First Word
Hi everyone,
It's great to have you all back after our month long break. I hope you all en-
joyed your vacation, whether you stayed in Rio or went abroad, and are now
ready to join in the many events we have planned for you in August.
This month's edition of the Echo features an article from our members Marla and
Claudius. They are sharing a travelogue of their adventures in the Amazon,
showing some beautiful photos of the wildlife.
Those of you who have the privilege of traveling and discovering the many wonders of the world, and
have exciting stories to share, please send them to us so they can be shared with our members.
Raf Kiss, one of our newer members from Belgium, who has decided to make Brazil his permanent
home, has a wonderful website to share with all of you. He is working in conjunction with InC Rio, pro-
moting our events and providing some very useful information to the community. It is a great source so
you might like to add it to your list of favorites.
Robyn Thompson has some really good news and an update on the Speakeasy English program. You
won't want to miss her article. The progress has been extraordinary thanks to you, our members, who
have shown such an interest in helping the underprivileged.
If for some reason you missed our latest fundraiser, here is your chance to catch up. The turnout was
fantastic. We all relaxed as David Chew and his musicians played both classical and popular music. A
wonderful moment, and our sponsors outdid themselves with the food, drinks, special treats and raffle
prizes.
There are some special events that are coming up shortly that may be of particular interest to those of
you who would like to help the Arts and Social Transformation Group. Be sure to look for the exclusive
invitation in the Echo.
Our next fundraiser will be in October and is the "Taste of Rio." It will be a wonderful evening, overlook-
ing the beautiful Zona Sul from Alto Leblon. We will have an early ticket sale this month so remember to
contact us at one of our events and take advantage of our special early bird price.
Our Cafezinhos this month will be a chance for you to reconnect with all your friends, and the ZonaSul
Cafezinho has a special twist! You can read all about it in a separate article in this edition of the Echo.
We will also be meeting twice this month for some fun and friendly Happy Hours--one in Leblon on a
Thursday evening and the other on the beach at the end of a lazy Sunday to enjoy a relaxing sunset in
Barra.
At our Speaker Series event, also a Thursday evening, those of you who have been traveling and might
have missed a good part of the demonstrations that took place in Rio, can gain some insight into what
brought Brazilians to the boiling point. Our Vice President Michael Royster, aka The Curmudgeon, prom-
ises to keep the talk lively, so please join us.

FRIDAY:
Our last boat trip on the Cristalino River took us to TelesPires and out of the Amazon Forest to a little dusty town
with a teeny tiny airport where we await Chapter 2 of our trip – flying back to Cuiabá and driving up to Chapada
where everyone says it’s gorgeous and cooler. There are thousands of termite houses everywhere. As the forest is
an old one the undergrowth is not dense but is “bushwhackable”, which we often did, so we could see the many
shapes and sizes. A very cool cricket (cicada) species makes its home from sand it packs into a short tower. The
female plants her larvae that feed on nutrients and roots from the sandy soil for a 17-year cycle!! I'm curious as to
how sand could have enough to feed the larvae for 17 years. The cylindrical structure is about the diameter of a
silver dollar and grows up and up. To be continued...
TUESDAY:
Our 2nd full day in the Amazon and loving it; our lodge
and cabin are extremely comfortable even with limited
hours of electricity. We eat terrific fresh locally grown
food, and fish from the river. Our guide Fabiano is
highly intelligent and self-motivated. He has helped a
French movie on the Amazon and worked for the Na-
tional Geographic documentary on the Pantanal that
came out just last December. He led the film crew to
find jaguars, which have become very secretive.
C and Fabiano saw a huge poisonous spider, the Brazil-
ian Wandering spider, the body of which was the size of
C’s fist; it is listed as the one of the most venomous
spiders on the planet!
WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY:
Yesterday was an incredible day, so jam-packed with
jungle birds, other flora and fauna. We all realize that
snakes evolved to look like tree roots. But the corollary
is, roots look like snakes and each one needs scrutiny
before stepping on it. There was a cricket that came
from an Alice in Wonderland illustration; it was about 5
inches long, white, and had layers of royal-looking
robes.
Our afternoon trip was fantastic!! It was our first boat
trip through the Cristalino River to TelesPires. After
dark I got to see the Brazilian Wandering Spider. Its
eyes were caught in our flashlights. The southern hemi-
sphere night sky was in full glory; sooo many stars with
no interfering city lights.

