FEEL

What is the problem you were attempting to change?

The problem attempted to change:”Ignorance and neglect of our traditional values and heritage among people who are well aware of the sanctity but still by sheer negligence indulge in nefarious activity to vandalize the sites of heritage in around Karur”

To address this ignorance and neglect of our traditional values and heritage sites by our educated lot and to spread an awareness among common people and make a realization

among young children at the age group of 8 to 15 not to deface or destroy their originality.

The above feel or stance was taken by the children after collecting substantial evidence on the spot from a place of historic importance.

IMAGINE

Tell us some of the ideas generated.

1) Arousing interest and awareness to the team about heritage, and the team in turn

administer the oath and awareness to other children of our school. The oath was administered as ascribed by the CBSE site (provide the link).

2) Arranging and taking the children on a field trip and show the vandalism on sacred sites and sites of historic significance perpetuated by those who can read and write. Erase one or two scribbles that are found near the vicinity of the site.

3) Contacting resource people to talk against vandalism to disseminate the purpose.

4) Spread the awareness of heritage and the importance to other school children and show the menace of defacing historically renowned sites.

5) A temple (place of traditional value) was chosen and on an auspicious day (pradosham) a dance performance and pamphlets were distributed by the team members was given so as

the value of heritage is made to feel with interest and the importance being infused among the general public.

DO

What was your final solution and how did it change the situation and yourself? (Do include number of students participating and the number of people impacted.)

The children collected sufficient evidence from a historic site that show caused lack of

awareness and negligence among the people who know to read and write are the ones

who do the act of vandalism. Or the vandal came from people who know to read and

write are the obscener.

The find was show caused to other school children (numbering 500 children) who are nearby and the oath was administered by our team to those children and to disseminate the cause

substantiated by the find made by the students.

The children found a solution, that by addressing the negligence substantiated with evidence,

the cause could find an easy reach into the minds of young people and the general public and the oath could bring out a consensus and solidarity to arrive at a possible solution to the

problem addressed. There by the deed got a shape. In a way the team was able to garner support from the other children of the school for a cleanup action in the site.

There was also a wide spread impact on the general public by the dance performance by Swetha

charan and phamplet distribution in the temple (by around 1000 people). And the media coverage made by Dinamani(Trichy edition) a leading newspaper in Tamilnadu covering not

less than four districts.

Initiative:

A short trip to the local museum and archeological department aroused the feeling and

attachment in the students towards culture and heritage of their home town-Karur. This

sparked a precursor and was a reconnaissance for the project that was TO BE conceived.(Photos in

folder : reconnaissance)

Fact that was brought to light by the reconnaissance:

→ The scribbling and vandalism were done by those who knew to read and write. - This was adopted as the objective or problem theme of the project.

- AND THE PROJECT “LET’S DEFEND OUR HERITAGE” was conceived as the theme to be acted upon.

What and how the deed was executed:

The trip induced the children to make an effort to realize the fact that they can inspire

people and other young children to be heritage and culture conscious.

An oath from the CBSE website also was taken as the starter.

→ Taking the oath, reinforced the feelings to save heritage among the children, and a team was formed. The team members spoke about the importance of culture and heritage and the importance was also reinforced by resource people (invited by the

by the children) who gave valuable information and facts about Karur and its history.(Photos in folder: team formation_one)

→ The strategies were drawn based on the facts collected from the reconnaissance. → As strategized, the team decided to administer the oath to other children of the

school (PON VIDYA MANDIR) taken from CBSE website and the team members also spoke about the importance of heritage, culture and conservation of sites of historical monuments and places of worship. AROUND 200 children took the oath.

(Photos in Folder: Oathtaking_two) → Acting upon the above initiatives by the team and the mentor teacher, the team

rallied all children from 10 to 13 to volunteer a clean- up action in the nearby famous temple and historic site- Pugahzi mallai. (Photos in folders:

volunteering_three and the folder: clean up) → The endeavour of the team was brought to limelight by the popular newspaper,

Dinamani dated Friday, 8th October, 2010. THE DAILY FLASHED THIS NEWS IN

ITS THRICHY EDITION COVERING NOT LESS THAN 4 DISTRICTS OF

TAMILNADU (folder: media coverage) → The children were taken to the famous temple atop Pugahzi mallai - and to the

caves beside the temple, which have inscriptions and monuments based on Jainism. → The team, the mentor teacher along with a local guide (Mr.Raju- the drawing

master), guided all the other children in the site and explained its importance and

the history behind it. (photos in folder: media coverage) → The team, helped by other children, undertook a cleanup action at the site of

historical significance and documented it with a digital camera. (photos in folder: media coverage)

→ The team carried their evidence of the cleanup action that was captured in the site to another school nearby and showed a power-point presentation to nearly 500

children. The team also administered the oath to the other school children also. (photos in folder: dissemination)

→ While the team’s only girl performed a dance programme at the much reputed

Pasupatheeswara temple in Karur during the auspicious occasion of “pradosam”. This performance was viewed by hundreds of people, the rest of the team members

distributed pamphlets that emphasized the need and importance of heritage and its value that has to be cherished for generations.(photos in folder: dissemination

and photos in folder: phamplets) → This project was widely appreciated by the general public.
