DIRECTOR'S NOTES

Welcome!

We have a story we want to tell you? about a p lay.

My interest in this p lay was born out of the many inheritances it holds. The inheritances of theat re, Yiddish, Jews in America, immigrat ion policy and the women, specif ically the Queer women, who are erased from historical narrat ives. W hen dealing w ith so many inheritances in one community, how do we collect ively heal? We tell stories. We begin conversat ions. We at tempt to close the d istance of our d isagreements in mutual respect and understanding.

Bring ing a Jew ish story to a community where there aren?t many Jews, I spent a lot of t ime w ith the quest ions I believe this p lay asks: W hat does it mean to be Jew ish in America? How do we want Jews, Queer people and women represented in our histories and on our stages? How do we reckon w ithin our communit ies around d ifferences in opinion on how we want to be represented? If we embrace the intersect ions of our communit ies, does the way we approach p lays and narrat ives change? W hy do we censor art? W hy do we censor each other in art ist ic process?

There is a line in "Indecent " that lived on the wall of our rehearsal room: "The p lay belongs to the people who labor in it ." A ll of us carry aspects of these people?s stories in us. Some of us carry Judaism, some of us carry Queerness, some of us carry being a second or third generat ion American, all of us carry being an art ist . Since we each resonated w ith d if ferent aspects of the story, it has been so beaut iful to watch everyone approach the work w ith such curiosit y, respect and care for the p ieces that might be farther away from our ind ividual experiences. It was in the wealth of intersect ionalit y in the room, and on the ent ire team, that we found a deep sense of celebrat ion in this story.

"Indecent " centers the people, the joy and the pract ice of making theat re. The p lay is impact ful in it s centering of Queer women and Judaism in a story amplif ied by doing so steeped in celebrat ion. The p lay is a celebrat ion of the beauty and joy of Jew ish Culture, Queerness and Theat re. We are so excited to celebrate w ith you.

LAND ACKNOW LEDGMENT

It is important for many of us, as set t le-descended persons, to consider how the land we occupy cont inues to interrupt the cultural, linguist ic, historical and polit ical connect ions that ind igenous peoples have to this land. We must cont inue to recognize how we have, w it t ing ly and unw it t ing ly, remained as actors in the colonizat ion of what we regard as our orig inal context of teaching and learning. UNCSA is on the ancest ral land of the Tuleto, Sappony, Catawba and Keyauwee t ribes.

A land acknow ledgment g ives honor to and recognizes ind igenous territories and ind igenous people respect ive to the locat ion(s) we current ly work and live. A land acknow ledgment serves as a reminder that the land you current ly occupy has long been occupied by ind igenous peoples who have a d ist inct linguist ic, cultural and historical connect ion to the land.