A Belgian in Brazil
Former Financial Manager and Venture Capital
professional Raf Kiss visited the south of Brazil in
January 2008, on a quest to find a place to
start a new life. A big lover of everything that
has to do with nature and wildlife, he was initi-
ally contemplating moving to Ghana in Africa,
but the attraction of Brazil was stronger and in
January 2009 he made the permanent move
from Belgium to his new home country.
As an avid motorcycle and outdoors sports en-
thusiast, he decided to start up a motorcycle
travel company. Setting up the company, get-
ting a tourist guide licence and learning Portu-
guese took about two years, during which he
also did a lot of road trips in search of the most beautiful places in Brazil. In May 2011, he started a blog
called "Brazil Road Trips", in which he writes about many of the places he visited.
A nearly fatal motorcycle accident in December 2010 made him rethink the situation and he decided to
discontinue the motorcycle tours and become a tourist guide in Rio de Janeiro, a city he had come to know
quite well. His specialties are the hiking and trekking trails in the Tijuca forest, but he also does the more fa-
mous attractions like Christ the Redeemer and sugar loaf and even a favela visit is possible. In November
2011, he came in contact with AngloINFO, a worldwide network of information websites for English speaking
expatriates. AngloINFO was looking for someone to run their new site in Rio de Janeiro. It looked like a perfect
addition to being a guide and so in November 2012, AngloINFO Rio de Janeiro went live.
The site contains all the information an expat or candidate expat needs, to set up his new life in Rio de Janei-
ro, covering subjects such as moving, residency, real estate, finance, work, schools, transportation, family life
and much more. There is also a discussion forum, a “What’s On” guide, a classifieds section, and a business
directory with a range of English speaking businesses in Rio de Janeiro.
Any English speaking business, located in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area (DDD 21) is eligible for a free
listing in one of the categories of the Business directory, which is like an on-line yellow pages.
About the cooperation between AngloINFO and the InC, he says: “AngloINFO is all about information and
we seek collaborations with local expat groups and organisations, offering them to add all their events to our
“What’s on Guide” as featured events, free of charge. I got introduced to the InC at one of their fund raisers
and talking to the President, I immediately realised what a fantastic job they are doing here in Rio, bringing
people together during social and charity events, fundraisers, cultural events as well as educational and vo-
lunteering projects. It didn’t take long before I became a volunteer myself in one of the InC’s English tea-
ching projects”
Anyone involved in social or charity work can contact Raf in order to get more visibility for their organisation.
For candidate expats, he has the following advice: “Brazil is a country of inde-
scribable natural beauty, great culture, friendly and helpful people, but also of
bureaucracy and corruption, poverty (especially in the northern states), lack
of education and poor healthcare. Someone who wants to build a new life
here should come very well prepared, expect to work hard and have sufficient
financial reserves to overcome the first 3 to 5 years. Becoming a member of an
organisation like the InC is a smart move to get the integration process on the
right track.”

