Dear Band Director,Alfred is thrilled to announce our new concert band publications for the 2010–2011 season, including 61 imaginative and exciting compositions and arrangements by

the finest writers in our industry. These terrific new pieces are written for bands ranging from the very beginning level to the advanced.

An mp3 CD is included with full-length recordings of every piece in our Accent on Achievement, Debut, Challenger, Young Symphonic, and Concert Band Series. We also have a new addition to our catalogue, the Sound Innovations for Concert Band Series, which includes reproducible Educational Packs for each player in the ensemble. These teach all technical and expressive elements in the piece and allow all instruments to learn the melody, important thematic material, and challenging rhythms, along with scale studies, conducting lessons, and compositional techniques.

This year, we are thrilled to release our revolutionary new method, Sound Innovations for Concert Band. Our team of Peter Boonshaft, Dave Black, Bob Phillips, and myself, have spent years surveying teachers around the world to discover how teachers want to teach and how students want to learn. Combining our research with state and national standards, we bring you a method that is flexible enough to customize for your unique classroom. See more information on pages 6–7.

Your local music dealer can help you with your order, as all of our music is in stock and ready to deliver to you immediately.

Thank you for taking time to review this outstanding collection of new concert band music, and best wishes for a successful year of music!

Sincerely,

Robert SheldonAlfred Concert Band Editor

Sound InnovatIonS for ConCert Band (Grades ½–1½, Very Easy–Easy)The Sound Innovations for Concert Band Series provides stimulating arrangements for first- and second-year bands that reinforce newly learned notes, articulations, key signatures, rhythmic patterns, and musical terms and symbols. The selections in this series cover a wide variety of musical styles and periods. Each arrangement correlates with specific levels in Sound Innovations for Concert Band, our revolutionary new band method, but may also be used in conjunction with other instructional methods. Each arrangement includes an optional piano accompaniment part and a reproducible educational pack.

aCCent on aCHIeveMent (Grades ½–1½, Very Easy–Easy)Exciting original compositions and arrangements are correlated to specific pages in the Accent on Achievement band method. Extended arrangements of folk tunes and classical themes used in the method help to further enhance the student’s understanding of multicultural music and works of the masters.

deBut (Grades ½–1½, Very Easy–Easy)When your beginning performers are feeling more comfortable playing together as an ensemble and are ready to perform slightly more challenging music, Alfred’s Debut Series for young bands is the ideal choice. Suited for first- and second- year players, this series is in full-score format with reduced instrumentation.

CHaLLenGer (Grades 1½–2, Easy–Medium Easy)Designed to bridge the gap between grade 1 music and works requiring multi-part independence, these rich-sounding, solid selections are ideal for second- and third-year bands and feature a variety of styles and textures. Each piece is playable with only flute, 2 clarinets, 2 alto saxes, 2 trumpets, trombone, baritone, and percussion. The low brass parts are doubled by tenor sax and low reeds for stability.

YounG SYMPHonIC (Grades 2–2½, Medium Easy)Full sounding original compositions and transcriptions are provided in this bright and bold symphonic band series. Students are presented with more challenging performance concepts, both interpretively and technically, that help them to develop overall musicianship with limited instrumentation (2 trumpets, 2 clarinets, 2 trombones and a single French Horn part), providing a rich sound that delivers satisfying performances.

ConCert Band (Grades 3–5, Medium–Difficult)Designed for concert bands at the high school and collegiate levels, as well as community bands, this series includes original compositions and arrangements by a number of well-known composers. Each work is chosen for its musicality, uniqueness, and appropriateness for the serious concert program.

Once copied onto your computer, the files can be imported into mp3 players such as the iPod®.

Some older model CD players and car stereos may not be able to read the mp3 CD. In this case, you may save the files onto your computer and use a program such as iTunes® to burn audio CDs that your CD player will be able to read. This will require burning 3–6 new CDs.

