Increase Athlete Performance with GoArmy Edge VR Army Game Studio 7/19/18 Simulation time works - we’ve proven it for years with soldiers and now athletes are getting the benefit. At GoArmy Edge we have spoken to many users that were able to measure substantial performance increases using simulation. One of our coaches reported that they no longer use practice time on the field for quarterbacks reading coverages - they do it all inside of virtual reality headsets. They have actually replaced field time with simulation time. That simulation can take place anytime, anywhere and frees up the field for more important drills. Other coaches have replaced formation recognition in practice with reps on GoArmy Edge. There is no reason to take twenty plus kids on the field and try to get them lined up correctly when instead you can go through eighty defensive formations or coverages in ten minutes using a drill in GoArmy Edge instead of seeing a dozen formations in the same time frame on the field. Simulating the mental side of the game makes practice more efficient, measurably improves player performance and adds wins. We’ve been doing it with soldiers and now we’ve proven it with athletes

Simulation time works - we’ve proven it for years with soldiers and now athletes are getting the benefit.

Google Cardboard VR is supported by GoArmy Edge. It uses a smartphone for the display, which is then dropped into a simple holder with optics. The resolution is determined by the smartphone you’re using. The better the phone’s screen resolution, the better the VR graphics will appear. For example, an iPhone 7 has a resolution of 1334 x 750 which is divided horizontally giving a resolution of 667 x 750 per eye with a 90 degree field of view.

About Virtual Reality Headsets

PC virtual reality employs high-end headsets with built-in screens and integrated audio. A powerful Windows gaming PC is needed to use them. Currently, the two big players in this space are Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Between the price of the VR headset and the PC needed to run the software (anywhere from $1000-$2000+ of total cost), often times price is the prohibitive factor in setting up this type of VR system with your team. Currently, GoArmy Edge does not support integrated VR headsets.

A sampling of Google Cardboard VR viewers

Google Cardboard VR is an inexpensive solution that can be easily deployed for an entire team. The additional cost beyond the smartphone is typically $10 to $30 per unit depending on the model. Use the link below to choose a Cardboard viewer that works with your phone. We recommend one

that encloses the phone, as the open types allow for distracting reflections. We also recommend avoiding headsets that use a magnet for control, as we’ve

found the headsets that use a lever to be more reliable.

Using Google Cardboard with GoArmy Edge

When using GoArmy Edge on a phone, VR can be accessed in any 3D mode. Select a player and double click to enter FIRST PERSON mode. Next, select ENABLE CARDBOARD in the left menu and place the phone in the Cardboard viewer.

We distribute branded GoArmy Edge cardboards at events. Ours has a lever (seen in the-cut out area on top); other units may use a magnet. GoArmy Edge works with either configuration. If your Cardboard is an official unit, it will have a QR code to scan to pair it with your phone. Check your phone settings to allow GoArmy Edge to access your camera. Then, with your phone in Cardboard mode but still out of the unit, select the SETTINGS GEAR at the top right and follow the steps.

Playback controls will appear when you look up and disappear when you look down.

You may view from anywhere on the field or any player. To switch views, place the WHITE DOT on the ground or another player and press the button. A player will be outlined in white when selected. To exit Cardboard mode, remove the phone and select the ARROW in the upper left.

Screen Mirroring

Screen mirroring makes it possible to send the output of the player’s headset to a big-screen TV or monitor. This allows the Coach to give direction to the player using the Cardboard unit. Screen mirroring can be accomplished using a variety of streaming devices.

Good Drills For Virtual Reality

APPLE TV - Use airplay to mirror an iPhone’s screen to the Apple TV.

CHROMECAST - With Google Chromecast you can mirror most Android phone’s screens to your Chromecast natively or with the addition of the Google Home App.

MIRACAST - Newer Rokus, Fire TVs, and many smart TVs can support screen mirroring via Miracast from most Android devices.