Charity Focus Update on the Speakeasy English program
The Speakeasy English program is now in its second year and we have 27 volunteers who are teaching the beginner level course at three different locations to ap-proximately 74 students! In April, we commenced classes in Rocinha on a Wednesday with a group of teenagers at Casa Jovem and then in early May two more classes began in ASVI - Cidade de Deus on Tuesdays and Wednes-days. This is also a teenage group with around 25 stu-dents in total. At Instituto Refazer in Botofogo, we have an adult class running for staff members on Wednesdays. The volunteers also help with other projects at the cen-tre. We were able to start two pre-school classes in Il Sorriso dei miei Bimbi, Rocinha in May and we have up to 33 children aged between 4 and 5 years loving these lessons and the volunteers! We have recently visited another NGO in Copacabana and are in the process of organizing volunteers to help with their English program. There are also other oppor-tunities to volunteer in the fields of art, music, dance and sport. I would like to say a huge thank you and congratula-tions to the volunteers who put so much effort into helping all of these Brazilians with learning English and expanding their horizons. Project: Projeto REI – Restituição Educacional Interativa - Cidade de Deus DONATION 2013: R$2,000 Digital Camera, computer mouse, web cams, head phones Founded in 2002, the Associação Semente da Vida da Cidade de Deus provides educational programs and social activities. The organization’s primary outreach is to the women of the community who have little in the way of formal educa-tion. Participants at the center learn to make clothes, jewelry and other products out of recycled, discarded and inexpensive materials. These items are then sold in craft markets around the city giving the women a method of income generation. In addition to this financial assistance, the center also teaches members of the community about drug prevention, sexual health (distributing condoms) and civic responsibility. The aim of the organization is to increase the self-esteem of the young people who come there and help them believe in themselves and their capabilities. The center also offers after school educational assistance to children ages 9-15. Classes are taught by a group of volunteer Brazilian teachers and cover the subjects of computer, dance, art, film making, personal health and citizenship. InC volunteers conduct English language classes twice a week. To say that the day I worked with my son
for the first time was the most emotional
moment of my life, may seem a little exag-
gerated. I can honestly say, this was a truly fulfilling, emotional eve-
ning of true pride and joy. One of the most joyous moments in my
life after the birth of my children: Mariana, Carolina, Davidzinho and
Daniel.
My son, Daniel, is a true artist. There have been many moments of
happiness and true elation when I accompanied him on his many vic-
torious Judo competitions. At one point in time, I thought that
he would become a future Judo Olympic champion, the question be-
ing for which nation would he fight for? Brazil? or England? His musi-
cal talents also amazed both my wife, Esther, and me and when he de-
cided to study gastronomy, we were warmly surprised.
On this June evening, Daniel was invited by the great Chef Zuza to
work as one of his assistants. Daniel left early that day to help prepare
the evening treats. When I arrived with the musicians I went directly to
the kitchen to surprise Daniel. He was so concentrated on what he was
doing. I noticed he was the only assistant chef that evening which ex-
plained his dedicated attitude. Each time a new sensation was served, I
could not believe the imagination and expertise that had gone into the
preparation of such a magical taste. Everyone that evening was com-
menting on the wonderful food. All the time I was thinking to myself,
with pride..."yes they are right, the food is spectacular" and I knew ex-
actly who was behind the scenes, my son Daniel. Daniel helped Zuza
create a menu in my homage. Every dish told a little about my
life. This dedication in itself was a beautiful gesture. One which I will
remember forever.

me, was seeing that look
of joy in my father's eyes
and knowing that my
father could see the joy
and pride in my eyes
looking right back at him.
I could see straight away
how proud Dad was of
me. And that look, I can
assure you, not only ma-
de my day, but my life.
From son to father
I sat down to perform with youth from the community. We started with Ave Maria the swan, then we
did the little country train by Villa Lobos and finished with Imagine by John Lennon. All works that the
audience warmly applauded. I will never forget how emotional both Zuza and my son were when I
looked over their way and it occurred to me that we were not the only artists that evening. The whole
audience paid their appreciation towards Daniel and his wonderful achievement cooking with Chef
Zuza.
What a hard day's night working together and what dedication from a truly gifted and talented son. I
am a most proud and happy father to have worked together with my son Daniel. Certainly one of the
most emotional evenings of my life.

