President’s Report The Australian Capital Territory Olympic Council (ACTOC) represents the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) in the ACT and is recognised as the ‘umbrella’ organisation in the Territory for the associations whose sports are among those on the Winter and Summer Olympic programs. ACTOC also promotes the interests and activities of Olympians resident in Canberra and provides administrative support to the Olympians Club of the ACT. It liaises with the ACT Government, its departments and agencies, including the ACT Academy of Sport, and supports the AOC’s education program by liaising with and providing material to schools and educational authorities as part of promoting the Olympic Movement, its ideals and ACTOC activities. It also assists the AOC in raising funds for Australian athletes preparing to participate in the Olympic Games. It therefore has a key role in the ACT’s sporting and community activities, and I am pleased to present the Council’s 2014 Annual Report and to outline the activities that took place during the year. As foreshadowed in this report last year, a major facet of the Council’s ongoing strategic plan incorporates the AOC’s requirements regarding fundraising. As a result, a significant amount of time was spent consulting with the AOC about putting such strategies in place as part of what became the 2016 Australian Olympic Team Appeal. By year’s end we had formulated such strategies and were awaiting developments initiated by the AOC within Canberra’s corporate community. This followed a meeting that Vice-President Andrew Dee and I had with the Chris Faulks, then CEO of the Canberra Business Chamber, in a bid to recruit prominent corporate identities. Assistant Secretary Owen Heness once again took responsibility for the administration of the annual Pierre de Coubertin awards, a key facet of the AOC’s education program. The awards engage students from Canberra’s secondary schools, whose nominees are required to have taken an active part in their schools’ sporting activities and to have also prepared a literary or artistic work demonstrating their appreciation of the Olympic Movement and its values. On Friday 20 June, three days before the internationally-recognised Olympic Day, a record number (for a non-Olympic Games year) of 31 ACT students were presented at The Canberra College, Weston Campus with their awards by three-time Winter Olympian Jenny Owens and the Director of the Australian Institute of Sport, Matt Favier. The event was reported by WIN Television and the Canberra Weekly. The Council again wishes to record its appreciation to Jenny Noordhuis from the ACT Department of Education for her help in running the event, and to Diane Heness, who once more provided superb catering. Olympians, some 130 of whom live in the ACT, are role models to sportspeople of all ages and abilities, most notably aspiring Olympians, and are a great resource, potentially, in terms of assisting the Council’s fundraising efforts and profile. In recent years, however, only a few Olympians have either assisted with or attended events organised by the Council. This resulted in a bid to generate greater interest and broader support from the ACT’s Olympians. Vice-president Andrew Dee established a reference group of Olympians to determine what was needed to promote such engagement, as a result of which rowing Olympian Marty Rabjohns took on the presidency of the Olympians Club of the ACT, and together with the aforementioned Jenny Owens and swimming silver medallist Regan Harrison arranged a reunion at the Ha Ha Bar in Belconnen. It was hugely successful. Among the attendees were BMX cyclist Caroline Buchanan, sculler Hannah Every-Hall and hockey gold medallist Louise Dobson, Olympic sculling silver medallist Kim Crow, sailor John Fox and swimmer Marty Roberts. This augurs well for the increased rejuvenation of the Olympians Club; particularly given the Rio Olympics are by now not far away. We also established a sound relationship during the year with the Brazilian Embassy. We meanwhile congratulate local Olympians finding success this year en route to Rio, notably basketballer Patty Mills, who at a civic reception hosted by new Chief Minister Andrew Barr received the Keys to the City. Sadly, however, Olympic archery gold medallist Simon Fairweather lost his wife, Jacqui. I attended the funeral on behalf of the Council and had considerable contact

with Simon. The Council continued to maintain an excellent relationship with the ACT Government. Andrew Barr handed his sport portfolio to fellow MLA Shane Rattenbury, with whom Marty Rabjohns and I had an ‘introductory’ meeting on 31 October. We also maintained a very good relationship with the ACT’s sports lobby group, ACTSport. Functions arranged by ACTSport that Council members attended were its Hall of Fame induction dinner and the ACT Sportstar Awards. Other events attended were a Business, Sport and Women’s Lunch at the University of Canberra at which Kim Crow one of the guest speakers, and the opening of the university’s Sporting Commons. ACTOC also maintained, as always, a productive and mutually helpful relationship with the executive and staff of the AOC, notably in the areas of Olympic history, finance, website operations and the AOC database. It also extended congratulations and good wishes to the AOC’s newly-appointed Secretary-General Fiona de Jong. Secretary Bruce Coe attended the AOC’s Annual General Meeting in Sydney, and was the Council’s constant ‘attendee’ of the regular AOC/SOCs teleconferences. We meanwhile assisted the AOC in the development of the Olympic Alumni program and helped arrange and promote an Olympic Team/Athletes and officials Ignite: Road to Rio presentation at the AIS on 8 December. I wish to thank all members of the executive for their support and assistance throughout the year, in particular Andrew Dee, who made the meeting room and facilities at Rowing Australia available for most of our meetings. Our Secretary, Bruce Coe, a noted sports historian, was appointed by ACTSport to its Hall of Fame selection committee. We also bade farewell to Sarah Maureil, who took up a sporting position in Melbourne, while almost at year’s end the Council was again in distress, with the news that member Lachlan Searle had lost his wife Rebecca. Bruce and I attended Rebecca’s funeral and did all we could for Lachlan.

