A Message From Your Seminar

leader, deborah B. Ford

Dear Colleague:

In a time when there is a lack of funding for materials and a lack of funding for staff assistance and credentialed library media teachers, those of us who are already in the workplace have found that we must prove our worth in order to maintain our budgets and our existence. As library media teachers, we hold the key to information literacy and the secret to successful students. We know that libraries change lives. To prove that we are truly the “hub of the school,” we must be a place that draws students and teachers into the information age.

As school librarians, we are also teachers. We must learn smarter ways to collaborate with teachers. We must learn new ways to encourage children to read. We must create an environment that encourages our patrons to return with enthusiasm. We must learn to compete in a “bookstore‑chain” world. I believe we have the resources we need to secure our place in education.

At this seminar, we will focus on how to create a media center that makes the best use of the space we are given by learning new ways to organize our resources. Ideas for utilizing your budget to the fullest, creative solutions for ordering materials and solving staffing issues will be presented. Programming and marketing are also a vital part of the school library media center; we will gather new ideas and tweak old ones.

Whether you work at an elementary, middle, high school, or public library, this seminar will provide you with the motivation, strategies and resources to ensure that your school media center lives up to its potential without leaving you exhausted. I look forward to sharing numerous ideas with you at the seminar!

Sincerely,

Deborah B. Ford

P.S. This seminar will focus on practical, budget‑friendly ideas that can easily be implemented in your library media center.

To prove that we are truly the ‘hub of the school,’ we must be a place that draws students and teachers into the information age.”