Music and Gastronomy. Sound and Food. They both emerge from primitive (but also sublime) human instincts. Instead of a soundtrack, we offer a “culinary track”: a trib-ute to David Chew through six dishes. Each dish represents a moment, a movement.
I'm an Englishman in Rio - Citizen of the State of Rio de Janeiro: A tupiniquim version of English fish and chips, with fried
mandioca, filet of sole breaded in tapioca flour, a mild pepper sauce and cane molasses finish.
David Chew came to Brazil in 1981. Twenty-two years
later he was honored with the title of Citizen of the State of Rio de Janeiro, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, where Hei-
tor Villa Lobos, son of Noêmia, was also born. His mother
worked at Confeitaria Colombo, one of the most tradi-
tional coffee and tea houses of Rio, which was then the capital of Brazil. As a youth, Villa Lobos also performed at
Colombo‟s ornate salons.
Our dish represents the arrival of this English citizen and
the tribute paid him by the State of Rio de Janeiro. The
dish will be served on original napkins from Confeitaria
Colombo. The presence of “mandioca” (cassava or yucca), an ingredient introduced into the Brazilian identity by its
indigenous people, also reaffirms David Chew‟s admira-
tion for their culture.
Rio International Cello Encounter: Mango, papaya, strawberries, cucumbers, shrimps, cashew
nuts, olive oil, basil and Asian spices.
The Rio International Cello Encounter, conceived and organized by David Chew, is 19 years old in 2013. This event,
which grows every year and promotes the meeting of musicians from all over the world, already goes beyond Rio‟s
city limits. It has spread throughout the State of Rio de Janeiro, including to Búzios, where this Carioca lives and works. It is vital to promote culture beyond the capital cities. For Búzios, becoming a part of the Rio International
Cello Encounter makes a great difference and I hope that Búzios becomes a permanent part of this cultural event.
A dish that makes reference to the Rio International Cello Encounter could only be a salad. We have chosen a fruit
salad, with fruits from all over the world, seasoned with Asian flavors, olive oil aromatized with basil, the Brazilian
cashew nut, and shrimps from the water interconnecting the world.

Bachianas Brasileiras No. 2, “The Country Train”: “Pequi” chicken and mashed “baroa” potato
When David Chew was 15 years old, a Villa Lobos
score was placed on his music stand; thus began his
interest in all things Brazilian.
Villa Lobos himself wrote "gourmet pieces" such as
the “Feijoada Without Fear”, dedicated in New York
to Ambassador Dora Vasconcellos with the follow-
ing polylingual dedication: "My Dora, each grain of bean of thy feijoada is enriched by the Arabian
Noêmia and represents each musical note of this
orange-hued „Merci‟. Quevenga! Another feijoada so I may find other musical notes.”
Our dish is inspired by the Bachiana No. 2/IV. Toc-
cata (“O trenzinhocaipira” or the little country train). Baroa potato with chicken and pequi, ingredients
that are typical of the the interior of Brazil. The pe-
qui fruit, native to the “cerrado” in Goiás, has succu-
lent yellow flesh that conceals numerous tiny spines. One must bite the fruit very carefully to
avoid the thorns. It‟s a fruit that requires local
knowledge to be enjoyed, but has a unique sophisti-
cated identity - just like the TrenzinhoCaipira.
OBE - The Knight of Music: Star fruit stars and garlicky shitake mushrooms, prepared in sakê,
with oyster sauce, ginger and spring onions.
In 2009 the British Crown recognized David Chew‟s contribution to
music in Brazil. The doors of Buckingham Palace, where the OBE
honorific is bestowed in a ceremony, were opened to honor the “Knight of Music”, also the title of a documentary on David‟s life.
When cut crosswise, Star fruit slices resemble stars (hence its name) and is thus similar to a medal. Under the star fruit lies a bed
of shitake mushrooms and ginger. The dish is sweet, and sweet is
the taste of great achievements and their just celebration.