Finally, in January 2015 we were saddened to learn of the passing of Harry Gordon, the AOC’s much loved and highly respected official historian. He was a great friend of ACTOC in many ways. Bruce Coe and I attended his memorial services on the Gold Coast and Melbourne. Harry will be sadly missed. Robin Poke

Treasurer’s Report The AOC provides $5,000 per year for the ACTOC to undertake activities in the ACT to support the Olympic Movement. In 2014 the Council spent $2,109 and hence underspent its allocation of $5,000. This has increased our retained earnings to $36,731. Funds were predominately spent on attending relevant sporting functions throughout the Territory, representing the AOC and promoting the Olympic Movement, and administrating the Pierre de Coubertin Awards. It is stressed that revenue raised though fundraising events does not go through the accounts of the ACTOC; instead they are processed directly through the AOC accounts.

Education

Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example, social responsibility and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles.

Olympic Charter Fundamental Principles of Olympism (No. 1)

The AOC’s a.s.p.i.r.e. school network aims to highlight the Olympic sport traditions and values as the context for teaching life values and life skills.

The Pierre de Coubertin Awards continued to be ACTOC’s contribution to the AOC’s Olympic education program. These awards were administered and promoted by ACTOC in conjunction with the ACT Department of Education and Training and Sport and Recreation ACT. In particular, Jenny Noordhuis of the ACT Department of Education & Training (PE & Sport) provided invaluable support in the functioning of the scheme through coordinating the distribution of the nomination forms to all government and independent high schools and colleges in the ACT, receiving all applications, arranging the venue and providing other administrative support. The awards were presented on the basis of students actively participating in school physical education and sport programs and the production of a piece of work, literary or artistic, depicting an appreciation of the Olympic Games. All high schools and colleges in the ACT were invited to nominate one student each, from years 10, 11 or 12. On 20 June 2014, a presentation morning was conducted in the Hedley Beare Centre for Teaching and Learning at the Weston campus of The Canberra College. Jenny Owens, three-time Winter Olympian and Executive Board Member of ACTOC and Matt Favier, Director, Australian Institute of Sport addressed the audience of students, teachers, parents and friends. Both then presented the 32 award recipients with their framed certificates, AOC pins and a copy of the book Olympic Gold: Our greatest individual Olympians since 1896.

Olympians

In a bid to reinvigorate the Olympians Club of the ACT (OCACT), the current leadership – rowing Olympian Marty Rabjohns, three-time Winter Olympian Jenny Owens and Sydney 2000 swimming silver medallist Regan Harrison – arranged a Christmas cocktail party in December. The event proved a great success, with a significant number of new faces appearing. Prominent among those present were BMX world champion Caroline Buchanan, rowers Kim Crow, Scott Brennan and Hannah Every-Hall, and hockey gold medallist Louise Dobson. It was also good to see Olympians of yesteryear attending, notably water polo representative John Fox and swimmer Marty Roberts. A major initiative launched at the function was the Olympians Club of the ACT Facebook page, which the Club hopes will engage more members and locate some of those for whom it doesn’t have contact details.

The Olympians Club has been working with the ACTOC on the regeneration process, and all signs are that the club is gaining momentum. This is particularly important in light of the AOC-administered Rio 2016 fundraising campaign. Both the ACTOC and the OCACT are keen to see local Olympians, a valuable and significant asset in promoting Olympism, become more involved. The campaign received a boost as a result of a meeting between the ACTOC leadership and the Canberra Business Chamber. The Chamber helped ACTOC identify a significant number of corporate and business leaders likely to be prepared to assist in raising the total identified by the AOC. We therefore go into 2015 with a real degree of optimism. During the year, Patty Mills received the Keys to the City from Chief Minister Andrew Barr for his playing role with the San Antonio Spurs winning the 2014 National Basketball Association championship. Caroline Buchanan won the Women’s BMX World Cup Series. Sculler, Kim Crow won the prestigious women’s Philadelphia Gold Cup and finished second in the single sculls at the world championships. After finishing an excellent seventh in the Women’s Aerials at Sochi 2014, Laura Peel annexed the world championship in the event in January 2015. Louise Dobson and Marty Rabjohns have been appointed by the AOC as ambassadors in the 2015/2016 Education Ambassador Program. They will be engaging young people with the Olympic Movement by acting as role models and mentors through the sharing of their Olympic experiences and conveying the positive impact that sport has had on their lives.
