected at registration to cover the cost of a team t-shirt. Whatever you can think of, come build itwith Legos! We’ll supply the Legos, you bring yourimagination! For kids entering grade K & up. No registrationneeded.

Do you love dogs? Our four-footed friends are sweetand gentle therapy dogs who will patiently listen to children

read aloud. It’s a great way for newreaders to practice their skills! Childrenentering first grade & older are invited toschedule a ten-minute slot to read between2:00-3:00 on Thursday afternoons. Youmay register to secure a spot, or justdrop-in. Registration begins Wednesday,June 24 in Youth Services.

Thursday FAMILY FUN NIGHTS...

Just what is Acro Yoga, you ask? A combination ofacrobatics, yoga, and dance! Gabby and Scotty Murawski willastound you with their acrobatic poses, plate spinning,juggling, and other fantastic feats. Audience participationencouraged! For families of all ages. Free tickets availablein Youth Services beginning Thursday, July 2.

Even the smallest super heroes will be leaping out oftheir seats! Singer and songwriter Tom Sieling will providea very lively, participatory musical performance. Enjoy aenergetic evening of guitar, banjo and harmonica hero tunes!For families of all ages. Free tickets available in YouthServices beginning Thursday, July 9.

Using musical games, structured traditional rhythms,and improvisation, participants of all ages and from all levelsof musical ability can play in a comfortable and welcomingsetting. Led by Jonathan Duda. For families of all ages. Freetickets available in Youth Services beginning Thursday, July16.

Everyone loves the Puppet People! See their newproduction, the Super Show, and discover what being a herotruly is. Meet Samantha who hates reading. Travel with herto the magical Land of Words where she must save all booksfrom the Evil Bookworm. In the process, she discovers howimportant reading is! For families of all ages. Andy Morse, the Music Man, is a popular children’smusician renowned for the special way he connects with hisaudiences. A talented guitarist, mandolin player andsongwriter, Andy delights and involves kids with his sing-a-longs, dancing, play-acting and storytelling. Fun for familiesof all ages! Free tickets available in Youth Servicesbeginning Thursday, July 30.

Fridays...

Here’s a chance to stay and play withyour little one! Romp & Read is a 45minute drop-in session for toddlers up to36 months. We’ll move to music, play withtoys, engage in group games, sharestories, and make new friends. Noregistration needed.