into educational projects in Brazil. I quote
David himself: "Children who sing in tune and who appreciate beautiful music, have
their souls at peace." David participates in
a vigorous music project in a community known as Grota do Surucucú in Niteroi. In
addition to teaching music, he is the di-
rector and conductor of the Grota String
Orchestra. He is also involved in another community project in Acari, in the Rio‟s
North Zone. Following this path of cul-
tural democratization, Rio Cello Encoun-
ter has become a more democratic event every year, expanding beyond the South
Zone of Rio and taking its messages and
contents to other areas of the city.
Nothing could be more democratic than
our popular Carioca “Caldinho de Feijão”.
Originally it was a pre-tasting of the fei-
joada, always served with a good ca-chaça, so as to assuage the hunger of the
guests. Instead of the typically Carioca
black beans, we have used white beans,
consumed in Europe before their arrival to the New World. The first mention of a
dish using black beans is from 1833, on
the menu of the elegant Hotel Théatre in
Recife under the name “Brazilian Fei-joada”.
Carioca Trio, a Miscellany Asparagus risotto with pumpkin and beef jerky.
The Carioca Trio is currently formed by David Chew (cello), Gilson
Peranzzetta (piano) and Mauro Senise (horns). The group plays eru-
dite and popular music in presentations in Brazil and abroad. An-
other inspiration for David was Radamés Gnattali, who in 1936 was part of a group called Trio Carioca, even though he was born in the
State of Rio Grande do Sul. After all, this is Rio, where everyone is
somehow mixed together, through blood, heart or soul: Lebanese, Amazonenses, Englishmen, Gauchos, Angolans, Mineiros, French,
Pernambucanos, Portuguese, Goianos, Spanish, Baianos, etc.…
Therefore my risotto Trio Carioca combines asparagus, a product that England produces with excellence, mixed with pumpkin and
dried meat, two ingredients greatly appreciated among Brazilians.
This is the way I found to honor David Chew and collaborate through my work with the initiatives of the International Club of Rio. David‟s example inspires us and fuels our hearts and minds.
About Zuza and his connection to music….
I have been singing, composing and playing the guitar since I was 13 years old, and I worked in the music business
until the age of 24. I worked as a musician in Rio de Janeiro but also did shows in France and Italy during a trip I
made to Europe. In the cities I visited I always tried to find places to present my musical work. I have learnt from
experience how much Brazilian music is admired abroad and how pleasurable it is to present one´s own culture to
the world. It is in thisvery same spirit that I build my story in the kitchen, aggregating my cultural experiences with
that of other culinary cultures of the world.
At the International Club of Rio, I recognize this same fusion of cultures for the benefit of actions in Brazil, which
makes the event extremely enjoyable and relevant. Very soon, no doubt, we will be together again creating and
making new projects, thus encouraging through the union of our forces those who are most in need.

Let me tell you about myself... I was born in Brazil
and have always had a commercial spirit. From a
very young age, I loved arts and crafts and I loved to
sell, so I combined the two and I started making
handmade bracelets and selling them to my friends.
When I started my career at age 16, I went into
sales. Within a few years, I was working for top bev-
erage providers in Brazil and continued on that path
until today. I finally made my way to Cachaça Leblon
where I remain today, in charge of marketing for Ca-
chaça Leblon for the state of Rio de Janeiro. I have
an inclusion strategy targeting the best hotels and
restaurants in the city and the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Cachaça Leblon is the sales leader in
the high-end premium quality, ca-
chaça segment in the United States
and in Europe. It has been breaking
paradigms here in Brazil. With a lot of
patience and commitment, I have been able to show
that Brazil can indeed make a very high quality cachaça
appreciated by those with the most refined tastes. Our
goal is to give Cachaça Leblon the real place it de-
serves, compared to the best drinks in the world. And
it is working! .... Although we export 80% of our pro-
duction, in Brazil, especially in the big cities, Cachaça
Leblon can be found at the most sophisticated hotels,
restaurants and delicatessens. Our partnership with
the International Club and other high-end segments
keep driving us to be better and better.
And last but not least: muddled watermelon
(with a couple of seeds to help digest), red
hot chili pepper jelly and Cachaça Leblon.
I cannot resist sharing with you some of my fa-
vorite caipirinhas. One I love is made the tradi-
tional way, but with golden fruits - passion fruits,
mangoes, pineapple, Cachaça Leblon of course
and splash of Schweppes Citrus.
I also love this unusual but delicious and
refreshing combination: cherry tomatoes,
fresh basil and Cachaça Leblon.
A toast to always be drinking at times of celebration (and in
moderation): Viva Brazil, Viva our heritage: Cachaça!!!
When did you start playing the piano?
I started when I was 12 years old with my father
How did you first get interested in piano? And who encouraged you?
We had a keyboard at home, which my father bought to my sister when she was like.. 4 years old. But she was
never interested in learning... When I was 10, I joined the music world, taking classes of violin, trumpet, guitar
and drums.. But when I met my sister's keyboard was true love haha. My parents and family always encouraged
me!
What are some of the best shows you have performed?
an amazing evening playing with the wonderful cellist David Chew; An improvisation with Randy Gloss (a renowned percus-
sionist) in Los Angeles; 4 concerts with the brazilian singer Joao Bosco; and or course, to play with Ralph Jones;

