Storyline

On 2nd August 2010, we 8 students and 2 teachers went to Ahmedabad for the launch of Design for Change.

We learnt that DFC was a Global competition for children to design visible, sustainable change on any issue

that bothered us the most. It should effect maximum number of people.

We spoke about it to all students of Std VII to IX and we decided initially we will all identify amongst us what

bothered us most and work on it. We identified 4 issues:-

-Education for all

-Gender Bias

-Reduction in usage of Plastic

-Forestation

We brainstormed, explored, interviewed in 4 groups with issues we each felt about. After 10 days of work, we

realized most of the issues were being looked into by many others. At the end of it all, 5 of us were selected

for the competition.

We 5 are Anmol, Prakruti, Yash Vyas, Chirag and Manabi. We sat together to brainstorm to select our issue

and we all agreed what bothered us most was the improper disposal of garbage For all the exploration where

ever we went we came across a lot of garbage and foul stinks. We decided to work on Garbage disposal. We

had a brainstorming session and came up with different strategies to make people aware.

We named our project ‘CHAKKA CHAK KALOL’

Implementation of the DFC week we fixed from 23rd to 29th Sept 2010

Page 11: Ind eng-619-ppt

We went to Nagarpallika to understand the present system of Garbage disposal and for their cooperation. •We planned for rallies, street plays and arrange competitions amongst Societies. •We realized that we need to communicate with the people in the local language, catchy slogans, prepare a questionnaire for door to door survey to understand their needs, design a street play, got our teacher to compose a song we had written. •We got busy! We divided students from V to XI into 10 groups. 7 for door to door survey, 1 group to prepare banners and posters with our slogans, committment cards for people who take a pledge with us. The Drama group worked on Street play and 1 group to raise funds as well as find people to sponsor the project. From 23rd to 25th Sept all the above mentioned committees implemented their tasks.•On 24th when we had a brainstorming session with Mr Malhotra for sponsor, we realized we had chosen a rather large area. If we want to see immediate, easy monitoring and long lasting effect, we should focus on closer vicinity.•We got a good response from Bharatbhai Shah of faraskhana who gave us free access to his equipments, Mr Mahesh Shah of Pravin Potteries who gave us Rs2500/- as funds. •After much brainstorming, we decided to focus on 2 immediate streets around school and free of garbage. And instead of competition amongst Societies, we could have it amongst schools, as children all over can be empowered to bring about the change. At the end of which Mr Malhotra will reward the schools which keep their commitment for a span of 1 year.•We felt we should involve children from other schools and form an Association so that we cover larger areas in cleaning Kaalol and more hands to support this cause. •We interacted with C B Girls school, M G S school, Saraswati Vidyamandir to join in this effort. •From 25th to 29th Sept, we took out our rallies in the streets and schools we had finalized who had also taken part in DFC. We played the song, shouted slogans, performed street play at various locations, interacted with people and students of respective schools.

Page 12: Ind eng-619-ppt

After the interaction we asked them to take the pledge as below:-We the Citizen of Kalol, take a pledge that we will maintain 2 dustbins and not throw garbage on the streets.”•The combined efforts of street play which was improvised by the performing group with the inputs from surveys, slogans, song, we were glad to see people coming willingly to take an oath to keep the streets garbage free. •Before the rally all students and teachers of Amrit Vidyalaya took a pledge to ensure we keep our home surroundings clean and garbage free.•We were invited by the Pramukh of Nagarpallika to perform in the market to bring about awareness amongst people there. We also interacted with the people and made them all take a pledge including the Nagapallika Pramukh and staff.

THE CHALLENGES WE FACED DURING THE PROCESSStrategizing the entire implementation, Convincing the peopleGetting Authorities to support our endeavor

CHANGE•We felt happy that the impact of our rally had brought about some major visible change amongst people. •People started keeping 2 dustbins in their houses•Nagarpallika also distributed leaflets which talked of garbage disposal•We are taken seriously by people even the Nagarpallika Officials.•We realized, we ourselves had also changed in the process! We learnt to communicate better, we learnt to be patient, be innovative for interactions and most important of all we discovered the power in ourselves which increased our level of confidence. A beginning has been made to keep Kaalol CHAKA CHAK but we will continue with our efforts. Other schools have joined our mission and we will all strive to keep our area clean and be awarded for our performance end of the year!

SURVEY

1. During our door to door surveys we realized that though people were aware of harms of garbage they were not concerned about its proper disposal. People cleaned their houses 3 to 4 times a day.

2. Some people burnt plastics as fuel to heat water etc

3. The garbage was not collected by authorities regularly. At places people bribed the Sanitation worker to pick up garbage regularly

4. The sanitation worker absent themselves very often and even if they had not worked, would take signatures from people.

5. People were aware of their rights but were not willing to complain of their problems and no one person was willing to take the initiative.

6. Shopkeepers had no dustbins and no alternative to plastic bags as the paper bags of good quality costs more than plastic bag.

7. Public places like Bus stand, main bazaar, vegetable markets did not have Sarvajanik bins to collect garbage.

FOLLOW UP

We followed up with the Nagarpallika to discuss with them about the highlights and difficulties faced by people. What could they do to help in this cause?

• The workers do not do their duties regularly - Check and monitor the workers• How would they ensure people kept dustbins in homes? They would fine people if they littered the streets.• People feel anxious to complaint as individuals so how do they do it? - They could make anonymous call

or write to register their complaint to the President directly.• There were some bushes near the rain drains on highway, can the bushes be cleaned and the garbage

thrown around there removed? • There were Supervisors who could be contacted to inform if they have problems in disposal.• Pramukh promised us to give all help and said if all children lent their ‘child power’ work become easier

for them also. We left feeling very proud of our work.
