Inaugural Foundation BoardPassionate to bring positive change to the mental health care system, business and community leaders from across Ontario Shores’ primary service area have contributed their time, talent and treasure as the inaugural Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health Board of Directors. Led by veteran television host and producer, Dan Carter, the Board contributes its expertise in investment banking, corporate leadership, non-profit leadership, policing and protection, psychiatry, emergency care, and community relationships from Toronto to Newcastle and from the shores of Lake Ontario to the Kawartha Lakes to the development of this new Foundation. Ontario Shores Foundation’s volunteer board members are committed to raising funds to support innovation in patient care programs, research, teaching, equipment and building renewal and growth, mental health promotion, and stigma reduction.

Awareness, education and first hand interaction with people with lived experience is key to overcoming the stigma related to mental illness.

In October 2009, an intimate audience listened openly as Canadian singer/songwriter Matthew Good recounted his powerful story about living with bipolar disorder and performed a short musical set at Ontario Shores’ annual Imagine Film Festival.

Thank you to the Imagine Film Festival sponsors Scotiabank Group, Avis Office Furniture and Blackstone Partners who supported this very important education and awareness event.

The 2010 - 2011 Imagine Film Festival and Let’s Talk Speaker Series will be made possible, in part, by gifts from Founding Donors. Hold October 16 - 21, 2010 in your calendar to attend the third Annual Imagine Film Festival.

Awareness and Stigma Reduction

Up Front and Personal

Excellence in patient care relies on the discovery and development of more effective treatment, excellent education, and an attitude that embraces innovation and improvement. Aiming for excellence is a core value at Ontario Shores, and Ontario Shores Foundation provided the resources to establish two prizes recognizing excellence in education. Physician-in-Chief Dr. Peter Prendergast retired in March 2010. In honour of his commitment to research and teaching, two prizes were named in his honour.

The Dr. Peter Prendergast Prize for Excellence in Education recognizes excellence of the hospital’s medical staff as demonstrated through their participation in the education of their peers, colleagues and other mental health professionals. The Dr. Peter Prendergast – Ontario Shores Prize in Quality Improvement recognizes psychiatry residents at the University of Toronto for excellence demonstrated through their studies of quality improvement in mental health care.

Recognizing and Rewarding Excellence

On June 4, 2009 Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health and Community Care Durham hosted their annual Drive Fore Care Charity Golf Tournament. The sold-out event was a huge success raising over $45,000 for both organizations.

Stigma continues to be a huge barrier for people living with mental illness. It undermines a person's sense of self, relationships, well-being and prospects for recovery. Communities are proving they can make a difference through education and awareness programs. Talking About Mental Illness (TAMI) helps to increase awareness about mental illness and the stigma that surrounds it.

Approximately one in five young people experience mental health issues but only 20% will seek help. The rest don’t seek help primarily to avoid the stigma of mental illness.

TAMI is a regional alliance of community agencies, school boards, youth, people with mental illness and other community members. These organizations work together to build awareness, understanding and compassion about mental illness and mental health issues.

TAMI organizes annual Stomp Out Stigma Summits, day-long gatherings of student ambassadors who are taught about mental illness through

presentations by professionals and mental illness survivors. These presentations focus on giving ambassadors the tools necessary to build strong “anti-stigma” teams within their schools.

Gifts from Founding Donors are supporting Summits and the development of tools to help youth become aware of and manage their mental illness.

We know families provide key social support for people affected by mental illness but they too need support, education and help. Ontario Shores established a Family Council in 2009 to create opportunities for involvement and encourage families to take an active role in advancing care and service delivery for a positive patient and family experience.

The Foundation is providing funds to the hospital to help create a Family Resource Centre – a welcoming space at the hospital for

families to access the information and learning materials needed for their loved one’s journey to recovery.

Family Resource CentreOntario Shores is gearing up for its second annual Mental Health Thought Leadership Forum. This forum brings together senior psychiatrists, clinicians and administrators from across the country and around the world to learn best practices, share ideas and gain new perspectives.

The Foundation is helping the hospital engage key thought leaders and welcome more participants to expand this important knowledge-sharing initiative and affect positive change within the mental health care system. A special thanks to Borden Ladner Gervais LLP for its financial support for the upcoming Forum.