Joao Bosco. A famous brazilian singer of brazilian popular music David Chew is very famous as well
And What did participating in Cal Arts mean to you?
it was indescribable... I met friends for life and had experiences that I will never forget.
Thiago Vitório is one of Art & Social Transformation's most celebrated
alumni, a pianist, who was discovered at the ONG - Projeto Música nas
Escola de Barra Mansa. He was honored to be selected to play with David
Chew at the special fundraising event.
Paola Mendoza, daughter of InC member Liliana Mendoza, participated in
this year's Art & Social Transformation Rio-based program with Thiago.
Paola is a talented saxaphone player and was present on the night when
Thiago played with David Chew. Paola kindly agreed to interview Thiago
for The Echo.

Art & Social Transformation is a cause dedicated to discovering ta-
lent: music, dance, theater, visual arts, among teens from Rio's favelas and giving them an opportunity to change their
lives (www.artetransforma.org).
Through partnerships with world respected educational institutions, such as: Harvard, Spelman College, CalArts, Berklee
College of Music and Boston College, AST not only gives teens an unprecedented education, they have the opportunity
to find important mentor relationships and scholarships at these wonderful universities.
We are very privileged to have the presence on the night of some of the most respected professional musicians in the
world: Gerald Robbins, Haroutune Bedelian, Lorna Griffit, Russell Guyver, David Chew, all of the London Music Group
and various symphony orchestras worldwide.

CAFEZINHOS: Everything you always wanted to know about them!
Back in 1965 when InC Rio was founded, the CAFEZINHO was the event that brought local
expats together. Just like today, members volunteered to open their homes on a Tuesday morn-
ing, and women from all corners of Rio would spend a few hours chatting, exchanging information
and enjoying each other’s homes. They say you never forget a person once you have been in-
vited into their home, and I find that to be pretty accurate. Besides the friendship, it is also a great
opportunity to get to see different areas of Rio, and the many housing solutions expats have found
here. It gives both new and old members a perspective of the city that you may not have experi-
enced before.
This month’s calendar will again have two CAFEZINHOS. To make it convenient for all of you, we
have one in Barra and one in Zona Sul. We will be trying something new at the Zona Sul Cafez-
inho. We will encourage you to speak Portuguese and practice your newly learned language
skills. We also encourage you to bring along friends who might be interested in joining
InC but who might be shy about speaking English.
The Cafezinhos in the first half of the year focused on giving you valuable information. We added
a DOCTORS SERIES, and covered subjects like medical emergencies, Dengue fever and how to
cope with the tropical sun!
The LEGAL ADVICE SERIES covered income tax for foreigners, the new domestic law pertaining to
household staff, and driving in Rio.All this information has been documented and you will find it on
our Facebook Group under files. These articles will eventually form a Welcome Package for New-
comers on our Facebook page and Website.
We are looking for future Cafezinho hostesses. Cafezinhos have a duration of two hours, and if
your home can hold at least 20 people, then you are on your way, because you will be the one to
decide how many people you would feel comfortable hosting your home.
We always require RSVPs from members and guests. No address is published for security reasons,
so the hostess sends out emails with her address and directions (parking tips are always appreci-
ated). We want you to enjoy this event, so just offering your home and basic drinks (coffee, tea,
juice and water) is all that is needed. Melissa Mello e Souza, our Events Director and her team of
Jane Wood (Zona Sul) and Carolyn Stacey (Barra) will help organize dishes, glasses and snacks.