If you are not able to burn new audio CDs on your own and wish to receive traditional excerpt CDs instead, contact us at [email protected] or (818) 892-2452.

ABOUT THE PIECE

Renaissance Fair is an original composition that brings to mind music from the Renaissance period which occurred during the 14th through the 17th centuries. During this time music was written for vocal as well as instrumental ensembles, and often was in the form of dance music. A Renaissance Fair is typically a weekend gathering held outdoors during the summer months featuring costumed entertainers, food and music of this time in history. This piece was designed to give young players an opportunity to perform music in the style of a Renaissance dance.

Find pictures and music from the Renaissance period to share with the class. How does this music make you feel and what does it bring to mind?

ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Robert Sheldon (b. Feb 3, 1954) is the Concert Band Editor for the Alfred Music Publishing Company. He has taught instrumental music in the Florida and Illinois public schools, and served on the faculty at Florida State University. An internationally recognized clinician, he has conducted ensembles throughout the United States and abroad. For more information visit his website at www.robertsheldonmusic.com.

FORM AND ANALYSIS OF RENAISSANCE FAIRBar Key Technical and Expressive Elements

Introduction Bb major The full band plays a dance rhythm that continues throughout the piece. The upper woodwinds and brass end after two measures allowing the rest of the band to be heard alone as they complete the introduction. The snare drum plays with the snares off to imitate the sound of a hand drum from this era.

5–13 Upper woodwinds begin the melody while the rest of the band plays the dance-rhythm accompaniment. The phrases are four measures long with the natural emphasis on the downbeat of the third measure of each phrase due to the change in chord structure and the contour of the melody. This phrasing should continue throughout the piece.

13–21 Trumpet and horn enter making the music somewhat more bold in style. Upper woodwinds and bells play a countermelody which provides additional color and harmonic interest.

21–29 Woodwinds play a secondary theme answered by the brass and low woodwinds in the next phrase.

29–37 Low brass and woodwinds play the melody with the percussion accompanying during the antecedent phrase answered by the full band during the consequent phrase.

37–41 The percussion plays a four-measure interlude featuring a variety of rhythms.

41–49 This section is a repeat of mm. 13–21 with a cadential extension added to set up the ending of the piece.

49–52 The piece ends by highlighting the dance motive as it adds instruments and color in each measure before concluding on beat 3 of the fi nal measure.

How does the form and way the themes are used contribute to the style and feeling behind the music?

STYLISTIC PLAYING IN RENAISSANCE FAIR

The rhythm of half note followed by two quarter notes should be played with emphasis on the half note and separation on the quarter notes to imitate the sound of the drum.

Can you fi nd examples of this rhythm in your part?

TERMINOLOGY FOUND IN RENAISSANCE FAIR

Moderato — Played at a moderate or medium tempo

A tempo is found at the beginning of your music over your fi rst measure. Can you fi nd this tempo indication?

CONDUCTING PATTERNS FOUND IN RENAISSANCE FAIR

Try your hand at conducting. With your arms down by your side, bend your elbows until your hands are pointing away from you. Turn your wrists so that the palms of the hands are facing each other in a relaxed “handshake” position. Start by bringing your hands up slightly (in tempo) before giving the downbeat:

pattern – Bring hands DOWN for beat 1. Move hands TOGETHER for beat 2 and APART (just past beat 1 position) for beat 3. Move hands UP and a little closer for beat 4. Rebound up slightly after each beat

Try conducting your friends while they play their parts. Can you conduct without counting out loud? See if you can conduct the style of the rhythm with emphasis on beat one and shorter notes on beats three and four.

Alfred Band in SmartMusic!SmartMusic® is interactive music software that transforms the way students practice. Instead of practicing alone, students practice with background accompaniment and hear how their part fits within the whole. And, they get instant feedback: Students see which notes they’ve played right or wrong and hear a recording of their performance. When practice is more productive and engaging, students perform better, their confidence can soar, and they develop a lifelong love of music.
