INDEX TO MUSIC NECROLOGY Compiled by BARBARA HENRY

This index appears annually in the June issue. It can be used to complete an author's dates on catalog cards and to note the date and place of death in the margins of dictionaries and encyclopedias. The "Supplement to 1976 Necrology" lists those deaths that occurred in 1976 but for which the notices appeared too late to be included in the June 1977 issue of Notes. The "Supplement" also includes corrections for any mistakes that were discovered later. In both the 1976 necrology supplement and the 1977 index, the publication year of the magazine or newspaper in which an obituary appeared is 1977 unless otherwise noted. Double vertical lines (D separate the magazines from the references to dictionaries and encyclopedias containing articles on the deceased. For dictionaries and encyclopedias with supplements, the supplement is indicated if a biography appears only there and not in the main body of the source. This applies to AME, Baker, Feather (jazz in the Sixties, Jazz in the Seventies), Grove, MGG (A-Rau), and Riemann.

With this issue of Notes, the responsibility for indexing obituaries has moved to the Music Division of the Library of Congress. We hope to continue this valuable reference service in the able manner in which it has been performed for so many years by our colleagues at the New York Public Library.
